Little things that annoy you....

I know it’s an age old whinge but ….red lights! It feels like VicRoads have sequenced the majority of them to be red so that traffic DOESN’T flow because if traffic did flow nicely we’d have bigger traffic jams and they (understandably) don’t want that.

I remember an initiative over 30 years ago on Canterbury Rd that if you followed the speed limit (60 klms) you’d get a run of green lights and your drive would flow better. It didn’t last long and certainly wouldn’t be introduced today.

Can confirm that's exactly what they do on a lot of roads. Senior traffic cop told me a few years ago. They think it forces people to drive slower in those areas. But all it does is make people speed up trying to get through them and/or get frustrated and drive badly as a result. Especially if there's stuff all traffic coming from the other direction. Creates more noise for any nearby residents as well. A really dumb and draconian outlook.

I remember the advisory speeds on Canterbury Rd, not a bad idea although I suspect there is too much traffic volume for it to work now.

What really gets me is the number of drivers who barely pay attention and you get a short green light (or arrow) and they take a good few seconds to take off and don't seem to realise that accelerating requires actually pushing the pedal, not just waving your foot in the general direction. So many light sequences where you could get half a dozen cars through each sequence and you end up with maybe 2 getting through.

While I'm having a rant . . .

Some people seem to have this idea that their car can only corner at a maximum of 5KMh. FFS, the number of cars I've almost run up the back of on a pushbike when they pretty much stop to turn a corner is ridiculous. Same with roundabouts. They pretty much come to a stop when there is no car within 100m of the roundabout - why are they incapable of looking as they approach the roundabout?

The standard of driving is woeful.

I never used to really pay much attention to the saying "grumpy old men", but I have become one. So much pisses me off now, I'd need my own thread - one of Richard Tambling length.
