I havn't seen any of the Coburg games. That said, from the Coburg reports, it did sound like Elton was improving all round in the second half of the season - but not consistantly.

How far off do posters (including you Stylo) think Elton is from demanding a spot in the ones? Or are you thinking that if he is played in the 1s, he will beome a AFL quality player (a theory that doesn't always work)?

Elton has improved in many non-flashy areas, Fred. Gut running, repeat leads, conditioning, four quarter efforts.

This will bring him closer to the tipping point where he can really impact VFL games. Far from a lost cause as some are suggesting.

Gets two years for mine, with quantifiable improvement in each.

i feel sorry for this kid already..

Hasn't played a game and already pressure building..

Wait till 2015 dud delist comments begin.

A lot of Griffiths about him at the same stage. Wait and see I suppose.

Griffiths has never really done anything at VFL level Lee, whereas Jesus started converting his 2-3 goals into bags in his first year.

Love to know what jacks first VFL season haul was.

Just a sensational prospect.

Nothing like Griffiths.

Beanie has cured leprosy, given sight back, walked across the Yarra and turned bread into Vegemite and cheese toasties

Even though this should be continued on the appropriate thread, I do completely agree with you Carter.
The couple of Coburg games I saw, there were sufficient displays of football talent that impressed me.
The way he moved for his size was pretty impressive.
Just hope the right stuff gets instilled into him and he could be looking forward to a pretty decent career.
I lick my lips when I think of McBean and Elton in the one side ... come on 2015 and 2016 (although I am looking forward to 2014 as well).
In fact if McBean and Elton live up to their potential Jack will have to be producing the goods if he is wanting an increase at his next contract negotiations.

Could either of beanie or elton kick 25+ in the 1's next year? Or both?

Doubt it.

McBean may have some chance in a Gunston like role.

Hope that's tongue in cheek LTRTR, otherwise one of the more staggering comments made on PRE.

To my knowledge Griff in 4 years has never kicked more than 2 goals at either Coburg firsts or Richmond, (may have snagged 3 once in Coburg 2s).

Beanie before he turned 19 had already bags of 6, 5, a couple of 4s and a few 3s.

I'd suggest that Beanie in one year has also kicked more goals for Richmond/Coburg than Griff has in 4.

So Beanie in one year is way in front of anything Ben has shown in 4.

Plus if you watch them play Beanie makes something happen out of nothing whereas Ben makes nothing happening his trademark.

Elton should not be considered in the same postcode when talking about Jack or his football ability.

Beanie is a different kettle of fish!

That's coming from someone who hasn't seen more than five minutes of McBean. There were a lot of eggs in the Griffiths basket, too.

The descriptions - super-tall & plays like a flanker - worry me, is all.

I am a regular Coburg watcher LTRTR so I've seen a hell of a lot of Mcbean.

I also was not overly enthused by the pick because I don't like Putt or Hughes or Griffiths types.

Skinny talls who play small are no good to anyone unless they are actually better at that role than the many smalls available. Also a tall that doesn't mix it with the big boys is a waste.

So when I first saw Liam play I was gobsmacked. First the skinny kid was competitive against the bigger bodies taking pack marks, but more often strong marks on the lead and his small game was unbelievable. I reckon he is already a better 'small' forward than Nahas (not hard) and Shane Edwards.

There is still a big 'if' when he is closely tagged by the big gorillas but his reach and smarts are a great advantage.

Needs to work on his tank and develop the upper body but he has the smarts, confidence and the desire which players like Ben lack.

Added to that he has the best skill set of any big man I've ever seen and the among the best agility and lateral movement of big men I've seen (with Nicnat the standout)

Leppa likes him too. From rfc.com

Justin Leppitsch knows a good forward when he sees one . . .

The triple Brisbane premiership player and three-time All-Australian representative, carved an illustrious league career as a centre half-back, consistently beating the best centre half-forwards in the competition over more than a decade.

So, when Leppitsch, now an assistant coach at Richmond, declares young Tiger tall forward Liam McBean a hot prospect, you clearly take notice.

McBean, who was Richmond’s second pick (No. 33 overall) in the 2012 AFL National Draft, kicked 37 goals from 14 games, in an impressive first-up season playing for the Club’s VFL affiliate Coburg.

“We were disappointed we didn’t get to see him (at AFL level),” Leppitsch told SEN.

“Just watching his VFL form, he’s very exciting.

“Probably his weight (93kg, to go with his 202cm height ), was the only thing that kept him out of the team.

“He’s a little bit light to go as a second ruckman, but he’s certainly a talented forward.

“I think next season, when he gets a little bit more weight on, he’ll be ready (for AFL action).

“For a guy that’s 200cm-plus, he can pick up a ball at ground level and snap goals.

“It’s bizarre. He plays like a small midfielder half the time.

“For a guy his height, it’s really rare, his talent, so it’s exciting stuff.

“It’s good for the Club’s future to have someone that you think could be there for a very long period of time.

“I’m looking forward to seeing him at AFL level . . .”

Just as a postscript, I feel Liam is actually going to become a whole lot better as he puts on size.

Watching him work an opponent in a marking contest is usually a joy to behold and although he wins a fair share, often his lack of strength results in him being slightly buffeted out of the contest.

As he gets stronger he should win more of those marking contests.

On his size, I've previously commented that front on he has a good frame, and looks a fair size. Side on and you see that his chest and arms are really those of a kid (whose grown too quick for his muscles to catch up)

Sounds good as long as he doesn't shirk his big man responsibilities like Watts.

I really think he is a different beast LTRTR.

I actually saw the first half of the game in which he got injured and left at half time because Coburg basically had no mids and the ball was camped at the other end.

What I noticed when it did come Liam's way was the hunger for the contest and a will to compete, he snapped a great goal in traffic and scrapped and flew for marks 3 and 4 deep. He kicked one goal 4 that day and the four behinds would have been mostly half chances created by his endeavour.

Ironically as I left at half time the Coburg ground was a soggy mess and I wondered why a thoroughbred like Liam was at Coburg and a cart horse like Luke was in the firsts.

Karma then bit Richmond on the arse in the second half.

I generally don't read the Tony Greenberg grabs.

But I do when it is about the Bean. Just can't help myself.

Thanks for the run down lamby.

Everything you say is right, Lamby. If people think Beanie is a cult hero before he's played a game for anything other than his game, they're wrong. Potential champion.

Have we decided on Beanie's nickname yet? I'm gonna take a "McBean: Birth of a Legend" sign into the cheer squad and yell "Legend!" every time the ball comes near him.

Legend. It might not be his nickname yet, but I bet it catches on.

That or McBargearse.
