I am surprised people rated this dud! And even more surprised they still speak of him.

didnt Beaner win the VFL goalkicking from 15 games or so?

A good player, just a step of AFL.

Think about the bile you spill, internet warriors.

Angus Graham held the VFL record for hitouts at one stage with over 60. VFL records don't mean that much.

they mean your a pretty good vfl player.

Too slow in the end.

Too slight to be KPF, not nippy enough to be a flanker.

Still think he's an amazing talent. Just a poor fit at the elite level.

I also contend that winning VFL goalkicking with the delivery he had was a fine effort.

Would have to say that only 5 games over four years is not much of a go IMO. Other clubs would have persevered more, been more patient and got more games into him. Just compare the number of games Dimma gave Morris as a SF. And then a couple of times, his usually reliable goal-kicking deserted him, maybe nerves. If he had have slotted a couple of those snags, would have made a difference for all concerned perhaps.

His body was just the wrong type to make an early impact as a big man. Could still become a successful mature-age player if he keeps playing possibly.

Good, measured post Leon. A rarity on this thread!

The fact we've been too patient with the likes of Elton has me thinking it was more than just physical traits that had McJesus crucified. A common theme of the VFL reports was McBean's lack of defensive and second efforts. Sounds like he just didn't follow instructions.

Or maybe he styled his game on Vickery's? Seriously though, most of the big guys know they just don't have the speed or agility to catch and tackle the running backs who bring the ball out, unless you're Lance Franklin fast.

Plenty of hypotheticals but all we have to go on is that he was cut while others have been giving longer time to show something.

Based on that fact is fair to say he was never AFL quality.

The quick cut off the list says it all.

Yep ultimately his body shape held him back. Some tricks for sure, just wouldn't have been able to make the transition to a key tall position at AFL level.
Like I said from ways back Carts, can't think of another 200+cm player like him who's ever succeeded in the style he plays.

In some cases, I think the player fails to make the grade. In other cases I think the club fails to support and bring out the best. In McBean's case, it could be a little bit both ways (ie if he wasn't following instructions).

I can't help but think that as per this:

We may have treated him like another 200cm player, when he wasn't. Sometimes trying to turn someone into something you want them to be, rather than turning them into what they should be can happen. Sad bit is although he's very talent, we'll never find out the answer.

I think we did find out.
It sounds smug with hindsight but I just about wrote Liam off when I saw him beaten by Lynden Dunn way back in his first NAB cup game.
For a tall player he was very good at ground level and he had a great snap. However the opposition was always going to match him up with a hard bodied third tall aerialist, good in the air who who could nullify his strengths when the ball hit the deck and who could run off him. It left him nowhere.
Dylan Grimes would have made life hell for Liam at training.
