Josh Caddy

There is no such thing as an offensive word..........only people making a choice to take offense!

You can call me anything you want. I will never be offended by a word.

No-one should ever have to apologise for someone elses CHOICE to be offended. Sticks and stones.....

it was a throwaway line, and only words
Sure, but there is more to it.
This is about respect. About not using someone's condition / life circumstances as an insult.

if you are not insulted, great. i wouldn't be insulted either.
Doesnt mean that it is acceptable.

Go back a few pages and read the posters who have children with similar difficulties. Maybe they are not insulted, but the kids are probably mad keen life-long tiger tragics. And one of their heroes has ridiculed the opposition and simultaneously criticised them.
I guess they can choose to be offended.
And alternatively we all can choose to be respectful and inclusive.

Good on Caddy for apologising, he owned up to it and took full responsibility.
It is terrific that our club is guiding the players in this direction. Compared with a win at all costs, cry salty when defeated approach. Or the tantrums in the tennis. Or the inadequate apologies in the past from the cricketers.

It’s not about you, it’s about all the people who are offended by it. They don’t make a choice to be offended, they are offended.

I read a tweet from a Richmond supporter yesterday who has an intellectually disabled brother . He hated it and welcomed the apology. The apology was for him, his brother and others like him. Not for you and I who aren’t in their shoes

Glad he apologised.

Also glad he didn’t apologise for calling him a dumb c***

Why are the umps miked up anyway?

Yes very dumb of the AFL. As much as we fans hate it, the broadcast is the money making product for the AFL, its totally in its control to ensure this sort of language doesn't damage the product. Turn the mikes off. They make the umpires sound like kindergarten teachers as well. If they must have mics, use them like the NFL and turn them on for score reviews otherwise leave them off. Have a look at the way the PGA controls its television product. The are analy about making their athletes and officials look like model citizens. Do you think 120 golfers play every week on the PGA without swearing. ROFLMAO.

What about all the dumb *smile* who are now offended?

My challenge to the attention seeking snowflakes is: rather than get offended on someone’s behalf.... and be a fake hero.... go and volunteer at disability respite and be a real hero. Make a real difference.

Meanwhile the tissues are at coles near the toilet paoer.

Alternatively you could meet with some people with a disability and tell them why they shouldn't be offended. Perhaps you could call them, or others, spastics while you are there.

As someone who has worked with people with disabilities for close to 20 years, who has friends with significant disabilities, who has friends with kids with significant disabilities and who has a child who is likely to be called a 'spastic ' at some point by bullies i think you should STFU.

Where’s that ‘Like’ button?

I get the outrage but whatever happened to the adage, "what happens on the ground stays on the ground"?

The problem is that the media is so hungry for "commentary" that the players banter on the ground has become the newest area to be exploited.

Isn't the onfield banter, abuse, antagonism meant to gain the upper hand by unsettling the mindset of the opponent? How are players meant to undermine their opponents mentally? I doubt that remarks like, "gee what a horrid kick, you must be quite unhappy that your last kick was somewhat inneffective" are going to unsettle your opponent.

Or perhaps, "gosh you really are a meanie aren't you, now I'll probably become all introspective and lose focus which isn't fair".

There obviously needs to be moderation in terms of acceptable levels of abuse but I reckon turn off the onfield microphones and let the players sort it out.

Whats next?

Without condoning in any way what Caddy said, this is further support for turning off the umpires mikes. An insulting comment made to an opposition player turns into potential mass insult due to the mikes. The umps can still have their mikes but the sound doesn't go live to air and the broadcaster can use the mikes, after being reviewed, for explanation of contentious umpire decisions, funny banter etc. This would have the added benefit of not having to hear Razor's look at me heavy breathing and grunts as he bounces the ball as well as anything else he says 90% of which is a waste of oxygen.

I totally 100% agree with everything you say in this post

Yeah what’s said on the field is supposed to stay there.
Personally felt that sledging was a cheap way to get an edge.
But can you see the media supporting getting rid of mikes.
They like to stir things up.

I'm actually surprised the offendatrons didn't run the whole "misogynistic language" line on this one and extrapolate it into a whole navel gaze at how such utterances lead to violence against women and can be attributed to such events as the Euridyce Dixon and Jill Maher murders. ::)

Who are these 'offendatrons'? I see people, both on here and in the media, saying it was a dumb thing to say and glad he apologised. I dont see any calls for a suspension or the like.

Muppet, numpty, bawbag, fuckstick would all be acceptable replacements. No need to offend anyone other than the bawbag in question.

Yeah i would have run with knobjockey but crossed it it off for homophobia. Some people enjoy such pursuits so the negative connotation with them is a no go.
Sledging is now a very learnered pursuit.

We need all players to carry around a book they can whip out of their shorts with a list of PC approved sledges that they consult prior to delivering the message
