JON gone at years End...

I concur JON was a nice chap who didn't lack courage. Watched him plenty at Coburg and he seemed to have the goods at that level but when the pace stepped up at AFL level he got caught out.

Lacked self-belief. When he played natural, instinctive football and found form he was eye-catching. When he began making mistakes he would collapse and make one mistake after another. He'd get himself into month-long downward spirals. He'd make a kicking error and get nervous, then he'd hold the ball too long so as not to kick and get caught, and that would make him reluctant to even call for the ball or get possesion.

4 positive things I remember about JON:

*The match tying point on debut

*Last quarter in the '07 VFL Grand Final was pretty good , kicked a 50 metre + goal on the run

*Last quarter v Port at AAMI in 08 - team under seige, Port coming home with a wet sail - he was actually one of the few who stood up against the tide and maintained his composure , also instrumental in Richo's early goal IIRC.

*A charge down of a long range attempt on goal v Melbourne same year(forget who the kicker was) Another game we're the oppsition looked liked coming back and he did some good things in the last.

The problem is in each of those last 3 games he was actually shocking in every other quarter - indeed his 4th quarter performance in the VFL granny was not only after Geelong had the game easily won (with no small thanks to him), but also followed probably the worst individual performance I've ever witnessed from a player at any level. He was damn lucky he was even allowed back on the ground let alone recieve a further 2 years at the club. I'm surprised Coburg didn't demand from RFC that he be delisted at 3/4 time.

I could also argue that he probably should've kicked the goal to win the dreamtime game, but I won't. :theyareontome

Schulz...lol...lazy footballer, no engine, 7 years he did jack (actually nothing that jack has done) and we'd take him back? 4 of his last 6 games this year he had 7 possessions or less. 8 goals and 7 tackles in those 6 games. The guy is very, very luck to have been unbelievably 9 years on an AFL list.

Without wanting to hijack this thread, Schulz is a one trick pony who has one or two good games a year and then falls back into the same old Sargeant Snooze routine that marked his years at Richmond. Good luck to Port because they're stuck with Schulz for another two years.

A terriffic junior footballer who couldn't convert at the highest level.

Shame he didn't make it.Not good enough.

The sledging about him isn't called for.

He wasnt terrfic as a junior.

Was nothing more then a project at best. Boy, it still staggers me to this day.

Highlights packages and top marks at the draft camp pretty much sums up the JON recruitment fiasco.

Are you sure? Can't say I'd heard of him before he made a name for himself late in the season he was drafted with East Perth, but there were plenty of people in WA who likened him to a young Peter Matera.

That's your opinion.

Do your homework Leysy. You should know this.....

JON averaged a whopping 7 possessions a game at that years carnival..

He had solid junior form, without beingoutstanding.

He smashed it in the 20m sprint & agility at camp which falsely lifted his stocks hugely ILRC.

Same - incredible abuse of Pick 8 - should be in the "how not to" section of the AFL talent assessment manual.

Regardless of what pick he went,he was alway's going to get a gig somewhere. His final year with the Royals in the wafl showed he had ability.Unfortunately he didn't go on with it.

He also really fired up at East Perth towards then end of that season. Clubs seem to be very attracted to young WAFL players who make the step up to seniors in the year they are first draft eligible.
