Re: Joel Bowden Press Conference today!

Agree with ya Nik, Bowden wouldn;t be making this announcement now if that sensible decision had been made - would have gone out on his own terms instead of pushed.

The fact that Bowden wasnt named captain says something dont you think?

Re: Joel Bowden farewell

Well done Joel :clap
Great career winning 2 All Australians and 2 Best and Fairest, and almost went out on top with something to give.

Frustrating at times as thought at the end he sometimes lacked the ability to attack and take the game on but still a smart footballer and hope you come back in some capacity to the club as a class person on and off the field.

My favourite Joel memories are
His 1997 season coming runner up to Cousins in Rising Star yet only played 13-14 games, missing games with broken collarbone in Monday night match against the Eagles when he also kicked 4 goals in a quarter (I think he did the same in a pre season cup match). Then I thought he would be a great goal kicking classy on baller for the club, but he never arrived at that level though thought he was unlucky to miss All Australian in 2001.

His 3 or 4 goals in 2001 v North in the last quarter when we kicked 8-9 goals to nil to beat them after being level at 3/4 time.

His 2006 kick out in the dreamtime, scores level Joel plays on and attacks hard and break the lines to give the JON who kicks a point to give us 1 pt win.

2008 match saving mark and backs up with 3 last quarter goals against Brisbane the followong week to win.

His legacy the rushed point rule which makes the game look better than what it did.

Someone enlighten me.

There was a funny piece of play Bowden did one night when he had the ball about 55-60 metres out from goal and then did an up & under kick into the inside 50 region where he marked it himself so he could kick closer to goal. It related to a new rule the AFL brought in about 10 years ago but then cancelled it. I vaguely remember the umpire not allowing him to kick from inside 50 after he did that.

cant remember that but i do remember JB deliberately juggling a mark to try get a better angle on a shot for goal.

Actually, I remember that.

There was a similar incident, I think in the same year where he took a mark on a tight angle. He actually tried to improve his angle by tapping the ball to a more central position and juggling the mark on purpose so he could complete the mark five metres or so from where he should have had his kick. If I remember correctly, the ump ruled that he had played on and allowed an opponent to tackle him.

He was too smart for his own good.

That's right he juggled the mark to inside 50 and I think it was because of a new rule that was brought in when you mark inside 50. Although I could be wrong, maybe he just wanted to get closer to goal.

That's where our frustration built on him.

If only.................

My if only...... for Bowden would have been, if only he was 194cm and 95 kg. For that matter if he had his brothers height he would have become a genuine gun CHB.

He played the position well but was always undersized. For two years he was matching it with the best.

If he was key position size he would have been there his whole career.

For mine he was a key position player in a midfielders body.

Am proud to have number 11 on my current jumper - even though I've had it for at least five years!

A class act all-round.

im sorry to see joel go..im surprised he is going..i think he had something to offer as some sort of guidence and level headness down the back..helping the moore,s mcguans etc down back find their way.

a great clubman

a great career

a great footballer

one of the few highlights of the last few decades

good luck joel

Same here and I'd like to know who's making these decisions.

Champion player. Respectd Comp wide. Liked his comment in press conference about how he has to be a good dad and husband. A true man in my opinion. Good on ya Joel Bowden. Good Luck!! :clap :clap

Have just received this weeks Jungle Beat.

Interesting choice of words:

The club is also set to farewell a favourite son from the playing field, with Joel Bowden playing his last game in club colours on Saturday against Collingwood.

I wonder ???

I seem to remember Cambo juggling a mark to put himself outside the 50 for a 9 pointer in a preseason game. Or was it Joel??

As for my two bob...

Champion bloke, gave us many thrilling moments, (caused a few).

Lest we forget the Bowdens v. Adelaide
Lest we forget the rushed behinds
Lest we forget the game being won at the other end in the following game.

Joel Bowden retiring in this way: It's an outrage.

I had the pleasure of meeting Joel some years ago at a Sportsmen's night (I think he was the only REAL sportsman there. :hihi ) and what a lovely bloke he was.

I feel sorry for him finishing this way. If he had been at a stronger club I'm sure they'd be happy for him to continue on and play a role but the irony is whilst he has been one of our best for 10 years while we've been poor, it's probably right that he moves on now even though he's got some miles left in him.

Thanks Joel, you're a credit to the club and a credit to your family. You've given us plenty to remember you by and plenty to sustain us as we try to stagger out of the desert we've been in for 25 years. Good luck with your future career and have fun throwing some snowballs with your kids. (Tip - don't touch the yellow snow.)

A credit to his family.

Treated poorly like so many before him too. Surprised ( bite my tongue ) that Richo hasnt been treated shably !

Lets see what the new coach brings and what 2010 brings with the Tigers and Richo.
