Jay Schulz [Merged]

We lost a good opportunity to develop this guys potential at Richmond which has not had the best record in developing and keeping young talent
If he was at a well managed club like Hawthorn or Geelong he would have been helped to focus on the mental stresses of football.
He would have been read the riot act in his first coulple of seasons and would have realized how much he stood to loose by not applying himself.

Interesting comment from the Schulz interview at:

........
Schulz knows coming to grips with the demands of AFL football took him a lot longer than many of his contemporaries. Now it feels as though a frustrating puzzle has been finally put together.

“I’d be the first to say I probably went along for the ride a little bit more when I was at Richmond. I didn’t grow up till I was 23 or 24, and started realising that I actually wanted to do it and could do it, and that if I didn’t change something it was going to be gone and my career was going to be wasted.

“I wish I could go back to then and give myself a bit of a shake-up, but at the same time if I’d done that I may not have turned out to be the person I am today. I’m proud of who I am now and proud of the footy I’m playing at the moment, but I also want to keep getting better.”
.......

I wonder how many other current RFC listed players would also fit into that situation?

The Richo Ride.

Just like Dayle Garlett and Carl Peterson?

Its been a little bit of a surprise to me how well Jay has gone at Port but I think a lot of it is down to how much he has grown up as person since or because he made the change.

I don't enjoy him kicking 50 goals for Port but I do like the fact he is pretty comfortable in his own space now.

True, he was never going to perform for us.

Or did he simply go to a club that developed their players better Bill?

Jay always had the talent. Reckon we were a very poor club when he was with us though. Coaching, culture, leadership wanting.

He's become the player I for one envisaged he would. Shame not with us.

Wallace ruined him. Port fixed him.
Must have been overjoyed when he heard Wallace was going to Richmond after he'd been on radio saying if he was at the club he'd get rid of him and Ben Marsh immediately.

Schulz was his own worst enemy. Took a change of club for him to realise what's required to make it at AFL level. Does help as well as a forward playing in a better side too.

We gonna have an awesome forward line. Cloke Dawes Schulz. We can't be stopped.

I bothered to click on the Dawes article hoping not to see our name as one of the 'opposition' clubs interested in him.....but then again, I wouldn't be surprised.

was never good with us, but seemed well suited to Port. Honestly, sometimes I forget he even played for Richmond.

Congrats on a good career Schulzy...

I get this feeling we are going to see him back at PRO for a year or two....

Not that I think its the best idea since I think he is done, but would prefer him over Cloke.

Beautiful kick of the football, accurate, can crash a pack or two.

Don't really want to see him back in black and yellow.

But if he came and finished here, maybe he'd play like he owed us something...... Which he does
