James Reyne Appreciation Society

Pretty big fan of James and the "Crawl" over the years. I remember going to the "Manhattan" all the time in the early nineties to see the cover band "On The Crawl". I think James even played there himself on a couple of occasions. Managed to get a photo with him once at an acoustic set at the Ringwood RSL (no idea where that pic is now). Very underated band. Was extremely disappointed that they didn't get any recognition on that ABC documentary (the history of Aus music) called "A Long Way To The Top".
Best 3 "Crawl" songs: Hard to name only 3.
1: Hoochie Gucci Fiorucci Mamma
2: Daughters Of The Northern Coast
3: Oh No Not You Again

Best 3 James Reyne songs:
1: Motors Too Fast
2: Slave
3: Water Water

He sang a great medley of Crawl songs and his songs at the Countdown Spectacular in 2006.

Agree. Australian Crawl whilst not a "deep and meaningful" band, are underrated never the less, particularly when you consider some of the *smile* Australian bands that seem to get put up on a pedestal.

"Not a very 'appy....a-waaaay to start the.. daaay."

"People aren't used to hearing 'Dorseted', and it's not actually a word - it's from the Dorset Gardens - I'm trying to be as suburban as possible, and it rhymed with 'corseted'." - James Reyne, 2003 (from Wiki)

Saw them at the Dorset c.1984 - packed house, good vibe, but can't remember any songs they played that night...

LTRTR I actually thought it was in reference to an English Dorset Garden (a style of garden)

I may be wrong.

Nope. definitely the Dorset gardens hotel.

All his best songs are on the legendary "Poor Elocution" LP regularily referred to in the 80's

Great show at the Peninsular Lounge on Sunday. Played 75% Aussie Crawl stuff plus plenty of old solo stuff.

Quality.

Always been an Aus Crawl fan. Actually hitched a ride with them in the 80's. funny story there. ;D

Last Christmas holidays we were touring country Vic in the van with about 6 cd's on rotation in the stacker.
Oldest boy was singing Reckless. Cracked me up as it sounded so right.

" sh1t or die , that kind of behavior". :rofl

Reminded me of the coodabeens who had a segment called " mountaintops". (melting pot) where people get lyrics wrong. Some crackers on there. ;D

Mondegreens I think they are called.

The definitive mondegreen site is KissThisGuy.com (which is off the air at the moment). It was named after a line in Purple Haze, in which Hendrix sings "'Scuse me while I kiss the sky", misheard by some as "'Scuse me while I kiss this guy". Ironically, Hendrix did actually sing "kiss this guy" during live performances.

Great songs, many others could have got a mention Errol, Glamourpuss, Little Criminals, Motors Too Fast etc.

I only found out a couple of weeks ago that Guy McDonough was in fact the lead vocalist on Errol, not James. I'd always assumed it was Mr Reyne.

p.s. Draga, you're kidding calling The Angels overrated. :thumbdown

And on 'Oh No, Not You Again'. They sounded remarkably similar.

Yeah....I never realised. Aussie Crawl were a bit before my time. However, I grew up loving James Reyne and only started listening to the AC stuff later.

Forgot to mention that one of the original band members (Simon Binks) has been leaving some comments on Youtube every now and then. Just scroll through the comments at the bottom of the page....(pages 3 & 5 at the moment).

JR had two busted hands on their appearance on countdown. Hard to maintain your cool with that but he pulls it off. Still pretty funny.
