Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

I will be as diplomatic as possible.

It was a MAJOR surprise he went at 30.

MAJOR.

Pick 30:Jake Batchelor
Height: 188cm
Weight: 79kg
DOB: 13/02/92
Club: Dandenong Stingrays (Vic)

Left-footed medium defender who is strong overhead and a neat disposer of the ball. Provides good run and can lock down on opponents. Won Dandenong Best & Fairest. Super reader of the game

His highlights look good. Nice left foot and seems very balanced.

But I can't say I'm not disappointed that, with all the mids we picked, we didn't pick a tall KPP with pick 30. Both McCarthy and Mitchell were highly rated, both were available, and both went to *smile*ing scum Carlton.

Given the state of our KPP stocks, particularly in defence, why the hell wouldn't we have picked either of these two?

KPP,s at Richmond Gourdis Grimes Thursfield McGuane Rance Post Riewoldt Griffiths Vickery Astbury Moore Westoff i have included Vickery because the word is he will play more forward than ruck that's 12 key position or potential key position players.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Is he the bloke that's going to release Lids back to the midfield?

Could be.

To me, Deledio is training like a midfielder at the moment.

Maybe the Batch will get a run early. Batchelor, Newman and Connors.

I also like Best and Fairest winners. Shows consistency at a high level.

Welcome Jake, hope your career outlasts Horlin-Smith, Parker, Hallahan & Mitchell
Exactly!, you could add McCarthey to that list as well

Gourdis - Untried (and 193cm...?)
Grimes - Untried (is he big enough for Kep Posi? 193cm 83kg)
thrusfield - NOT KEY POSI
maguane - NOT KEY POSI, but is playing stop gap CHB
moore - NOT KEY POSI
Rance - doesnt look to be Key Posi on what hes shown so far but he is 194 and athletic. give the benefit

that leaves
Post, Riew, Griffo, Vickery and Astbury. (Westhoff?? still raw rookie. cant consider)

i make that 5 proper key position with 3 goo grimes and rance given the benefit also. not 12 like you say.
means we dont have nearly enough proper key positions and should ahve defincately drafted a decent one at pick 30.

on topic, good luck cleo.... :-\

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Kicks the ball like Duncan Kellaway! A little disappointing considering Lycett and Harper went just before and Mitchell and Parker were still on the table.

I am a little bewildered by this pick, still can't work out why we wouldn't have drafted Parker who has been a star for 2 years

The ones after Jake I can live with considering they were around the 50 mark, even though they appear left field also.

Looks like a draft of missed opportunities as we may have had our preferences snapped up just before our go.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

I'm real angry we didn't take Parker. Bloody hell. He can play midfield and HF. I don't like Batchelors unco kicking style. Under more pressure it might come undone. That's a big concern for me.

Agree. I've been watching Parker for 2 years and was counting down to our pick 30 getting happier and happier that Parker was still available. Was gutted when we didn't call his name out :(

Batchelor does look a bit unco. Appears to be a left footer as I never saw him use his right in the highlights package.

I've seen Dandenong play around 5 or 6 times in two years and, every time I saw them, Parker got me excited. It says something that I don't ever recall seeing Batchelor play (possibly because I was so focused on Parker) in those games.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Cant wait to see the degree to which he can play. Whether he'll play on instinct, the footy Arts, or smarts, footy Science. Could also be the ultimate swing man. His pad should be pretty cool, party central for the young fellas. Has his drafting been confirmed?

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

he won the dandenong b&f this year and they finished on top... he was injured for the state carnival.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

This has probably been posted, apologies if that's the case. From Inside Football.

"Jake won our B&F playing predominantly off half back. A good size , he has great hands and is a super reader of the game. A terrific one on one player who set up a lot of our rebounds and was our number 1 rebounding player and marking the ball off opposition kicks. He is one of those classic rebounding half backs that AFL clubs get really excited about. A really balanced player coming off a tremendously consistant year and he deserves a crack at AFL level. I think he will get it!"

Gourdis & Grimes are "tried" more than any draft pick we'd take this year, they've both played AFL
Thursfield & McGuane are both tall enough to play KPP
Rance is the same

The only one who really is a bit undersized is Moore, but he's played KPP also. It's not all about height.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Not picking up Viv 'mauritian magician' Michie will come back to haunt us.

:hihi :hihi I must admit the Miller angle did cross my mind. Am really staggered we didn't get McCarthy or Mitchell with this pick.

Bloody flankers!!! Is Wallace back coaching? Surprised we didn't recontract McMuffin :p

maybe after the first few KPPs in the draft ie day, lynch and cook we rated the rest pretty much on par with one another, hence we can still pick up one in the rookie draft of a similar calibre without using an early pick.
