Jake Batchelor

Had a look at the start of this thread to the end of 2013 out of interest.

Talk about hype and hyperbole when drafted. It was so funny im sure a lot around here wont be too happy about this thread being bumped.
It then sort of had people not prepared to back down too much but a few were starting to hedge their bets, then it was oh he can play he just has to get back to season one form. Then we had full circle swings of hes no good etc. People did not think for a moment that season one was the Abberation.

Funny as was the comments about him being better than Enright and numerous others. Or he was a better pick than Heppell and Parker.

What i found amazing was so many just refused to look at his strengths and weakness for the body type and role he played.

We kept Jake for seven seasons for just 84 games. An awful lot gifted. Statistically speaking he was underwhelming right throughout.

Pace, agility, height, size, and poor below his knees with his share of fumbles all right there for everyone to see at draft time, yet all we got was the hype and how good a pick he was.
He was generally tipped to go later in the draft THEY WERE RIGHT he should have.

Extremely harsh in my books.
From memory, basically suffered a career ending hip injury where he lost pace and mobility and that was him done. Met him a few times, ripping bloke, very smart and was always a coach in waiting, loved his golf and used to get lessons and all his golf gear off one of my best mates…

I ignored it because it's one of those revisionist history pieces where someone tries to mount some superiority, while denigrating someone who gave their all for the club.

To me personally it adds nothing new to discussion and basically just trolls the forum. Not sure what it's aiming to achieve.

I'd say if you searched on every user's posting history, some embarrassing dirt could be dredged up.....the joy of online forums and things never being removed etc etc.

I tell ya what there is a few comments there denigrating posters for not liking the pick. But thats all right they can what they liked because it was not them asking questions or criticising. criticising
There is nothing denigrating or even mentioned about his commitment or how much he gave to the club.
What it does say he was massively overrated as a player by many when first drafted and as it turned they were wrong.

Revisionist not at all. Its simply a comment on what happened and what actually turned out at a footy level.

We should all look back and try to learn.

We dont judge footy ability or how good they were on the field by the being nice blokes criteria.

What we can do though, is judge them by what those internal to our club think of them, rather than what could have been in a draft.
We have no idea on what the list strategy was at the time, what the club was trying to achieve by taking him, etc.
There's been more than a few blokes over the years who've sacrificed their natural game to fill a role (eg Trent Cotchin) or played through lots of injury to help the club.
The internal ranking of the player is far more important than the external.

Most of us aren't privvy to what the club thinks so can only go by what happens in front of them.

As our second pick and a decent one at 30 he ended up a bust. He showed some good signs especially year 1 but struggled there after and was mostly ordinary.
Them are the facts and they are backed up by most metrics. Talk about revisionism he was hailed and then when he didn't reach the expected heights most who backed him in let it queitly slide away and thats after having cheapies at those who thought it a poor pick.

Parker and Heppell were the most two talked about non picks that we never had. The Batchelor pick was just another in a long line of poor picks outside the top 20 that fj had.
For gods sake 2010 was an awful year for us draft wise. The only consolation was Houli in the psd after sooky Essendon refused to trade.
Grigg also out of contract who we fair shafted carlton for in a player swap for Collins.
