Ivan Soldo

Just heard Ham the Dill say Dimma yelled to Soldo to get into the ruck contest.

This bloke seriously has NFI about the basics of the game. He's worse than Hampo in marking!!
He is a horrible footballer. It’s harsh but he just does not provide us with anything positive. Once the ball hits the deck he is useless.

We arent the club to try out experiment footballers.
He was atrocious.
Playing a smurf in the ruck would’ve been more beneficial

There are some really negative sentiments against Ivan in the last few posts but in looking at the Champion data statistics, I would like to note the following regarding Ivan;

- he had 28 hitouts. Goldstein had 28 hitouts.
- he had 7 tackles. The most number of tackles by any Richmond player. When was the last time that our ruckman had the most tackles in a game?. There were 8 RFC players who only had the paltry 1 tackle, including Cotchin.
- he had 2 marks. Goldstein had 1 mark.
- he had 4 possessions. Goldstein had 11 possessions.
- RFC won the centre clearances 15 to 12 and lost the overall clearances 41 to 42.

Watching the game live, it seemed that Goldstein was dominating the ruck and that NM were dominating the clearances. So the hit out stats were certainly a big surprise. Where Goldstein had the big win over Soldo was in the hit outs to advantage - 43% to advantage for Goldstein versus only 11% to advantage to Soldo.

Goldstein has been one of the best ruckmen in the competition for the last 10 years, so while Soldo was clearly beaten in the most important stat of hit outs to advantage, overall he wasn't disgraced.

Obviously Soldo has a long way to go to become a top ruckman but overall I suggest that he is showing some encouraging/positive signs. I think that he is improving and hopefully RFC allow him to string at least several games in succession.

We all know what Soldo can do. He can win tap outs. It's what he can't do that is bad, very bad. He is basically non existent around the ground. Watch how many of his tackles stuck, how many prevented the opponent from moving it on. Very few. Then there was the typical play in our backline where he just needed to smash through the opponent like Nanks would have done but was outsmarted and they had a shot on goal. He's a complete liability and a detriment to our game plan of immense pressure. That's the beauty of Nanks, he's an extra midfielder that we lose with Soldo there. Soldo is a ruckman of a bygone era.

Goldstein is a shadow of his former self. Nearly 31yo, nowhere near the player he was 3 or 4 years ago.

Carefull GD using facts to prove your point to certain posters will put you in their bad books.

I thought that Soldo held his own in the ruck contests against a highly experienced quality ruckman.

The two incidences which I was disappointed in was his punching the ball instead of marking it.

Goldstein didn't have a great influence in the match and much of this was due to Soldo so maybe some of the hate on this thread is way over the top.

Counting down the games until Nankervis is fit and ready to play again ... but it's going to be a while.
In the meantime, Soldo will most likely have the number one ruckman's position for the forthcoming weeks.
Let's hope he can step up from last night's performance against Norf.
He needs to build some confidence so he can start having a presence and an impact around the ground.
Some versatility in his game would be good.
With all of this, Balta will get more of the rucking duties than would have been anticipated. That can only be a good thing for his development.

I agree. We knew what we were getting when we were forced to play him. He is very limited. In saying that - I think he will go alright against the cats. If you wanna place blame on last night I’d be looking at most of his teammates who did sweet FA all night. The fact he laid more tackles than any other player is a damning stat for this group.

Hope takes some confidence from the couple marks he took down back in the second half. He spoiled instead of marking in the 1st half.

4 disposals, 3 frees against, there's some facts to ponder. Sure he limited the 31yo Goldstein somewhat but that's not what we need in the future. The issue many were concerned about remains, Soldo is poor around the ground. No improvement at all,if anything gone backwards on games in previous years. Admittedly it's a small sample. Unfortunately he's our only mature option atm.

Have the hit-outs to advantage stats. Goldstein 12 from 28 hit-outs, that's a very high percentage, Soldo 3 from 28. 9 more advantages to go with the 7 more disposals. Other ruckmen Tigers had 4 hit-outs to advantage from 11 hit-outs and North 3 from 12. Soldo was soundly beaten whichever way you look at it.

He was ok against the Hawks, but last night again showed why he has so few games against his name despite the length of time spent at the club.

Interesting. Seemed in the third quarter that we must have lost a dozen clearances in a row.

:hihi No more effective than a hospital handpass.

If we want him to help us win games, he should focus on becoming he best intercept marking ruckman in the game.

Oh sorry, ruckperson.

Please don’t ban me for that slipup.

I think we were or 4 or 5 in front at half time. They smacked us in the third as we know.

Comparing to Goldstein is meaningless and not to the point. He might have won or did 50/50 against him, but overall for our team, he was hopeless. He just doesn't have the nous for football basics. We even heard Dimma yelling from the boundary to tell him to get to a position.

Same goes for Cox, but at least uses his strengths better, which is what Soldo needs to wake up to.

All is not lost, we still need him for future games where he can get his chance to show.

I’ve been a big supporter but last night watched him up close and personal. And it wasn’t pretty.
Refused to put his hands up in the air to signal he wanted to provide a marking option. Saw him numerous times with hands on his knees as if to say “please don’t kick it near me, I’m trying to hide”
As a tall player you have got to want the ball. Seperate the wheat from the chaff.
He had the lowest impact from any tall on the ground. His tackles mainly came from ruck contests where he was forced to be around the ball. Disappointing and should be dropped. CCJ wants the ball. Big difference

Hits nail on head.

It’s all good it have height but if you ain’t prepared to use it then stay home.

There was a time in our back 50 where he was literally on his own to take an uncontested mark but opted to punch the ball instead. That’s enough for me to say thanks but no thanks.

Soldo is not the future. He never will be.

I would rather lose games with CCJ but at the same time fast track his development.
