Ivan Maric

I'll wait for Smith to perform in the season proper before deeming him a success. Has been proven soft time and time again at GC.

Re Ivvy. He's cooked. But Hawthorn have won 3 flags with McEvoy, Hale and Ceglar. So basically our mids needs to get smarter, when reading other rucks taps. And given the talent in there they should be able to. Adding better ball users such Menadue, C. Ellis and Yarran should also help.

If he goes down we are in for a work of hurt.

Never fear will have Hampson.
He might play if he dosent sprain an ankle, do his knee, break a finger, twist his foot, dislocate his elbow,or fracture his cheek,,
His ready

Big Ben can fill in as a Ruckman. I'd be tempted to have him stet the season as ruck to force the issue. Either he can or can't, let's find out.

I agree with other posters that we should have pursued Zac.

Was going to be a star when first picked up and his showing with the Cats at 206 cm , nice leap and mark is going to possibly fulfill his ability !

I love the warrior Maric but he no longer has much of a leap and against taller ruckmen and ones with a leap he will struggle. With queries over Sean, Griffiths and knocks to Vickery as well(concussions) it's an area of weakness. Soldo is still maybe another 12 mths and young Choi if he grows into his body is possibly 2 years away.

It looks like contested and tackling is an area we have worked at over summer and with the additions of Townsend, Moore and possibly KMac rotating through our midfield options(not all in the one team at the one time) to help Cotch it will make work of our midfield to gain first use of the football.

Could be Maric last year. The wear and tear has been showing on and off the last 18 months on Marics body.

Heart and soul of the Tigers and loved by the Tiger Army but we all must realise it's an area we must address in the end of season draft.

You've said it well; fully agree.
Even if brave Eevan was a fit, agile 24 yr old, just look at what he is up against. Without bothering to check all exactly, here's just some of the opposition:

Sandi - 211cm, Cox 211 cm + Wittes 209 cm + Grundy 203 cm, Gawn 208 cm, Smith 206 cm, Jacobs 202 cm.

He's got little hope of matching against these guys who often tower over him, as well as being considerably younger, faster and they don't get any smaller in the second half when an older guy is likely to be more fatigue-affected.

The club has just been in denial about the team's needs in these days of the ruck giants! Competing will no longer cut it.

Guess we'll just have to send young Cholly out to tap dance on their heads. Get him to leap n land on them instead of landing on his arse n the second half of the season will belong to the big Croation mullet.

Nothing like a bit of over-the-top, pre-season bravado. But if we start losing games due to being killed at the clearances, it won't last long.
Cholly is far too much a lightweight to seriously compete with these guys; have a look at some of the contests against Hawks big men in NAB2. Brushed aside like a mossy generally so his leap was nowhere near the ball.
He has a long way to go. As I suggested in another post, I can only see him being played on the wing, or deep forward maybe, this year if at all. Needs time and bulk.
Big Eevan showed signs of struggling 2015; it would be remarkable if he was able to turn it around another year on. Why didn't we make a bid for Zac Smith?

Maric is still a very good contested mark around the ground. Don't write him off just yet. True, he does and will struggle at centre bounces.

Really? Used to be. Not any more. Less than 1 contested mark a game last year.

Our ability to keep control of play when we go long down the line is a massive issue for us, and our ruckman is the biggest cause of this.

Maybe Ivan can ask Beanie for help on his contested marking?

Seriously though we would have to be one of the worst down the line marking side going around.

Its only when jack goes up the wings that we look likely.

Part of the problem is that if we push him to the offensive square he can't touch it. Simple clearance to the bad guys. So we have to post him up in the Hale zone 30 degrees at 40m. And if they spoil him there it's a simple transition for the bad guys.

The terrible truth.

My boy Max Gawn will have a monster year. We will struggle to beat Melbourne if and when he flogs Ivan.

We flog a lot of dead horses amongst our pointlessnessess (Nihilists, Donny). I've always thought of Eeeeevaaaahn as Boxer in Animal Farm. Total buy-in to the revolution, body-on-the-line leadership-by-example workhorse, and the thanks for his efforts a visit to the glue factory when he could no longer pull a plough.

Griff can mark down the line.

We don't have a good ruckman anymore. But double-team rucking has worked, notably against Sydney in the comeback win last year when Griff and Ty both got up the ground to make 2-on-1 contests against whatever spud Sydney had (Tommy D?).

Why couldn't we play a ruck combo of Griff, Ty and Beanie, or Griff, Ty and Chol, or Ty, Beanie and Eeeeevaaaahn Jr. At least until Hampson's ready for his five-game stint.

Eeeeevaaaahn ain't dead, but he can't pull a plough like he used to. Do we really want to flog him to death?

Yes.

Aha. We do want to flog him to death. We don't want him fit for the finals. (We don't want him in the finals).

Let him pull the plough through one more winter's paddock, to rest with the daisies in the spring.
