Goodbye Mabior Chol

It’s fairly simple with Chol.
Too many times he’s simply ball watching.
Not disinterested but non competitive all the same.
He doesn’t have natural ability reading the flight of the ball and how to impact in a contested situation unless he’s leading straight at it.
He may never be a Naughton, but he needs to attack the ball in the air even if it’s just bringing it to ground.
He’s good following the ball as a 2nd ruck, is good below his knees and obviously has a football brain.
But he can’t play the 3rd tall unless he dramatically improves his body positioning and attack in the air.
I’d prefer Caddy but he can’t ruck.

Chol has an almost guaranteed place in the team for the rest of the season and it is in his own hands that he plays to his strengths all the time he is on the field. He does that and his future looks assured.

If he can stay in games longer, put his body on the line then he could be a real weapon for us in the finals, as his marking and kicking we know is top-notch.

When Mabs has played forward he’s been third banana, which can be a tough gig. Maybe some of the perceived lack of effort is when he doesn’t want to get in the way of the big dogs. Now he’ll have to play as one of those big dogs, this week at least. Funny thing, playing in others’ shadows. I wonder whether part of Butters’ improvement this year comes from how he sees himself - and how others see him - within his new team. He doesn’t have a Dusty to defer to so he sets himself to occupy the best space two kicks out, then he takes off full of premiership cache and new found profile. Sometimes it can really help to know you’re the man.

With a haircut that has more colours than Dame Edna and a pocket full of phones, I don’t think Cholly suffers from a lack of internal confidence.
He needs mongrel and desperation. Not sure it’s in his nature but hopefully he is motivated the same way as Butler was. It’s called drinking at the last chance saloon.

I'd argue Butler's 2017 season was his best, possibly better than this year. I just think Butler lost his mojo and confidence in 2019, particularly once dropped, and with a plethora of small forward options (or so it seemed) he was the one pushed out. He's always had talent and played very consistently in 2017. It will very interesting to see how Chol is used against Adelaide.

I thought butler peaked in the early part of 18 , Even went one step better than 17 , remember when we were on that premiership high , blowing teams of the park with our run , he was a massive part of those blitzes with his pace

And then the ‘injury’.

Was this when he was trying stuff like that weird looping banana pass at full pace? Free jazz Butters was my favourite phase. As opposed to minimalist Butters, when he just didn’t pick up the ball. The Saints can have that *smile*.

The Toe poking and not getting over the footy to take a hit to keep the ball inside our forward 50 was where it all went sour.

He was at his best when the team was running and gunning and he could get in behind the defence and do as he pleased.

Had more talk about him this year in the media than he did playing in the 2017 and 2018 Damage Inc sides.

Needs to bring the ball to ground at least in those marking contests.

What do you think he has done well so far? Genuine question as so far I have seen some pretty non-competitive efforts from him.

Decent follow up on the wing, got involved after marking contest. Should have been paid that mark earlier. Wasn't but still got a kick out.

Agree he hasn't been excellent. But Talia is a big challenge. I would expect him to jump at the ball more as the game goes on.

Disappointing first quarter. Has 3 quarters to show us it really means something to him.
