Golf

Down at the golf club today. Waited for the comp field to go through and get a few holes ahead, and just go out and play 3 or 4 casual holes on my own.

Anyway, I play the 1st then walk off the green and drop a couple of balls down IN THE 3 INCH ROUGH and practice two chips to the 1st green. Next moment a guy comes over from a nearby tee and tells me to stop practicing ….“that we don’t allow that here.”

I have a discussion with him that I’m allowed to play/practice casually with 2 balls - especially if I’m just chipping from the rough. He tells me I’m not allowed to practice on the course - no matter what - that’s what the practice range is for. Not even practice putting with a ball on any of the greens. At ANY time, casual play, evening, whatever. Righty o.

Thoughts ?
My thoughts are that if you weren’t holding anyone up then who gives a *smile*. You also said you were in the rough so it’s not like you were taking divots. Some people just like to enforce the rules for no reason other than for their own ego.

I was completely on my own. Nobody behind me.

Before he came over to me, he had just wiped out on a hole that was 6 holes ahead of me, and then he had duck hooked his tee shot on the next as well. Bad mood obviously.

I walked off the course and checked in with the Head Pro and Assistant Pro. They said I was fine and said I could definitely have a practice with a couple of balls chipping out of the rough and also a putt as long as I wasn’t holding anyone up. If I wasn’t, every club member would be in trouble - especially the pennant teams and the pros as well when they’re giving on-course lessons.

At least now if anyone else pulls you up on it, you can say the head pro gave you the all clear.

May not be that easy. Apparently he’s a board member. Hah hah hah. Anyway, I was very civil with him which is a good thing I guess. No heat or anything in the conversation.

Ah well. If I get called in I’m happy to state my case and also my experience as a golfer and knowledge of what’s acceptable and what’s not. 110% confident my golf background is light years ahead of his so I’m pretty sure I could make him look like his is underdeveloped - if he wants to make a big deal of it, that is.

Hopefully he just had a bad/grumpy moment.

Thanks, that might have to wait for kids school to cease unfortunately.

Is there any maintenance involved?

My mate didn't get the courses package and he mentioned Augusta is not really "available"...

Do you use the putting function much?

No maintenance, apart from you'd inevitably have to replace the hitting mat at some point. I rotate mine and try and hit off different spots to keep it wearing too much.

Augusta appears and disappears under fake names, you have to scour online forums to find clues as to what name it is under. I reckon I played it and St Andrews 50 times each in the first month and haven't touched them since. Never been but for me Augusta is more about the vibe than the actual course so the simulator doesn't really do it justice.

I've played lots of courses I have played for real though and they all stack up really well.

Putting is definitely the worst part because it is so hard to simulate green speeds etc. I actually putt left handed on the courses, because I don't want to create bad habits, but in practice mode you can get good data about club face alignment and face and path tracking.

I should have mentioned in the cost that the hardest part is having a space for it because you obviously need the high ceiling. If you have a shed it's good but metal stuffs up some of the trackers so it still needs to be plastered out.

I ended up having a mini reno done, extended a room and had the ceiling lifted into the roof cavity with a bulkhead, so I just have a space directly above with a cut out ceiling. That was $$$$$ to do, but the screen doubles as a TV which is good for a man cave, I've added a bar and am very content.

Be warned though, I play golf with a group of 8 blokes every Sunday over the summer and anytime the weather has been hot or looking like rain we seemed to be ending up here instead of a course, which is costing me a fortune in BBQs and beer!

I would have told him to *smile* off personally, go and complain to the pro if you have an issue and he can deal with me. Can't stand golf course Hitlers.

They mentioned the possibility of doing that last year. Something about creating a top 40 or 50 or something for these events.

Surely a reconciliation has to come, the PGA tour would be exceptionally two faced to ban guys for moving to ideas that are so good they have adopted most of them.

Yeah. Lucky I didn’t though being a board member and all. I must have mellowed. Pretty pathetic by him just the same, and if by chance I have to represent myself at the club, I’ll make his patheticness very clear and embarrass him. And I don’t care the consequences.

You’d expect there’d be some reconciliation although I sense the PGA Tour is getting a bit of confidence. LIV only attracted a 280,000 tv audience last week whereas the lowly Honda attracted 2.6 million in the USA alone. Anyway, in the US it was a 0.2 rating on CW v 1.8 on NBC.

Ffs. If I hear Azinger and co go on about how windy it is at Bay Hill and how difficult it is to play in, I’m gonna lose my *smile*.

20mph. With some 30mph gusts. The flags and trees are just moving around like it’s a standard or moderate breeze. In other words, a standard day in itself.

Geez these guys speak some *smile*. And they’re so soft over there too. They had to place heaps of water on the greens in case they “got out of control”. Now they’re a foot or two slower. What a joke.

Soooooooft !!!!

Did anyone happen to see any of the wpga Athena? I remember watching it last year and I think it’s brilliant! For those who haven’t seen it, it’s a bunch of challenges, like nearest to the pin par 3. Nearest to the pin out of a bunker, nearest to the pin from a 30 metre pitch shot. It’s good fun and something different to your standard stroke play. I would love to see the pga pros do a similar thing.

Liv hitting back on TV ratings, Hutchy style.

https://www.si.com/golf/news/liv-golf-reports-surprising-tv-rating-for-first-event-on-cw-network

Been some noticeable changes in the PGA coverage as they continue to Livafy. Long drive comps, interviews with players on course, less breaks in golf action for fluff.

A couple of good articles about the current state of events in golf:

Great finish coming up in the Arny.

Spieth doing Spieth things. Can't hit a fairway yet made his way to the lead. But you can't sustain not hitting fairways and greens.

Anyone's trournament.

Jason Day at 5 under and just outside top ten continuing his good form

Yep, just a couple of holes to go and there's 8 players within a shot of the lead.

Good comeback win by Kitayama who seems a decent bloke too.

Just my personal biases but I can’t stand the likes of Scheffler or Cantlay or English - all of them being contenders towards the finish.

I have trouble disliking $cotty $cheffler because I've won a lot of money on him, I was on him before he won his first PGA tournament, but I know what you mean.
