Well, I’d always thought he had a particular technique that he worked on, but he really doesn’t. Specifically, I’d read years ago how he focusses on taking the putter back a bit on the inside and releasing it. What they call a ‘toe flow‘ style of putting as opposed to straight back and straight through or pendulum style. But I was watching some footage of him the other day and I wasn’t quite sure if that was correct or not. Hence why I watched this video. Turns out it sort of isn’t 100% correct.

He reckons he is somewhat of flow style of putter using rhythm and tempo, and not a pop putter like Rahm and others you see, but that can change from one week to the next regardless. He just goes with what he‘s feeling. Consequently, all he really works on technically, is hitting the ball off the centre of the face.

The only drill he ever does are two tees in the ground and hitting through the gate from 4 feet to the hole, and getting the ball to come off the centre of the face. He does it with one hand and then two hands. It’s like watching a machine. Holes everything …one after the other. Then, he might practice different putts …side hill, long putts, downhill, uphill etc…..but otherwise, when he plays he just putts as he feels and sees it. He talks about seeing pictures.

He reckons his style changes constantly. His set up, how he sees the ball going in the hole (ie fast or dripping in), firmer putting stroke or more rhythmic. Whatever. He just goes with what he’s feeling on the day. Nothing about toe flow style or anything.

He reckons it doesn’t matter if you take the putter back inside, outside or straight…as long as you are getting it to come off the centre, then just putt as you feel and are seeing it on any given day.

He refers to himself as being a feel and artistic putter which he reckons people probably don’t expect with him.

Hope that makes sense. Geez the guy can putt…

Thanks for that, very interesting.

I always assumed the pro's had a set routine, followed it religiously, with maybe subtle variations depending on the speed of the greens.

That is clearly not Tiger's style.

Watched the Tiger Hall of Fame induction.

It's amazing how a sporting great like Woods just has zero presence and charisma when he speaks.

Cute idea to have his daughter induct him but can't help but feel like having a golfing great speak about him would have carried more gravitas. Ten seconds of Nicklaus on the video proved it in fact. Really needed a stronger intro to balance his speech.
Yeh, some sportsman allmost become statesman like and can make great observations on life etc, tiger is a golfer only. I don't mind listening to him talk golf but otherwise is dull as you suggest.

Tiger talks about putting being very individual. Some guys work on a lot of technical stuff. Others on feel. Styles differ greatly between players, and with players like Tiger, they change individually from week to week as well.

Thanks for the summary

That's not what I would have thought either. I'm similar in a way, more a feel putter. The only difference is I hole sweet fa putts, and am poor on pressure putts.

I don't practice putting though., may have to start the two tee drill.

Amazing that he changes from week to week but is arguably the best pressure putter in history

I think he’s got a pretty consistent look to his putting, just that when you’re as fine tuned as someone like him, he probably thinks he’s making big changes. And maybe they just don’t look obvious to the observer or punters like us either.

I reckon he has that nice blend of rhythm/flow putting and solid square to the hole finish. A lot of players are one or the other. Cantlay for example is very much a flow putter….Rahm a shorter follow through type putter. Woods is that really nice combo I reckon.

And Speith?

I remember reading somewhere that he liked his take away and follow through to be the same length on all his putts, not sure if I got that right?

He's an incredible putter when he is on

Spieth, when he is on, is an amazing putter. He's good most of the time, but not in the Woods category I don't think.

He gets quite technical when it comes to reading putts. Aim point....half way marks....point of break etc etc.

Crenshaw was a good putter as was IBF early days, Day a few years ago was as good as anybody.

A mate of mine who I've maybe played over 400 rounds with is an outstanding putter. Good professional type standard of short game. He modelled his putting on Ben Crenshaw (I tried to copy my mate !) . Crenshaw was a beautiful putter.

Watched an interesting putting lesson video on Golf TV with Tiger Woods last night. Consider him and Jack the two best putters ever.

Interesting his outlook. Quite different to what I thought or expected.
Can you link it at all? Need any tips I can get!

Wish I could but it’s on GOLFTV which is a subscription service.

However, if you have Foxtel, and you sign up for their free Foxtel Rewards program, they give you free access to GOLFTV for a while. It has a heap of training and lesson stuff including a bunch of stuff exclusively on GOLFTV from Woods.

Heaps of other content as well plus early live coverage of Tour and World Golf Championship events.

Legend! I do have Foxtel, so might have to do that. Thanks mate!

Sydney weather ruining the Players.

My top 30 players are playing ****. Bloody Matsuyama didn’t even make the starting line. Geez.

Speaking of which, Adam Scott 78 ???

I’m happy. Tommy Fleetwood is my favourite. Can’t see him hanging on to a lead for another 3 rounds though.
Good chance this finishes Tuesday.

He’s very likeable, puts himself in contention but misses crucial putts in big tournaments. Be great to see him win a big one.

Interestingly every PGA Tour rule on not extending play past Monday starts with the words 'except for the Players'.

Apparently expecting storms tomorrow and Tuesday so it could spill into Wednesday.
So no Caddy’s? In all seriousness though, that would be awesome I reckon. Going in to the last round with no Caddie. Would be interesting to see the players go it alone.

Wow…..The Players is a bit of a test . In saying that pretty much a normal day on the Mornington Peninsula .

The National is having an event worth 200k next month , it’s replacing the NZ Open , it will be played midweek on the Gunamata course for anybody interested in having a look , should be some good players
