Global Warming

This is all relevant, because the points are all fair. I think what needs to happen is for a few compromises. The West needs to cut, but with more flexibility than the EU insist. We are not all mature non-mining economies that are barely growing like the EU. Also the developing world MUST come to the table, but I think they will need western $$$ to help "clean" their industries. Its not easy, it will be expensive, but we have to do something and stop thinking we have to be a "winner" out of these negotiations.

BTW this is far from a definitive idea of mine, its Fri night so keep that in mind :) I just think a bit more flexibility needs to be shown by all three sides.

Well summarised.

As an energy provider, I think Australia has to be at the forefront of developing emmission reduction techonology, an effective way to both value-add to digging stuff out of the ground while effecting emmision reduction beyond the minimal component Australia contributes.

All of it and especially the conclusion.

Carefully considered opinion on the topic as usual I see jimmy barnes. ;D

I know you enjoy my well thought out pieces on this particular subject Tooheys.

So do you think they're just poor scientists or do you think they are being dishonest?

I prefer the terms "misguided" and "well intentioned".

Though in 100 years the term "poor scientist" well prove to be apt. (Not that anyone will remember them)

Is it the assertion that man is causing the rises in carbon levels you disagree with or that a rise in water temperature will adversely affect coral reef's ability to sustain themselves? Or both?

Global warming, my arse...! These people obviously haven't been to London recently.

Why do you think this is hogwash jim broadbent? Do you know something the scientists don't?

I mean you could well be right but some sound reasoning would help your argument.

Would it satisfy you if I just said it was 'gut feel'.

So it is JB's gut vs. scientific evidence and consensus?

No offence, but I think I will stick with the evidence-based conclusions at this point.

I try not to think with my gut. If I'm serious about understanding the world, thinking with anything besides my brain, as tempting as that might be, is likely to get me into trouble.

Carl Sagan - When asked a question to which he didn't know the answer and after he firmly said so and the questioner persisted: 'But what is your gut feeling?'

.

Global warming? Probably.

But please...

Don't quote "evidence-based conclusions" at me, the bloody scientists keeping finding new evidence and keep jumping to new conclusions.

;)

Was that based on the weather outside today?

Now you are taking the p!ss Tooheys. Clearly can't base it on today's weather alone (as cold as it is), I also included December the third's as well for balance. However, the gut feel body of evidence is now overwhelming.

Note also the correct term today is 'climate change' not 'global warming'. Useful term that one, can never be wrong.

;D True that.

However I think you'll find that was another George W Bush term that was coined in attempt to dampen down the hype.

Up there with 'War against terror'.

nor brazil .ive been watching ice road truckers on fox and i find it interesting that the blokes that have been running the road for years say that last years road was about average..not the longest season and not the shortest...also on fox i watch "the deadlist catch" and the last 2 seasons they have had above normal ice packs?funny how the people that actually live in these climates and constantly depend on the weather because it affects their day to day, arent of the opinion that the climate is any differant, just cylical?but then again they aren't the"learned ones" are they?

There's a kid's news program on here called Newsround at about 5.30 in the arvos - only goes for about 10 minutes (just before Neighbours :hihi). I saw it the other day showing the icepacks cracking and melting at the poles and saying how it was all due to the human effect on climate change. There was no mention of the fact this warming and cooling of the atmoshere has been going on for millions of years producing similar results to what we're seeing currently.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for less emissions, recycling, saving the forests etc, but I wish these programs would put forward a balanced view of the facts, rather than just this scare-mongering propaganda that we as humans are completely to blame for this phase of the atmospheric cycle.
