General Trade Discussion 2022

Where the ruckmen get hundreds of points for just tapping the ball, and who cares where it goes and who gets it
Wrong, there are no points for tapping it to a neutral position, there is in fact a point penalty for tapping it to the opposition & only hit outs to advantage add to a player's points tally.

I'm confused?
After the trade period ends, then it's time to see the best 23 for 2023.

Geelong

B:
Jake Kolodjashnij, Sam De Koning, Jack Henry
HB: Zach Guthrie, Tom Stewart, Jed Bews
C: Max Holmes, Patrick Dangerfield, Isaac Smith
HF: Gryan Miers, Jeremy Cameron, Brad Close
F: Tyson Stengle, Tom Hawkins, Gary Rohan
FOLL: Rhys Stanley, Mark Blicavs, Cameron Guthrie
I/C: Mitch Duncan, Brandan Parfitt, Mark O’Connor, Tom Atkins
Medical Sub: Zach Tuohy

"Not many changes are needed to a side that won the Grand Final by 81 points. The defence is young and healthy.
Elder statesman Mitch Duncan may play a similar role to Joel Selwood this season, coming off the bench and missing a game here and there to keep him fresh. New recruit Jack Bowes will likely be the first cab off the rank to fill a midfield or back-flank spot should form/injury warrant a change.
In the forward line, Gary Rohan’s age may mean he also misses the odd game to rest up, with Ollie Henry a handy replacement as he tries to earn a regular spot in the dynamic, pressurised Cats forward line.
Others on the outer such as new recruit Tanner Bruhn, Sam Menegola, Jonathon Ceglar, and Esava Ratugolea may have to wait their turn to break into the reigning premiers’ side.
With Pick 7 also in the upcoming National Draft, it is an enviable position Geelong finds itself in."

So from me - As well as losing their inspirational leader, a four-time premiership player not one of the three new recruits from the '10/10 media graded' trade period are named in their best 23?

Richmond
B: Nathan Broad, Robbie Tarrant, Dylan Grimes
HB: Nick Vlastuin, Noah Balta, Daniel Rioli
C: Marlion Pickett, Tim Taranto, Kamdyn McIntosh
HF: Maurice Rioli Jr, Jack Riewoldt, Shai Bolton
F: Noah Cumberland, Tom Lynch, Dustin Martin
FOLL: Toby Nankervis, Dion Prestia, Jacob Hopper
I/C
: Trent Cotchin, Jayden Short, Ivan Soldo, Liam Baker
Medical Sub: Jack Graham

"Richmond was one of the many winners from the trade period as it put itself firmly back into premiership contention in 2023.
Although the Tigers have lost experienced premiership players, Shane Edwards and Kane Lambert, their midfield won’t lose much talent bringing in two former Giants in Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto.
With the depth of the midfield group now expanded, Richmond can use its best six in many different ways. Both Taranto and Hopper are powerful inside midfielders, who can roll forward which will allow the likes of Shai Bolton and Dustin Martin to push through the middle as well."

From me - So they named both the Richmond in-comings in the best 23.

How did they win the draft? Bringing in bench sitters?
Some have called us winning it. One of the biggest upgrades we have seen to a team that was already close if these two guys are fit.

Agree with your analysis on Geelong. They have brought in depth and age may remove some of Geelong’s talent too - although we have similar risk albeit a smaller group with Riewoldt / Cotchin. So far they are behind as Edwards was barely best 22 and lambert wasn’t playing anyway. Selwood was crucial early in the GF.

Their big win is pick 7 and potential future upside but nothing concrete.

The long term evidence is that when Grundy was at his best he was number 1 ruckman and playing the majority of his time on the ball. He will now play 50% at best in that role. So will the undisputed best ruckman in the AFL

It's not that I don't think Grundy was and can still be a very good player, it is that he won't be able to replicate the role he had when was so good.

To me it's like Carlton recruiting Tom Lynch when the already have McKay and Curnow.
Agree man. Especially about bringing in players who don't fix your needs.
I like Brisbane's players they brought in Dunkley and Gunston but I don't believe they fixed their needs - Defence.
Their midfield and forwards are pretty loaded to a very good point.

2019 – 2,004 points – ranked 1 offence, but 7th best defence
2020 – With shorter games still finished third in offence - 1184, but 7th best defence
2021 – 2,131 points – ranked 1st offence, but 5th best defence
2022 - 2,147 points – 2nd to the Tigers 1st best offence ;) but the 10th best defence

I just think they need to fix that defence more than a Gunston in particular. My mate up there close to their board members says Marcus Adams is still not 100% from his sources from the concussion he got. He didn't play in the final against us and they definitely need him back. I just think they needed a couple of players down back.

If the bench increases to 5 players I suspect many clubs will roll with 2 ruckmen, Richmond won a premiership with 2 rucks in the same side, no one would be complaining with a Cox/Naitanui combo, I think there are definite situations where 2 rucks are viable.

As for list management decisions, this isn't just about Grundy vs Hopper or Taranto vs Mitchell, it's about the complete package & whilst I think Richmond's recruiting has been solid the opportunity cost will be the players selected with 12, 19 & next year's first (also accounting for the players selected with our late third rounders).

At the moment I'm still sitting on the fence, I'm feeling Jefferson slides, Keeler probably available at 19. Those two players satisfy our immediate need for talls. I think if we manage to grab Lemmey/Gruzewski with a late pick then it probably tips back to our favour. If the Ben King rumour is true then maybe we have this covered.

Wasn't The Ben King thing a tongue in cheek made up rumour. Not based on any substantial evidence..

I do know the clubs are all incommunicado with the player's agents during the year - is your guy happy there, is he going to re-sign or is he looking to move, we'd like to facilitate a move when he's contracts done or when he's ready, etc etc.

Sometimes it takes 2-3 years of chat between both parties. Lot's of the rumours end up on the scrap heap, a few that progress further and become reality - Lynch, Taranto. I know both were being mentioned 2-3 years before it happened from Richmond people.

Danger and Bowes share the same management, and Danger sending him messages earlier in the year, then six months later surprise surprise he picks the Cats to move too. And O'Meara when he was thinking about the Giants, his agent told him Freo have had an interest in you too, how bout them?

So yeah the Ben King rumour....is likely just a rumour!!

I hear this argument about 5 on the bench but it doesn't change the amount of time Grundy would spend on the ball. All it does mean is that it is more likely clubs will play 2 rucks

Who cares if the media call Geelong 'winning' the trade period when we have done well?
We don't need to see it similar to the actual competition where there is only one premier. There are many winners from the trades.

Imo North have done reasonable considering JHF was leaving, to turn 2x#1s into 2 and 3 and a future 1st, though offset by a future 2nd which will be around 20.
SO they had an ordinary result to let JHF leave but they've made the best of it

Let them say the cats won, we have succeeded in what we wanted too

And on Melbourne, Jackson has been leaving for 18+ months.
They traded him too cheaply, but then brought in a similar player in Grundy.

I'm not looking at Grundy fixing their forward woes, instead he is maintaining their team balance in filling the Jackson role.

For sure they shoulda traded in a key forward.... but no one else did.
My question would be is Grundy an opportunity cost for a Ben King etc?
It would look like it.

RICHMOND’S TRADE GRADE FOR 2022

BY SEN 5 HOURS AGO
Fe1TnANUcAEGPZV.jpg

RICHMOND

Rendell says: I know they had to give up 12, 19 and a future 1st, but Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper into their lineup is fantastic.
It makes them a massive chance to win the flag again next year.
Trent Cotchin in his last year, but their midfield looks super with these two blokes in there. Assuming Dion Prestia is back to full fitness, they’re going to challenge again.

They should just get an A+ for prising Hopper out of Geelong for a start.
They’ve reset here and they’re going to have to do a Geelong over the next few years to bring in these types of players to replace those retiring.

Trade grade: A+

I have been saying it since the trades finished. We were easily the best in this trade period, bringing in elite talent. Now, Bruhn, Henry and Bowes will play games here and there. They will not change the fortunes of Geelong in 2023, Taranto and Hopper will. Yes cats did well but some media giving them A+ is a deadset crock.

I found myself debating with some cats fans. I just told them the only reason the media are harping on about your trading period is pick 7 more than the players you brought in, now if you didn't get that pick no one would bat an eyelid. It's unbelievable that hey think they did so much better than everyone else.

Trying to explain that we actually brought in elite talent Taranto and Hopper and they go on about Bowes lol, Bruhn who has potential but was in and out of the GWS side. Herny shows a bit but unless there are injuries he'll be playing reserves.

I even said to some, If 16 other clubs had a choice between Taranto/Hopper duo and Bruhn/Bows/Henry who do you think they would choose, this ain't a trick question.
Man, these cats fans are delusional. If the cats nabbed Taranto and Hopper we would be envious.

I'm still in awe with Blair pulling this off, you just don't get two elite mids in one shot. Both these two are big-bodied, play the game hard and also kick goals.

Yes it’s nothing short of a coup, a complete 180. It’s going to take a while for everyone else to catch on. Let them keep their delusions.

Younger Bro sent me a text a few days ago singin n dancin about his old flag winning pensioner team bringing in 3 young first rounder kids who were on the fringe of being champions, plus pick 7 in the draft.
Reminded him that one of his new stars was an overpaid complete throw away four year list clogger n the other two were playing magoos footy. Asked him why Ollie Henry was crying to go back home to mummy when he was only an hours drive down the road.
Haven't heard back from him yet, no idea why.

Absolutely correct.
We’ve confused them by recruiting two A grade gun midfielders.
It would be easier for them to digest us getting one star but two has boggled their minds.
Arguably as good a midfield as Melbourne who appear the benchmark.
The results next year will wake a few of them up.

Especially as one was courted by Geecheat and told them no.
