The talk was that cats were already into Bowes at the start of the year. Now that the trade season is done, I am amazed that a team like North didn't grab the Bowes/7 deal. Surely they have salary cap space and they need the new talent at pick 7 or even trade 7 for a classy mid. Perplexing...
Where’s the fun in discussing young players if you’re only dealing in facts?Moot issue at the moment. JVR, Brown, Bauer etc all haven’t played one single game of senior AFL football yet so determining winners and losers is years off.
True.Where’s the fun in discussing young players if you’re only dealing in facts?
Notice the AFL are making noises about closing the salary dump window again. How convenient - they open it for this deal and then say that didn't work so we're going to change it back. How *smile* stupid do they think we are?The talk was that cats were already into Bowes at the start of the year.
Maybe they had inside info that he would departing for salary cap reasons and there would be an incentive to take him on (I.e early draft pick).
Possibly other teams including north had no chance (to get Bowes) as they were so far behind the 8 ball. Only finding out about the salary damp recently.
Exclusive footage of your average Melbourne/Hawthorn fan:Between them and Melbourne, they have the biggest front running fans in the league.
When they aren’t top 4 certs, they go missing very easily and very quickly the Hawthorn fans.
Reverse psychology? "C'mon kid! We know you can't do it!"Melbourne will play VanRooyen very early next year. They think he's a major part of their woes next year.
There's talk Collingwood's offer to pay 300k of Grundy's salary was if they got a first-rounder. For pick 27, Melbourne might be stumping up 850. They can obviously afford it, probably by paying bare minimum for key forwards but you get what you pay for.Don't confuse Jackson's defection with Grundy's value, two separate issues, I'm looking at each trade in isolation and weighing up the value.
1. Grundy (pick 27 & 300k salary)
Outstanding value, particularly if the sub gets scrapped for an extra player
2. Mitchell (pick 41 & 50 & part salary)
Pretty good bet, low ball risk in a draft with potentially 50 selections.
These were the classic Moneyball trades, both players still have good football left in them & could easily finish top 5 in the B&F. Both Collingwood & Melbourne fair weight for top 4 so a premiership would vindicate these additions. In the case of Melbourne they haven't necessarily had a net gain, more stabilising the list but they improved their draft hand this year & next.
They don't care if we're stupid or see right through them as many of us do. They just care that we're powerless.Notice the AFL are making noises about closing the salary dump window again. Mitchell will be interesting to watch under Fly. Will have to be rebroken to use the ball forward.
How many of them would you pay $700k a year for ?If you look at the ruck depth across the entire AFL this trade represents even more bang for the buck. Plenty of pensioners still offering their services well into their 30s, Stef Martin (35), McEvoy (33), Ryder (34), Goldy (34), Hickey (32 next season), Stanley (32 next season), Mummy (35 upon retirement).
I reckon the risk with Grundy has been overblown, second best ruck in the comp with plenty of football left.
Nah. That's a potential breach next year, because it's still this year they aren't breaching yet. All they have to do is dump a player or two off the list during trade week and they're in with a clean sheet for next year.It is about monitoring breaches. If the cap is $13m and a club has $14m in contracts in place for next year, they have breached the rules.
Reckon Bowes has played it fairly smart. Pretty sure he restricted the possibles to Hawforn, Essendrugs n Moggies, then chose the Moggies.Who's to say North didn't try, I think at some stage they said a lot of clubs were interested but as GC were jettisoning Bowes from their club like a piece of trash, it was totally Bowe's decision on who he narrowed his choices down to and who would choose North.
That said he has made a bold choice for himself picking the Cat's that he can break into their midfield, if he can he has chosen well if not he will have just shortened his career whereas as Geelong will have the consolation of the player they pick at pick 7.
He'd be seriously spudding up if he can't manage 30 goals a year with Smelbourne's dominant mid field supplying him ball. Gawn / Grundypants ruck combo with Peetrakka, Olly, Viney, Harmes, plus Brayshaw, Salem etc bringing the ball forward.Schache has at least kicked 24 goals in a season, that would probably be the rationale if he can hit those heights.
Yeah they didn’t like the look of it but were helpless ( if you want to believe that , no proper rules in place ) and allowed it through to the keeper. They don't care if we're stupid or see right through them as many of us do. They just care that we're powerless.
I think Grundy has 3 years of elite football left, after that he'll be overpaid but not superfluous, I think it's a fair trade-off.How many of them would you pay $700k a year for ?
martin , McEvoy & Mummy have all been cooked for their last 2 years and Stanley is an athletic beast that has cray physical attributes but not a genuine Ruck imo. Ryder yes but has probably missed as much as he has played.
But i dont rate Rucks highly unless they are Gawn level (which i rate alot higher than Grundy as a player not just Ruck)
Me and my son used to love watching Grundy at his best. He was a dominant player. Deadset gun.I think Grundy has 3 years of elite football left, after that he'll be overpaid but not superfluous, I think it's a fair trade-off.
2021 was a good year, this year not too bad but injury struck & Cameron & Cox presented as a cheap alternative. I reckon this one comes back to bite, Melbourne vs Collingwood has added interest, particularly around finals time.Me and my son used to love watching Grundy at his best. He was a dominant player. That seems like a long time ago now though-maybe 2018?
I'm not sure what you mean by 'good'. He was a star for quite a while. Looking at his Brownlow votes there has been a fair drop-off since 2019. The graphs heading downwards. 2018- 17 votes=10th, 2019-23 votes=6th (same as Dusty), 2020-6 votes, 2021-9 votes, 2022-1 vote.2021 was a good year, this year not too bad but injury struck & Cameron & Cox presented as a cheap alternative. Agree, Grundy still has plenty of good footy in him.
