General Trade Discussion 2022

There are always risks associated with future trading and thats where our coaches and list management have the intel to judge where we are placed.

We finished 7th this year and lost possibly 7 games that would could have or should have won , Possibly missing a top 2 spot and all that based off no Martin this year and carrying Edwards.

If we are not in the top 8 in 2023 after acquiring taranto and hopper combined with a rejuvenated Dusty and another year into our juniors providing depth and competition for spots the we bloody well deserve what we get but i would highly doubt we miss top 8

Soldo replacement is something you seem to place alot of value on but either you rate soldo very highly or dont rate Ryan
with another year into Ryan i would be pretty happy to have some faith in Ryan to atleast provide a reasonable contest to get us through and if required to get a mature ruck as insurance
I'm old school when it comes to rucks, good ones can make a huge difference, a 5 man bench will only increase their worth. I see this area as an achilles heel heading into next year & can see us being exploited when we come against the best in the competition. For this reason I'm frosty about locked & loaded grandstanding, I also think there's a few clubs knocking on the door of the 8 who could easily supplant Richmond next year. Soldo isn't untouchable but his contribution is being undersold & trading him means we have weakened that area. Ryan is a big lump of a lad & is showing promise but I'm not so sure he would do well against the elite big men of the competition. That in isolation could wipe out any advantage we have in the area of clearances. Underestimate the importance rucks at your peril.

Ok, so we close our Premiership window right now if we don't do this, whilst we still have years in Martin, Lynch, Jack, Cotch, Prestia, Grimes, Pickett, Kmac etc.

Your approach (Mitchell / grundy) looks great on paper, but has a misunderstanding of our gameplan and the way we play footy. It wouldn't work and we might aswell try and trade all of our guns out if we just blindly went to the draft with a bunch of mid teens picks. Get set for some pain over the next 10 years if thats our plan, as it will take a while to rebuild the list, and potentially waste the talent of our mid tier group too, if all in on the draft (which has its own opportunity cost).

There are opportunity costs with the trade players ion approach and there are opportunity costs with going to the draft. Don't make out its risk only 1 way, there is risk in both plans.
We shall see, I suspect Collingwood will plump for Mitchell & they are in a similar situation with clearances & the need to get first use.

Grundy goes for pick 27.
Collingwood must think he is finished
A fit Grundy wouldve made us unbeatable

The Dees are only paying a 3rd of his salary. I sure hope he is.
Wow. Only a third. Something amiss here. Grundy for a third of his salary and pick 27 seems pretty good shopping to me - definitely worth a punt. With Grundy and Treloar and now DeGoey it is a wonder the Pies can pay their own players.

Other way around isn't it. They are paying 2/3rds of his salary, hence somewhere around $700k?
Even at 700k it's only 300k more than Soldo. Given we could have stitched this up with pick 31 & given a guy like Lloyd Meek is going for a mid second rounder, I'd say it was close to the bargain of the draft. When you consider guys like Stef Martin & Goldy are mid 30's and still required players, taking on Grundy whilst still in his twenties is a sound investment.

Strange trade. Collingwood actually need him more than Melbourne (who have invested massively cap wise in this position while they still have no key forwards....... lol) They are even talking getting Schache in baha!

And for many obvious reasons outlined in an earlier post, we were even less of a fit at this point in time.

Hope they get him. We need more laughs next season.
