General Trade Discussion 2022

Just wondering what picks and future picks the bank at GWS currently hold, and what we are likely to get if Soldo is traded separately?
2 in the 50s and 2 in the 60s. The 2 in the 50s would be handy although won't be enough to get academy kids as you need a pick under 40 to get that. Means we won't get the Tiwi Is kid in that case.

The lack of quality mids selected from 2017 onwards has put us in this position. This is my main criticism of Clarke.
To be fair there wasn't a lot on offer at our picks. He could have kept pick 15 in 2017 I suppose, and taken Zac Bailey and Balta instead of Higgins, Balta and CJ. But then we wouldn't have pick 19 this year to trade with, and Bailey is yet to establish himself as a mid. In 2018 Rowbottom instead of RCD was the best we could have done but not sure that does a lot for us. Chad Warner instead of Dow in 2019 would have been nice, and Zips will tell you Max Holmes in 2020 instead of deferring the pick to Brown the next year would have been good too. But that would have been Clarke shooting the absolute eyes out of it.

Yeah fair nuff.

If somebody had said before all this started

#13+#15+#21+#31 gets you Taranto & Hopper im pretty sure we all would take that

specially during games watching Richmond getting smashed in the midfield
Sure, get the papers out, lock that pick 15 up now & ensure we've got a viable second ruck because the bill could be a truckload worse than that. The fact that people are back slapping each other based on a best case scenario tells me there's little acknowledgement of the downside. If pick 15 becomes a pick between 5-10, how will you feel? If finding a Soldo replacement becomes another pick around 30, does that concern you? If we're parting with something in addition to that we could be looking at a 6 way opportunity cost, for two inside midfielders, one coming back from a knee injury & a player who will effectively be a free agent next year. The sums in this instance simply don't add up, not if you are serious in your contingency planning. This is the type of bravado that gets clubs into trouble.

Can Matthew Clarke build a list? That I feel is still unresolved & grabbing a key forward this year made a truckload of sense. I've said my bit about trading future firsts for inside mids, it's a no-no & despite the fact I rate Hopper as a footballer I could never justify the outlay. You clearly feel differently, you didn't like my critique of the Brown pick either, so I suppose we're polar opposites when it comes to the best approach for list building.

Clarke doesn't build the list. He is the recruiting mgr so recommends any draftees we take.

Hartley is the GM of football talent and list Mgr. He does the negotiation and makes the call on contracts, trades (with assistance from Clarke, Dimma and no doubt Balmey when needed).

Clarke reports to Hartley who has overall responsibility of the list structure/build.

Quoted for truth.
The only truth is a bunch of rusted on supporters hoping that we finish top 4 & can scrap together a competitive ruck division with a 1 gamer & Ben Miller. I think your truth ball needs some Mr Sheen, nothing wrong with being an optimist but soothsaying isn't a viable alternative to effective contingency planning.

I couldn't be bothered arguing semantics Leysy, Clarke was responsible for bringing in some junior mids & his failure in that area has caused a ripple effect which has forced the club into its current predicament of dipping into future reserves. I'd say the list build is well behind schedule & will be made harder by being a bit player at next year's draft.

There are always risks associated with future trading and thats where our coaches and list management have the intel to judge where we are placed.

We finished 7th this year and lost possibly 7 games that would could have or should have won , Possibly missing a top 2 spot and all that based off no Martin this year and carrying Edwards.

If we are not in the top 8 in 2023 after acquiring taranto and hopper combined with a rejuvenated Dusty and another year into our juniors providing depth and competition for spots the we bloody well deserve what we get but i would highly doubt we miss top 8

Soldo replacement is something you seem to place alot of value on but either you rate soldo very highly or dont rate Ryan
with another year into Ryan i would be pretty happy to have some faith in Ryan to atleast provide a reasonable contest to get us through and if required to get a mature ruck as insurance

Yeah cos Leysy has a long history of always supporting what the club does..... Not.

Well said, thats my position. Ryan should be able to match Soldo's output. I'm not as high on hm as some but I think he can match Soldo 2022.

Ok, so we close our Premiership window right now if we don't do this, whilst we still have years in Martin, Lynch, Jack, Cotch, Prestia, Grimes, Pickett, Kmac etc.

Your approach (Mitchell / grundy) looks great on paper, but has a misunderstanding of our gameplan and the way we play footy. It wouldn't work and we might aswell try and trade all of our guns out if we just blindly went to the draft with a bunch of mid teens picks. Get set for some pain over the next 10 years if thats our plan, as it will take a while to rebuild the list, and potentially waste the talent of our mid tier group too, if all in on the draft (which has its own opportunity cost).

There are opportunity costs with the trade players ion approach and there are opportunity costs with going to the draft. Don't make out its risk only 1 way, there is risk in both plans.
