GAMEDAY v hawks Round 23

Thanks for the clarification Sin. Begs the question. If he was identified as an outstanding talent by our peeps and we were simply thwarted in our plans to get him into the program by Essendon’s earlier MSD pick, then why did we not go hard again to get him back? He was gettable after all. Hawks did very well.
How do you know we didn’t ?

The other thing is that he spent maybe 6-7 months at Richmond including pre season and that was in the vfl program not as a full time footballer. His ties with us wouldn’t have been particularly strong

Yep, that’s the rule. You’d think professional players would know it.
What is the rule, you can play on and not be tackled? Not sure about that one, he never even went behind his mark - it’s not a free-for-all once you move forward of the mark you’re fair game, they don’t always wait for umps play-on call

That’s one of those calls where the umpire wants everyone to know he is relevant “look at moi, look at moi”. No feel for the game. NFI

Not sure how else you measure these things.
In my view you don’t try to because we don’t know what happens behind closed doors.
I’m not specifically talking about you but to me there are lots of assumptions made about what happens or doesn’t happen at football clubs which we can’t possibly confirm one way or another.
I have posted in the past that I know a person who was in the player agent business in the past and I learned from him that we know just a very small amount of what happens behind the scenes in regards to discussions on players.

We need to deal with facts on D’Ambrosio. He was identified by our vfl system and played 7-8 games for us and was picked up as pick 3 in the 2022 MSD by Essendon. We had pick 10.
We had no chance of getting him, the system conspired against us. Same with Durham.
It is disappointing but I can’t see how our team did anything wrong with either of them.
Our vfl recruiting team obviously do a great job identifying talent.
FWIW, and the Bummers weren't smart enough to keep him either. However, it's a very frustrating system where there is little reward for your 'vfl recruiting team obviously do a great job identifying talent.'
In fact, your opponents get to reap it!
More AFL stupidity.

Yeah, it’s been mentioned on here before that there should be some sort of system in the MSD in particular for clubs to access their VFL talent.
That being said we took Gray from Essendon vfl of course

Good point.
We’ve been able to pick a couple up from our VFL program as well.
Other posters who watch the VFL games have mentioned Davidson as another possible. So at least we’re getting them through the door.
Davidson is just one; there are other possibilities too: e.g. Mutaz, May and more.

Maybe clubs should get 1st access in he MSD or rookie drafts and get to match in the ND?

Something like that Brodders.

It is also good way to incentivise clubs to attract VFL talent that has the potential to play AFL.

Especially being as they are starting to try and call it a reserves league. Richmond in particular see it as a development league which is what the league should be all about IMO.

In my view you don’t try to because we don’t know what happens behind closed doors.
We see things differently. In my view, your way is the best way to consign an organisation to perpetual mediocrity. The club is accountable to its members and must always be assessed against key performance measures for both on and off field operations. What happens behind closed doors is irrelevant. I’m only interested in outcomes.

In light of everything that has transpired over the last 2 yrs, reckon it’s fair enough that members should be holding all decision makers within the club to account. Not saying I want to slash and burn the joint, but in my eyes everyone is on notice.

Too many pigeons flying through my kitchen window for me not to take note.

Go back to what this discussion started with which was a criticism of maybe not chasing D’Ambrosio when he was available. My point is very simple, you don’t know if they did or they didn’t and neither will you ever know because no club is going to announce publicly every discussion they have about every player, and neither should they.

AFL clubs are organisations with management and they are run by a board and management, including the management of the football operation itself. Sure they should be judged on outcome and in my mind 3 premierships in the last 8 years is a pretty good outcome.

Outcomes are not about every detail. Did we chase D’Ambrosio is one tiny aspect of a large outcome.

We are at the point now where every single decision is questioned and every single person employed is scrutinised by some supporters. If Luigi the boot studder was still there he would be copping it as well. To me it is this constant questioning and bagging (by some) of every single thing the club does that has far more danger of hurting the club because if they listen to it they will be scared to do anything fearing a supporter backlash.

That’s the way I see it and I know it is not popular with some but to me this is the time for cool heads and a bit of patience.

EDIT: this is not about you in particular !!!

I think you missed the nuance of my pigeon metaphor…!

Look Sin, I get it. You love the club, as do I, as do most other posters on this forum. We had the most amazing ride between 17-20. Our last flag was four yrs ago. The last 2 years have been eyebrow raising. This yr by any measure has been horrible. There is absolutely a time and place for nostalgia, but right now, all I’m interested in is our next flag.

I would hope the club holds the same view.
