Game Day - Tiges v Deez Round 20, 2023

Petty career high goals 2, today 6. Melksham most goals this year 2, today 4. Van Rooyen career high goals 3, today 4.

For me our backline was just too poor but yes the gates opened in the last.
They smashed us with inside 50's
75-43
Thats bottom 4 stuff

So let's get the umpires out of the way first, they were disgusting the catalyst to why the Shemans started their run. The softest frees you will ever see. Before that, it was an arm wrestle and could've gone either way. Umps gifted them a few in the last and once they had a 3-goal lead they spread more and opened us up.

Several times we got out to a 20-point lead and then the margin was cut by errant turnovers, 50-meter penalties, and just dumb ass footy to gift dees goals.

Now On Mini, to beat the bottom 4 side in the Hawks and not make one change was utterly wrong. Cumberland kicks 6 and can't get a look in. In his last 3 games, netted 10 goals, 15 disposals, and 6 marks average per game. Seriously, the match committee has a lot to answer for.

Based on last week's performance, Mansell had to go out for Cumbers. So he backed up his 0.1 last week with 0.0 this week. I've said it before he's just an average footballer. Who knows what could have happened had Cumbers played, could've kicked 3 or 4 like he did last time when we played the dees.
We had no one with presence, I said during the week, our goals are coming from our mids, and we needed Cumberland in to mix it up.

Petty the backman kicks 6, Van Stupid kicks 4, punched in the face Melksham kicks 4. These 3 kicked 14 from their 20.

We love Cotch great servant of this football club but had one of his quieter games with only 9 disposals.
Miller in his last 3 games he has averaged 5 disposals, 1.7 marks and has kicked 2 goals. No logical reason why hes in, just coasting and simply not good enough. Before anyone says he's backup to Soldo, what holding the magic trick bag as he's been virtually invisible, rather just concede and go Pickett in the ruck or bring in Ryan again.
Jack 8 disposals and 1 goal, how the match committee cannot see that the forward line is not functioning beggars belief.
What irks me and I'm sure others too when we win the cracks are hidden, but we can all see whos performing and who's not.

Nank comes in for Miller
Short comes in for Banks
And Cumberland should come in for Mansell

Still undecided on Mini, we still seem to be playing the same way when under Dimma only difference is we have more urgency now. Our run and carry isn't like it used to be and our pressure is on and off.

Once we won the 3 flags the game changed, and we haven't really changed with it.
Another thing i question is selection criteria, reward players who are consistently performing in the ressies and drop players who aren't.

6 wins and 3 losses is a decent enough return but the 3 that we lost were against Port, Lions, and Dees so unable to bridge the gap with the top 4 teams.

Now the positiveness in me says that we can still make the 8, which we can mathematically (need to win 3 from the last 4), starting next Friday night V Dogs, then Saints and North at the G. Then Port last round, by then we'll know if that game will mean anything or not to us.

I missed a lot of the last, agree with those pointing out the defensive failure (WTF happened??) but cannot buy the Pickett hate. Had a very competitive game. I wouldn’t have played him based on form but did well today I thought. We are old and buggered up. Also, I copped a swearing warning from the mods. Thought that was a bit rich. Anyone else get one?
IMO, in situations like these, expressing yourself as *smile* shows no expression. Ever since the Rosy days, I really don't think we have kids on this forum.

Mainly fell apart after halftime. Midfield tired, Soldo fatigued especially, Miller useless in support & defence were having a poor day anyway, were overwhelmed. Couldn’t win ball, let alone drive it out into attack.

This all stems from a non existent forward line - midfield has to work excessively hard to make up from the deficiency ahead of the ball. Eventually they tire and the numbers turn against us.

This all pens back to the draft from 2015 onwards.
Where's the kids to replace Cotchin Riewodlt Grimes Nakas etc??
You cant afford 7 yrs off misses it will burn you in the long term.
We were winning flags noone gave a toss Higgins after 17, Dow & Collier Dawkins throw in Coleman Jones and Brown
Why aren't they best 22??

It's were we are at sadly .. the recruiting teams obsession for getting half back flankers .. instead of Midfielders and and Tall Forwards has not helped us at all ..
They have recurited like Jack , Cotch , Meatball , Lynch and Dusty etc will play forever in 2019 form :( . Big important offseason coming up for the Tigers .

I think this game does reflect where we are, a middling team with a need for new players who can replace the premiership heroes who are ageing.

Just on Petty, I am not familiar with him, everyone seems to bag him. But, what I saw today was a player who only needs maybe 1ft separation and can clunk a mark. Very sure hands today and he outmanoeuvred Young and Balta a couple of times, just seemed to read the ball better. Tall too. Watching close up when they were kicking to the Punt Rd End he looked difficult to spoil.

Agree we should have had Cumberland in. He kicked 6 last week and our forward line is not good - not surprising when we are patching it together, but we should have been recruiting forwards a few years back and losing a player of the calibre of Lynch is always an issue for any team. Cumberland having to sit out this week because of the stupidity of the VFL draw means a real missed opportunity. We need speed up forward and we leave Cumberland out, and we also have a winger playing forward while the other winger (KMac) could provide more run up forward than Pickett. Need some changes there, although nothing makes up for the inside 50 deficit.

Too late to revisit that now. What’s done is done. Main goal from here is to recruit better & develop the talent better. The playing list is out of balance - no key forwards, too many half back flankers, reserve midfielders poor etc. We all know that - so message to the club - ‘So fix it’!!

He's not. But our backline used to be able work a bloke like that. Broad or Grimes or Vlas would work off their man to help whoever was on him. Didn't see that happen once today.
So is this a loss of cohesion between our backs? Or just a few blokes, mostly Grimes, losing a yard so just don't have the ability to close the gap the way they used to?

That inside 50 deficit is a problem. Martin is still dangerous but Prestia & Cotchin are the worry. Both smart footballers who are still impacting, but increasingly in cameos, not across 4 quarters.

Now they didnt all play forward all day , however Jack, Mansell, Pickett and Miller contributed 1 goal between them , this has to change

Thought the intensity of the game was as good as we’ve played this year.

In all I take a positive out of yesterdays game , youngsters stepping up and been in a very winnable position all while we are having zero influence from players who will hopefully be replaced over summer

The Nank suspension hurt today. A Nank/Soldo combo was the perfect tonic to beat Gawn today.
Was going to post the same today.

Two suspensions have cost us I feel.

Broad earlier possibly cost , being conservative 1 win and a possibility of winning last night a chance as Gawn did what he wanted and played all the last quarter, whereas we:

Took Soldo off for more than 6 mins.

One stage Dusty took a boundary throw in.

Pickett

Balta

While we subbed Miller?

Where this questions asked of the coach as well as taking Grimes off for 9 mins in the first??????

Costly suspensions and a wrong lever pulled on the sub. ( waiting’s view ).

We were asking so much of Jack in that last quarter.

21-6 I50 to Melb. ( in the last ) Avalanche.
Clearances smashed.
We looked slow in that last 10 mins of the last.
