Game Day Tigers v Lions

How good was it watching the old codger losing it on the boundary? Where was the grinning and laughing last night?
The notepad has filled a complaint for assault.

Charlie Cameron was spotted at Cash Converters in the morning.
Selling his Motorbike???

@LeeToRainesToRoach, do you have the average age of the teams last night. I have a Lions mate who is swearing blind this morning that they were younger and have more improvement in them.

Their fans love stats as much as their coach!

We won despite the huge gap in frees....11 to 18 if I remember correctly.

And I reckon Dusty was robbed of a goal. The ball was touched they said.

Could only watch on TV of course, but it did not look touched to me.

He is lost when they lose.
Just a constant roll out of cheap excuses.
Anyone who watched that game saw the difference between contenders & pretenders.
Brisbane are us of 1995/2001.
Nah we were better in 95 and 01, at least we made Prelims.

Yes, this was their youngest team since 2018. That year they had 10 younger teams than last night and won only one of those games. They've won only 14 of their last 75 when aged under 24.3.

It would've been a feather in their cap to have got across the line, but they didn't pick a 22 to win last night's game, even in our depleted state.

The more I watch the Lions, the more I think the "togetherness" that Brown has been commending them for, is all for show. They sure don't play like a team, they play like individuals always taking the option for goal rather than look for a better option.

Compare that to the Tiges, Jack, George , Higgo all missed kicks at goal looking for players in a better position that didn't work out.

Even take a look at a couple that we scored, the goal in the 4th (I think) when Jack kicked it on the goal line, Shai received the handball around 15m out, in relative space, central, didn't kick for goal, handballed to Jack for a guaranteed goal. He removed the small % chance he would miss with that handball, thats the team thing. The George goal last week when Chol had the ball, could have taken the snap, but was smart enough and unselfish enough to look for a better positioned player.

Now, imagine you are Cameron. In both those examples he kicks for goal. He may kick them, but they are lower % chances, and thats the Lions in a nutshell. Snaps from 45m out, playing on from frees and snapping chances on the run when you could go back for the set shot (McCarthy gave it to Lyons when he did that). Neale is probably the biggest one, reckon he's far from an unselfish player, people have said that he needs to kick goals to be taken seriously as the best mid in the game and he's trying hard. 10.10 this year, screw what the best option for the team is.

They are a bunch of individuals IMO, not the team that the Tiges are.

It's the "Spurs mentality" talked about in Konrad Marshall's books, that Geelong had as well back in 2007-2011. Always try and bring in a teammate in a better position, even if you screw it up.

Who could have they have picked? WHodge has retired. What happened to Birchall?

Surprised me too.

Burchall brings the age up. Others are:

- Stef Martin - good player, fair enough
- McStay- solid player, their best KPF
- Marcus Adams - dud
- Ryan Lester - dud, can't believe he's still on the list
- Daniel Rich - fat dud that can kick it a long way

Not much to come in compared to us

Yeah, I think there’s pales against ours.

There is much to what you are saying that I agree with, especially the overall team ethic. But as much as I relished that victory last night to put the Lions back in their cage and licking their wounds, I was expecting a much tougher game. However, have rarely seen a team kick for goal as ineptly as that. There was some really poor misses and the anxiety went through the whole team. But have a look at some of WCE and Saints recent performances. Don't expect every side to have a shocking night in front of goals like that.

We also stuffed up plenty of opportunities to score more heavily. At the risk of seeming a grouch, I wasn't satisfied with it. Sure, a strong win and we always controlled that game after their starting 2 goals. But I'm thinking of when we play the best opposition. Not sure who that is yet; maybe WCE or Geelong who are advantaged by this shortened Qs format IMO. The Port match will be interesting although I think we can handle them, but they have more rest days and so we may be fatigued. I believe they are a more skilful side than BL if allowed to run into space and have the current best CM player in Dixon who is huge.

But we wasted opportunities to put the Skunks away and also lost to the Aints and GWS where we did same.
So, my key response to your view on our team-approach to scoring. Yes it must not be selfish. But there is a balance with responsibilty too i.e. when you are in the best position to goal, you take the kick and convert it. The whole team has worked hard to win the ball and get it into scoring range; don't let them down by stuffing up. Simple rule: if a team-mate is in a definitely better position, well-clear of defenders, get it to him.

Pleased, and relieved, to see Shai do so to JR8 for a certain goal as you referred to because Shai sometimes just goes himself when he shouldn't or won't handpass when he should - there was a case early last night running i50 - and some of his kicks i50 were a waste/clangers.
But looking to always find a guy open in the goal square or running alone 20m out is just not on. Instead we have guys like George and Higgins, even Jack last night, looking to pass off short to someone in no better a position than themselves instead of taking the responsibility to goal. It resulted in duffed kicks and rebounds usually.

I think Pickett is confused as his natural instinct is to kick the goal as he is a top kick who can make 50m but rather than go for it like he has done naturally all his career probably, for our GP he believes he must pass it off, so sends it to a pack near the GS. Every time you do this it reverts to another 50/50 ball again, or worse, because defenders often outnumber. It results in an easy rebound or spoil over the goal-line. Wasted opportunity - points rarely win games; goals worth so much more, can seal a win.

This will be a liability in a close game or a final against a classier, more ruthless opponent rather than merely cocky teams like BL. Watch Butler play, or see replay against us. He and Hind know what their job is and are deadly taking their chances. Aarts has the balance right for us. We always kick plenty of points anyway. Whereas Papley, although brilliant at making scoring chances, is a selfish player who will try to do it all himself. Most guys can make 45m comfortably or close.

There has to be a balance - don't destroy a goal-scoring chance once inside 50 if there is nothing free and available in a better position. It's also a team-thing to take the responsibilty and kick straight. I want to see us blow teams away far more as we could/should have. (% is important too)
It might also preserve the heart conditions of their loyal supporters.

Why does it always happen to us?
We win by 242 points, they still find votes for opppstion.
Against Collingwood They didn't score for 3 hours but still got 2 players in the top 3.
Adams and Howe.
We lose by a point and we never get votes.

Sorry so called experts.
Neale wasn't in the top 2 on the ground let alone in the top5.

Having a day off from the world today so haven’t heard any updates.

I take it she’s talking about shutting the borders to NSW completely again?

Lets hope that doesn’t eventuate.

If the unfathomable happens and you are lost to us @eZyT we will double our efforts and decibels in your absence.

But I’m sure your spirit will live on at Metricon and the Gabba.

Most probably the Aussie Nash too.
