Game Day Tigers V Giants

You are right this isn't like last year! Lockdowns, variable fixtures, and so on. Had we kicked straight we would have won.Given that we had many missing playing against last year's grand finalist and STILL nearly beat them is pretty good IMO. The rest of this season will see sides lose when expected to win and vice versa more than any previous year. The team with the most resilience will end up lifting the cup in 2020.
If your auntie had balls she’d be your uncle. Missed shots at goal is no excuse. Most of them were absolute sodas. As well as Bolton played he missed two gimmes on his own. It goes to our skill level and execution; that part of our game is well off where it needs to be. Forward line is horrible and coaches can’t work out how to beat the flood.

The effort and endeavour is back and we can turn it around but we now have no room for error against teams in the top half of the ladder on the run home.

First up bogey side on Wednesday. Thankfully it’s not at Chernobyl.

What about beating Port in Adelaide with our 4 best players missing? A victory for the ages. Followed up by a strong win against Sydney at Chernobyl. A really good win against Freo in Perth when we were again undermanned and lost Nank and Ross during the game. We have not played anything like that this year. Yeah the losses against North and Dogs were bad but we always struggle against those teams at Chernobyl. Against the Cats we had no one on the park.

The one positive is that at least our endeavour is there now. The first 3 games back after the break we were completely disinterested; especially against Hawthorn. Now it’s just our connection, skill level and decision making that is missing. All 3 are diabolical. My God the forward line is excruciating to watch.

The season is by no means gone but we do have to play most of the top teams still and a few on their home grounds. We have only beaten bottom 8 teams. We should be 6-2 right now and sitting pretty. The draw against Scumwood and loss last night are both games we should have won and have left us very vulnerable.
Yep, loved the Port win. Free also but they were/are a rabble.

Agree about Freo but the fact is we played well away from home with an undermanned team that lost 2 more players during the game. I don’t think we have played really well in any game this year. Against North maybe but that is mid week Terang form.

Time is running out for us to hit our straps.

Wasted opportunity to strengthen our top 4 spot.
Games should have been over at half time.

Ideally you're introducing your developing players a couple at a time. It's too many to compete against the better sides unless they're an exceptional group. I actually thought we were OK last night for where this team is at. Just got beaten by better, more solid oppo.

Worse to come maybe, we have the top three sides on the ladder to come in next 3 weeks, (Bulldogs, Brisbane, Port Adelaide), with the only experience coming back in that period will be Cotch, DTLD's setback won't see him available for these games.

I think we will find ourselves outside the 8 with 5 to play.

Hardwick's first 58 teams to Round 19, 2012 all had under 80 games of experience, down to as low as 44 games in early 2010.

Essentially we've been cast back eight years in development by the injuries. Apart from the miracle at Port last year, we haven't been able to beat senior teams.
Yeah, the morning after and I think when we,re missing 1/3 of your best side ( Nank, Prestia, Cotch, Caddy, Astbury, Edwards, Houli ) and replaced by largely inexperienced guys in Aarts, Naish, Chol, EggSmith, Soldo then losing by 2 goals against a good side isn’t the end but having said that Dimma and co need to come up with better combat against this awful crappy style of footy that is 2020.

In some ways maybe a good thing. We have been strangled against teams that have been scared of us with the flooding of the backline. I don't think any of the next 3 will do it,. they will back themselves in to beat us. Might lead to our forward line being a bit more open.

Yes but we still need a method for scoring when the flood occurs. To me there are 4 options:
1. move the ball quickly before the flood can get there (but this isn't always possible with the contested nature of the game today and stupid shorter quarters ), so
2. hold the ball up at half forward (where we should have numbers if the opposition has flooded back) and lower the eyes and spot a target who overlaps into the 50 or
3. get the ball into the hands of Balta, Short or Dusty who can kick a goal from outside 50. or
4. Last resort - kick the ball to the top of the 10m square and have our small forwards (in numbers) pounce on it when it hits the ground.
But definitely none of this stupid kicking to a 3 on 1 contest where the ball hits the ground and the opposition runs it out with ease.

The endeavour is better and that is a good sign, so one aspect is on the way to being sorted.

The ball movement into the forward 50 is just not working. What happened to just getting the ball forward and doing it quickly? What happened to our small forwards being able to read the play coming at them so they were in the right spot (or, more to the point, what happened to our small forwards, where the f*** are they)? When the ball is in our forward 50 where is the pressure to keep it in and the crumbing goals? Where are the leading forwards?

This is our issue at the moment - delivery into the forward 50 is well below where it needs to be and the forward line is not functioning as it should.

What has changed is this.

1 Sides now "allow" us to win the ball in our back half by flooding behind the centre line. It means we win the ball but cannot move it quickly or randomly as we did the last 3 years as we are now outnumbered. Hence we are forced to stop and look for options. This doubles down on the problem.
2 By the time we go inside 50 which we can do with the access we are allowed behind centre, the forward line is crowded and we have to bomb. Impossible to mark and on the ground we are now out numbered. So smalls ineffective.
3 Opposition now retains possession till forward of centre to prevent our turnover tactics with kick and mark. Once close to 50 they are happy to take a chance .
The problem for us is negotiating midfield quickly by hand and run to get inside 50 before the opposition can fold back.
Without hard run and players like Sheds Prestia and Cotch we will struggle.
So lots of forward 50 entries but to no effect.
It is the midfield transition that is the problem.

So we just got beat without our 3 best mids, our full back (if dave plays grimes keeps green to 1 goal), our no.1 ruck our best running back and an enforcer wing? At giants stadium. After dominating play and inside 50's. Dimma would be the much more satisfied coach I would have thought. We would be flag favourites I would havethought

This is true although we did have the majority of the above players when we lost to Hawks and Saints so I hope the issues aren't bigger than just missing players.

Against hawks and saints we were sleep walking. We've got some of our mojo back but we are down on some class.

We were comatose against the Hawks.

That loss looks even more grim considering how they are going or not going.

I'm still of the belief the group could be feeling the loss of Rance and Bobble from around the club they were two of the most popular clubmen and provided a lot of levity around the place.

That said we were lethargic, slow reactive and nigh on disinterested against the Hawks and Saints.

The shutdown switched us off and we struggled to switch back on, some still seemingly haven't found their mojo.

Figgies flood is now the tactic de jouer against the Tigers for the remainder of 2020.

Yes we dominated the game but couldn’t kick goals. We missed some very easy goals and should have won. But our forward line system is a disaster zone. We won’t beat too many decent sides until we fix that.

I hope so. I'm not convinced. Other than North I don't think we've really had our mojo at all. I guess next 3 matches against teams above us will give us a good indication of how we're travelling. Our lack of scoring power is a big concern, we're only 13th for score per game.
