I didn't see much of the game today but I did listen to half it.

It seems some of our key play makers went through some gears today after not having great starts to the year.

Shai, Tiger King and Dion all seem to have had big games today which is heartening for the next month to come.

If these 3 can lift and maintain and join Tim and Hopper then the Tigers will improve their lot and hopefully gain some momentum as the season is on the line after last weeks pissspoor effort.

Bolton, Taranto, Hopper, Dusty, and Prestia were our best.

Rioli and Baker were very good too.

Broad, Pickett, Vlustuin, and Ross battled hard.

Special mention to Samson Ryan had a good game and his tap outs to advantage were noticeable by the Tiger faithful.

So I've got next to no clue about ruck craft- but the commentary today was very critical of how predictable Ryan's ruckwork was.
I think he has potential, but a ruck like Gawn would dance rings around him now I think.
1. Predictable to our mids. We took it away in the middle, and there were great scoring opportunities from his tapouts in the forward 30.
2. He stood up pretty well against Gawn and Grundy in his first game as first ruck just two weeks ago. Strength is still a bit away but he's getting there quickly.

He needs a lot of coaching regarding his tapwork, but he is still very raw and virtually every ruckman coming in to the league does. So no issue with that. I felt that while the commentary today was quite critical of his tapwork, the fact they were talking about it so much means they think there is a fair bit of potential there.

His tapwork at the moment reminds me of Matthew Clarke in his heyday at the Lions. Clarke when he was going well was elite at getting his hand first to the ball, but very one dimensional in terms of tapping it to advantage.

I can remember a game we played against the Lions, early in Robert Walls' coaching career with us :)help) where Walls, based on his knwoledge of coahing Brisbane previously, instructed our ruckman to stay on the left side of Clarke at all times and for our midfield to feast on the hitouts on the other side of the ruck contest. It worked a treat and we won easily. Clarke won a heap of hitouts, but we just sharked it all day long.

He was rubbish. No intensity, no effort, nothing. He was rightfully subbed and won't be playing next week. You imply cannot reward that effort. You can accept mediocre output when you are busting your gut, but not when there is little effort behind it.

Its very disappointing as I was expecting being dropped initially to be a kick up the arse but it seems not.
TBF he took a knock to his right leg early in the game. Seemed to be in a lot of pain at the time and hampered by it afterwards.

Our mids hopefully take a lot of confidence from today's game albeit it against a very poor WC.

Far bigger test next week..

You know, I have a sneaking suspicion that next week we are going to turn our season on its head.

Just a feeling. I agree with Dimma, we are doing a lot right, and because of this we keep showing glimpses of what we can do.

For a bloke who watches a lot of junior footy your blindness to his attributes is Greg Beck like.
Far out, I've seen some low blows, but surely that's one step away from calling someone here Kane Cornes. Ouch.
What next, calling him Phantom?

Lucky to get that game in yesterday without it bucketing down with rain. Been pissing down since about 6pm last night. Only just stopped this morning. For now.

Edit: raining again.

Thought Prestia’s post-game comment about how it took a while for the mids to gel in 2017 was instructive.

Perhaps we’re seeing something similar with Taranto and Hopper, with the curve starting to trend up?

A very hard game to watch.
Our ladder position is a true indication of our effort and skill level.
I cannot remember 2016 well enough to remember if we were this flat during that season.

Yes we were very flat and very putrid.

He needs a lot of coaching regarding his tapwork,

Samson is a young ruckman so of course he needs coaching but commentators being critical I will take with a grain of salt, have a look at his two forward stoppage palms to Shai, both resulting in snaps on goal for 1.1, the second Samson had his fist in the air before Shai had even got it to his boot knowing he had executed a set play perfectly.

It wasn't really criticism. They said Sampson was dominating the ruck, but needed to mix it up a bit because WC were roving to him.

I agree Gawn would beat him, but I reckon he'd compete well. His development this year has been fantastic to watch. I'm a big fan and had a what I thought was a lot of faith, but he's exceeding my expectations.

Agree. I'm even more glad he personally liked getting Taz and Hop in the team.

When nank is fit who do we want as the main ruck? Nank has to be the worst at hit outs to advantage. He can be by himself and tap it straight to the opposition mid.

With that said once it hits the ground he is ferocious and does a great job dropping back in defence.
