Free agency

Out : Frawley
In : 2 of Petracca, McCartin, Brayshaw, Wright

Doesn't matter who they draft, they'll find a way to stuff the poor kids development. Roosy the Messiah has done nothing to disprove that for mine.

Have on good authority they like Brayshaw a lot, but are keen to trade pick 2.

You know its *smile* when Melbourne got 2 x 1st round picks for Scully.

Now they get pick 3 for Frawley.

I see a pattern here...

Can anyone explain how Frawley goes for pick 3 but Ablett and Buddy don't?

My understanding is if using the AFL formula it is calculated as a first round comp pick it is directly after the teams first round pick i.e. 3 for the Dees as they finished third last and 19 for the Hawks as they finished 1st last year.

FFS Its :crazy Dogs lose Higgins to Roos get compo pick 26
Dogs didnt win many games their first pick is 6 going by AFL logic if you call it that should have got compo pick 7 for Higgins

No. It is based on a formula. Not saying it is right but it isn't as simple as you put it. Based on draft pick the player was originally taken at, length of contract at the new club, $$, etc.

Not blaming anyone apart from the AFL this compo pick 3 for Frawley stinks
AFL No priority pick for MFC but we will get you an early pick through free agency :pullhair

Yep. Patch-up Poosy's just re-filling the spots. Goodwin's getting stooged big time.

Got to remember the AFL is paying for Roo's to coach Melbourne.
Can't let their investment go sour.

It's a disgrace.....and I wait for the outcry when Melb go past a few clubs in the next year or 2. Frawley for pick 3 give me a $%$#% break!!

I always liked the NBA draft where the bottom teams finishing 9th (LOL) can still get the 1st pick....but still open to rigging.... takes away teams from tanking.

The issue I have is there has been a window where teams like us have missed out on due to the AFL and them GWS and GCS all the top draft picks and now stupid compensation for players leaving.

I just posted this on another thread, but probably should have been here instead:

I go back and forth on the compensation for losing players to free agency.

On one hand, maybe it should just be a case of too bad, too sad. But, when I think about it, if we were to lose Rance in 2 years time and receive nothing, I would find that disappointing.

If there is to be compensation, it can't be linked to ladder position. I wouldn't have an issue with Melbourne getting a pick at the end of the first round, which would be pick 19 for Frawley. But pick 3 is massive overs.

It shouldn't be that hard to work out which players are worth a first, second or third round pick. Don't the AFL have an independent arbitrator in the ranks for dealing with trade deals that hit a dead end - maybe he could make a call on what a player is worth.

There has been no incentive for Melbourne to try and keep him, in fact, they were probably pushing him out the door. Knowing he was going, they also had little desire to win games late in the year, which again brings tanking into the equation. Why get pick 6 and 7 when you can have 3 and 4.

Exactly... +1

Just posted this in another forum too:

Roos complains that free agency is the greatest threat to competition equalisation that could be devised. Then his club accepts pick 3 in the ND as compensation for losing Frawley to the Hawks. Would he hand back the pick so that all other clubs are not disadvantaged at the ND because his club lost a player? One guess only.

Pick 3 is ludicrous for Frawley. I'm not against a club receiving compensation as a result of a free agent loss - it just has to be commensurate with the quality of the player. Second round pick would have been generous in this instance. Come to think of it - I don't think the first round of the ND should be messed with under any circumstances.

Simplest of all solutions free agency is exactly that FREE. No compensation no bonus no extra nothing. You lose a player you instantly have extra cap space go steal some other bastards player, or better yet. Manage your club properly in the first place, so that your players are happy being there and get an honest chance at playing finals.

NRL doesn't have any major issues with players swapping clubs and there's a reasonable rotation of finals chances for all but a couple of extremely poorly run clubs.

Your argument has merit.
