Footy Show

Re. the so called Ben Cousins "story". Muckraker Barrett had to rely on the old technique of repeating the story a few times over to get any mileage from it. Of course he won't clarify where the information came from. The studio audience laughed at it and the guest panel looked downright embarrassed when asked to comment. AFL journalists really have become a breed of lowlife snitches, ambulance chasers and rubbish bin crawlers.

gave me a laugh - even brayshaw pointed out its the only sleeping pill pilots can take because its so mild

massive scoop Barrett :rofl

I heard Polo was given Flintstone vitamins too
It was Flinstones' Chewable Morphine!

Just got home and caught the comment along the lines of "after Damien Barrett's earlier story on Ben Cousins". I thought, "Oh no! What now?"

Checked, the Hyphen and Age websites ... nothing. Thought to myself, "PRE will have it covered". Got here, read the story, in disbelief!

On what planet is "Cousins gave McGuane a prescription sleeping tablet" news?

Well done, Barrett. Yet another nail in the coffin of Australian journalism!

What are these so called journalist's going to do when cousins retires?

barrett, Hutchy, robbo TRASH journo's!

I'm extremely surprised by the reaction here in response to the Cousins story.
I'm astonished Cousins gave a sleeping tablet to McGuane and perplexed it was accepted by Luke.
Why on earth would he need a sleeping tablet? Medical reasons after the game? Simple answer, call the club doctor.
But I guess, since most of the players are in awe of the Ben Cousins presence around the club, why would you follow the correct protocol when you're hanging out with a role model like Ben?
There is another interesting point surrounding the senior leadership of the RFC.
How does the club now respond to the media claim?
Dont think for a minute the seriousness of this issue is diluted by the fact, a sleeping tablet was only involved.
Benny Gale, Gary March, where are you?

Despite his odd lazy column, it is unfair to group Robbo with Barrett and Hutchy.

Robbo at least employed as a newspaper journalist.

The other two are only journalists in the sense that a gossip columnist can be considered a journalist. They are ambulance chasing, fact-embellishing, sensationalising muckrakers, at best.

Nick Stevens wants to play AFL again.

Ahh, so this would be after Carlton applied for a salary cap exemption for delisting Nick while under contract because supposedly he would never play football again. Good to see ethical business practice is alive and well in Carlton.

I agree, sort of.

I am surprised Luke took the tablet, but obviously it is one that is allowed under the AFL. Jon Brown said that a lot of players find it difficult to sleep after night games. What are the players going to do after this weekends game is anyones guess...

The club has dealt with the matter already. Case would have been closed.

It would be good to figure out how these things get out, but one could suspect that when there are as many players and player sponsors (individuals and companies) involved with a club, someone tells something to a person that probably shouldn't know and it gets out. Unless the club is willing to only have paid employees talking to the club/plauyers and can fire anyone leeking info, these things will make news. A lot of people involved with footy clubs like to think they are more important because they know this or that, but the best thing for the club is to not blab when they find these things out.

Such Is Life .... ;D

Tamazapan although prescribed generally for sleeplessness it is not just a sleeping tablet.. its a benzodiazapine used to also treat anxiety and can be highly addictive.

This is a popular recreational drug.

So is coffee. ::) ::)

I'm with Skills here.

Unfortunately it's the fact that Cousins handed Luke the pill is what makes this concerning. Cousins really should keep his nose completely clean and handing a prescription pill, no matter what it is, to a younger player is a very very silly move on his behalf.

But if I was Cousins, I'd also be very very pissed that this has somehow got out. What would most likely have been an innocent gesture from him (Luke probably all fired up after dealing with Connors, seeing punches thrown between team mates, needed to get some sleep before recovery) has now turned into a massive media event.
