Footy Show

I only watched the first 30 secs.

About 28 more seconds than I lasted. As soon as I heard the backing music (or was someone playing guitar in the room?) it was back to the cricket.

I have no issue with such speeches, and no issue with Robbo - who comes across as being an emotional kinda guy. However IMHO, the presence of cameras makes it feel contrived, and if emotional retirement speeches are personal, perhaps they are best kept behind closed doors.

I was moved but could have done without the heart pulling music that 9 added.

:hihi

I think it's the only 5 minutes of the footy show i have found interesting/entertaining all year so I'll forgive em that one.

For me, the fact he is going into the draft next year does make it a tad overcooked. He's leaving the club, not the game, so I'm not sure what all the talk about missing footy was about.

The speech was more fitting for a retirement

I think it's more about a) the uncertainty of if he gets to go on (he has to have a club take him after all) and the realisation it has come to an end at the club he has been his whole career and playing with his teammates.

He spoke later of understanding the need for evolution in the club and the need for him and whelan/wheatley etc to make room for young bucks to keep the list turning over.

It's a ruthless game footy, gotta love it.

What did people think of Robertson's parting speech to his teammates on the footy show last night?

Made me sick. Overblown, overwrought, melodramatic nonsense. Wouldn't have been out of place as a subplot on Days of our Lives.

its not last game of the season, and he's jumping to go to another club (he hopes).

I could understand these sentiments if he had been shown the door, but this is his call so I don't get the melodrama

I believed the club showed him the door?

possibly, but the player still wants to kick on. Did Tiv have a big cry like this on the Footy Show (even though he knew his chances of getting a new gig were minimal)?

If they chair RR off the field in round 22...... :-X

Robertson is a selfish, showboating player. If he gets picked up by any other team (which I am pretty sure he won't), then surely Joel Bowden could go around again. I also don't think that the bloke has ever said a sincere word in his career.

Agree. If anyone saw RR STANDING around for the Casey Scorpions a couple of weeks ago, with his bottom lip hanging down, and his 'I'm better than this' attitude pasted all over his non efforts, taking the spot of a young player desperate to have a crack, these words will only ring of self aggrandisement.

Must say he showed very poor form that day, was disgraceful behaviour.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Robo was recruited thanks to the footy show - All most Football Legends. Took a big spec x 2, Melbourne thought he had something watched a few games and then drafted him end of year.
I didn't see the footyshow so apologise if it was mentioned.

I wonder if they'll interview Hardwick tonight?

Interesting questions could be asked about the North coaching selection process that could make it uncomfortable for Brayshaw.

There's also an interesting question that could be asked about indigenous players. There was a rumour that this was a sticking point on the Essendon job for Hardwick:

Given the Tigers ties to the new Australian Institute for Indigenous Learning and Skills Development, and the work they've been doing in the NT, it'd be interesting to know how this issue was handled (if it was an issue at all). Then again, it is far too serious a question for the Footy show. Let's leave it at making Brayshaw uncomfortable!

That's right.

Melbourne were looking for bargain basement deals because they were flat broke and went out on left field picks, Cam Schwab saw him on the footy show, had a couple of look/chats and next thing he was signed. Same time as...can't think of his name (?)think he was their full back, retired few years ago. He was a hockey player and had barely played aussie rules.

Was wondering the same thing, I would have thought so, surely?

I never read the indigenous thing with him as racist more than a different philosophy of being uncompromising and insisting team rules are the same for everyone. However it's a good point you make as there is a lot of speculation still as to wether it is true or urban myth, or something in between.

It would be a great question. Ever think of a change of job? :hihi

Agree that I never thought it racist. However I think that increasingly teams recognise that we need to be flexible with how we treat everyone. I.e., what works for A might not work for B.

I was worried that it reflected an attitude of inflexibility in Hardwick, however yesterday's press conference went a long way to allaying those fears, with his talk of always learning.

I hope he doesn't go on it. Pointless IMO and nothing good can come out of it.

One of the reasons I've never paid it much attention is he has played at Port Adelaide and Essendon, two of the most prominent clubs for having indigenous players. I think he would have a pretty good understanding of the pro's and con's of the topic. I'd find it hard to believe Hardwick doesn't recognise the differences in culture and the effects that could have on a player, especially a young developing one.

So long as nothing silly is said, the exposure is good for the club. Because once the finals start, there won't be much talk about the Tigers.
