Dylan Grimes JDM

the general of the backline. was watching him organise the troops back there the entire match. quick, strong and agile enough to cover smalls mediums and talls, great hands in the air and below the knees, urgent, evasive, smart and a massively underrated kick (keeps them low and accurate). if the hammies stay fit he'll become bruce doull / mathew scarlet like.

Agree with all of this and it was the same again today.
He's slotted back into the team beautifully and we now have some good variation and balance in our backline with the likes of Chaplain, Morris, Rance and Grimes. Just hope those hammys are right and he should be in for a long career with us.
One little query I do have is whether he has a tendency to wait too long at times and then play the backwards or sideways switch rather than try to make the quicker option and go more more directly downfield.
The fact is he's a very accurate kick when he does direct a pass.
Has anyone noticed this or am I misreading the situation?

he is still learning but there was a good example tody of what he is trying to do when he waits.

there were zero options ahead and where Rance would have kicked down the line to a 50/50, Grimes waited, a Richmond player broke from his opponent and we were off and ended up with a shot on goal. he just needs to get the balance right which will come. He's a smart and composed man which is very valuable down back.

Played great today. If I had one criticism however it would be that I think he should take the game on more when in possession, he's a beautiful kick, but wastes that by kicking backwards a lot or not even bothering to try and hit a target up the field. Could be a direction from the coaching staff though I guess.

I'd say almost certainly under instruction. Young backs need to learn the basics first - kill the contest, dispose of the ball safely, etc - before they can start to take contested marks and taking bouncing runs down the wing. I know this has been a huge focus for Leppitsch in building our backline.

Yeah that's fair enough then I guess. I spose we'd rather him play it safe than get a bit over-zealous. Do really rate his kicking though, and would like to see him given license to pinpoint targets up the field a bit more.

Very minor gripe though, couldn't be happier with how he and the backline are tracking.

Looks two months off fitness to me. Missed a lot of footy but a bloke of his class is too valuable even this underdone to waste in the Magoos.

Very glamourous footballer just beginning to find touch.

I reckon he has the balance right. I love the fact that he doesn't blaze away to a contest, and that he knows when the game needs slowing down.

Was thinkin about the Cloke debacle an how James Clement use to always take the oppositions best fwd no matter the size, yep Dylans a lot lighter but has the same defensive qulaitys

Would have done a much better job. Unlike Rance he is a smart footballer who knows how to read the play and the ball in flight. Wouldn't have got sucked into unwinnable one on one contests like Rance did.

Still would have tried Chaplin first but Grimes would have been next up. Rance always gets killed by big forwards. Not Dimma's finest moment.
