Truly don't think we can carry both of Grimes and Batchelor in defence. One needs to be moved on next year.
Agree with that except Grimes is quicker but Batchelor is a better mark. Perhaps Grimes can take Morris' spot and has more potential to get better.

On that basis, I'd keep Grimes in team and even at club ahead of Batchelor. Biggest liability in backline is Chaplain IMO - poor mobility and can't play on power forwards as he was recruited to do.

This is starting to remind me of the WillyT thread. Within 20 games we had the new AA lynchpin of our back line. After a couple of below average performances we're looking to trade or delist him.

Can keep both Grimey and Batch in the side if Chaplin goes out. Batch can play his role, with greater hardness. Grimey to swing between mediums and smalls as needed. I didn't think he was that bad yesterday, other than exhaustion at chasing Hoskin-Elliott around.

Batch has him at the moment then.

Check out the two 6 inch long half an inch wide wide on the backs of his legs...very very high up.

They are the zips they put in for quick hammy service in future!

Credit is due for the artful dodger I reckon. Topped our tackle count friday night. Has plenty of niggle too.

A useful member of the back 6.

Agree, gol. Played a very good defensive game. Love the mongrel that's come out of him recently too.

We have some pretty articulate educated sh!t slingers now.

Is the dodger a man of letters TTT? Hopefully he calls Tex Walker a succubus

Both Batchelor and Grimes are playing nasty ATM. It would be under instruction from the head coach too I reckon.

It's easy to forget that Dimma was one nasty mofo.

Hardwick made the very early switch of Grimes onto Chapman instead of Morris.
Thought Chappy had a pretty effective night overall. Dylan tried hard as usual but it was just an ok game.
I worry about his offensive game as a third tall defender. He's closer to Will Thursfield than Malceski right now.
Needs to be more than just a stopper.

I was wondering about this. If Grimes, Batchelor and Morris are all offering no offensive work, why is that we are have no problem transitioning the ball out of the back half at the moment?

From what I have seen Grimes and Batchelor in particular are pushing up really aggressively to try and limit opposition run through the midfield.
Our mids are then woking back really hard to assist the defenders and are then with Houli providing the offensive run. Both Rance and Chaplin are also quite doing quite well offensively, so the fact that Grimes and Batchelor aren't getting the ball much isn't the issue it is being made out to be.

It seems both are focussing more on their defensive work as well as providing a physical presence down back.

Reckon Grimes has it over Astbury now, as 3rd defensive tall.

Grimes has the pace and adaptability to cope with varying opposition forward set-ups.
Astbury becomes merely another 3rd slow tall defender, behind Chaplin & Rance.

Reckon Astbury will need to wait, not only to recover from injury, but also until either Chaplin & Rance make room for him.

Did you see Astbury at all this year Phanto? He played full back ,took the oppositions best forward most weeks while Rance was out an pretty much didn't have his colors lowered, for memory he lead some stat of one on ones, Browny kicked 4 on him in his 250 an other then that didn't have many kicked on him while we were losing games....he ain't a slow 3rd tall defender.....a lot of media were also saying he was the most improved player

Yes, Astbury played some good games at FB, but having 3 tall key defenders made our back line far too slow.

Hope Astbury recovers fully.
But, I still reckon that we can't afford to play Rance, Chaplin and Astbury all in the same back half together.
Oppositions will run them off their feet, as they did in the first half of the season.
Grimes is the faster, more adaptable, third tall defender.

Astbury's time may come, but either Chaplin or Rance will have to make room for him.
My guess and hope is that Chaplin will be on the verge of retirement as a player and will be our key defensive development coach, when Astbury comes back.

Rance is one of the best key defenders in the comp so he won't be going anywhere an Chappy has 2 years to go on his contract, think you'll find Astbury will play FB,Rance will get the gun forward, Grimes will get dangerous mid an Chappy will zone off on the least dangerous tall, we definatly need class an speed coming out of there as well

Agree, you can get away with one guy like Astbury as long as he can handle the deep marking options.
We have Rance who can run all day - if we got a 3rd guy who has height and can run and find and use the ball....look out.

You're seeing things. Apart from when Chapman went into the middle, Morris was on him pretty much all night.
