Draft/Trade Strategy 2023

We really need to improve our draft position, going to have to put up some premiership heroes.

Vlastuin has been an absolute star and would have the most trade value, whilst it is early days, Trezise showed on debut that he has the potential to be a long term replacement.
McIntosh has been a great role player, Banks might be the player who could take his place.
If Graham still wants to go back to SA the Crows might have a look at him, Hopper to take his place. I don't think there's room for the two of them in the side, we need pace.

The three draft picks that we get for them could be bundled up to get us a nice first round pick.

The best way to get quality kids in this offseason is trading premiership untouchables for round 1 / 2 draft picks. I believe we should but we wont. We have a glut of half back flankers both with established players and young ones coming through.

This is the way forward, we need to bundle and package until we've got at least one A grader on the books, whatever that position may be. The key forward might be tricky this year but hopefully a guy like Todd Marshall becomes available down the track.

Agree in general. Based on what we saw this year our kids are not all that great. We urgently need an injection of quality youth that we can build our next premiership team around.

As others have said, I’d be looking to offload some experienced talent to try and get back into the draft. We need to be careful though, no point drafting kids and then just throwing them to the wolves. We still need some experienced bodies to do the heavy lifting while the kids gain experience.

Blair and Livingston need to eRn there keep now. I got reservations of the club is brave enough to put premiership players on the trade table.

Imagine having some premiership hero’s to use as collateral
I would hazard a guess what our success was built on love for the fellow man we won’t be using that collateral.

How about we hang onto our great premiership players and simply draft as best we can (including using the rookie list) and see who comes up in free agency. Can’t see the point trading quality players like Vlastuin etc unless they want to leave.

I reckon with Banks, we’ve found a winger, Coulthard looks like a quick small forward and Tresize looks like he could play anywhere. This rebuild could actually happen pretty quick.

To play devils advocate, Brando, Towner and Buts were premiership heroes and were moved on.
There's a chance that we can pick up solid AFL players with the late draft picks we have, and with rookie selections. The chances are a lot better of getting a good player with a low first round selection.
Trading out some players to improve our draft position for the up coming draft, and then hit the free agency the year after when Dusty's back ended contract is finished is the way I hope the club plays things.

Understand we need more picks to get draft picks in to bounce quickly.

Here is the thing:

The talk of Dusty
Nick
KMac
Soldo
Pickett
Get Shorty
Balta etc etc

We can’t be the ones actively shopping them around.

If a club or clubs came knocking and sort a player from the above list, it would be hard to see them go.

The only way anything happens if the players , people have mentioned above, rumours of Dusty came to the club and requested ‘a trade’.

I don’t know the contract status of any of the players mentioned.

If all are contracted, we hold the leverage.

Honesty & good faith as we have done for many years.

But I love all those players. Premiership heroes.

You stump up or P155 off.

There is only a couple I would entertain if they wanted to leave. Only if they went to the club!

Some of those players are worth more than just ‘fish & chips” !

And I love my fish & chips. *

Waiting’s view

we are only one to two players off. we should with all our picks, draft talls (back and forwards) and centre mid fielders as we do have sufficient stock around the ground. I'm against shopping our premiership players. This sends the wrong message to the players, team and supporters. We as a club have worked so hard gaining respect for each other and that has won us the flags. Willingness to do the team thing.

Look at hawthorn, "the suppose family club", all that has gone out the window.

2 players and a refinement of skills and game plan.

The Hawks actively pushed Hodge and Mitchell out, then I think Lewis might have initiated his move. I would hope we dont treat anyone like the Hawks did the 1st 2.

But I reckon a good outcome for us would be Nick and Prestia being happy to move on and us getting good picks in return.- top 20type picks. We would be a weaker side without those 2 in 2024 and probably 2025, but both are replaceable within our structures.

Hawks pushed out those players so they could bring in the likes of Patton, Scully, O’Meara and Wingard. I would hope that if we let any one go it would be for draft picks and only draft picks.

We haven't sold our soul like some other clubs with our treatment of our premiership players. The players that left were traded to a club of their choice and I see no need

to alter this practice. The club could put feelers out to other clubs and find out who is in demand and what they will offer, then ask the player if they are happy to go

elsewhere for more pay or more gametime. This may net us a pick or two and the players leave with our blessing.

Ok, things becoming clearer now the Doggies have offered up two firsts for pick 4.

If Dusty wants out then I'd be pushing for pick 10, you could potentially add Prestia & Vlastuin to the package and even throw up our second rounder if it gives GC some extra points. This should be reasonably close to Watson who would be my recommendation in that range.

For the key forward, get on the blower to Todd Marshall's manager and see if he's keen, I reckon that's the best bet for a key forward.

For pace and gut running I'd look at Jordan from the Dees, he won't cost the earth.

Gresham I think is damaged goods, I think his medical history needs close examination.

Depends who gets traded ultimately to get us back into the first round - although our first round picks have been hit & miss over time. Maybe see if we can trade the 2024 first rounder for a first rounder this year to accelerate the rebuild process.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing re trades etc, but letting Dan Butler go looks like a big mistake now, especially given our struggles in the small forward area.

Ellis wasn’t a major issue given Gold Coast were offering far more than we would pay, plus we had Pickett to step into his position. Can’t remember why Townsend left - looking for more game time probably after Lynch arrived.

Think Lewis got wiff that they were shopping him to Melb or Melb were keen.

He wasn’t going to play for the Hawks again and he went to Melbourne..
