There were sliders, 123, the likes of Worrell and Robertson - but we chose to ignore them and take this youngster. If I'm right and the club sees glimpses of a really special player for us i.e. Shane Edwards, in Dow, then I can understand their selection. As myself and others posted, he's only just turned 18 and suffered an injury-impeded year. He could have huge upside with our development program from here. May still sprout a bit taller and we will build him up through our VFL program.I haven’t been following this draft at all, so all I know is that the draft preview video on the RFC website shows us saying again and again that we’re confident someone will slide through to our pick.
That prediction did not happen.
Nevertheless, we might’ve still picked up a good kid who could develop into a quality player.
Dow is the first old style FJ reach for Clarke unlike the last two years where we picked the obvious slider in Higgins and RCD. It will be interesting to bookmark him against Robertson.
A reach in the eyes of whom? Twomey? These mainstream draft experts barely watch any footage outside of the TAC and AFL Championship.Dow is the first old style FJ reach for Clarke unlike the last two years where we picked the obvious slider in Higgins and RCD. With Shane Edwards in the room, was he there due to his interest in list management, or was he on hand to do the jumper presentation to someone we were intending to take, before someone cut our lunch!?

My guess the latter. We clearly tried to trade our pick down. Hartley was on two calls at once with a minute left to pick.
I also reckon SOS the deal maker tried to get de Koning but the Cats cut their lunch too. They reached even more that we did with Philp.
Surely we just took him to p!ss off Carlton, secure in the knowledge that we’ll clean up with our later and rookie draft picks.
The club stated that they actually had Dow a lot higher than 21 on the draft order list. Not sure why but they've obviously seen something they liked. Maybe a reason we didn't really bother trying to improve our pick order (not that it would have been easy anyway).
Wasn't 'alot' higher, plus, we were doing our best to trade our pick but didn't have enough time to do it.
Bollocks. What makes u so sure we weren't on the phone to clubs who were offering us deals to take pick 21 and when Dow was available we said thanks but no thanks

It was hard to read their body language. Blair threw his texta down after getting off the phone in what I interpreted as disgust but others were smiling and nodding with affirmation which gave me the impression they were happy with the results of the call.
Benny certainly looked pleased but he may have been day dreaming of Katie Sheehan’s undies in our latest Premiership Cup.
There body language was first relief and then joy. Hartley threw the pen down because their was no need to consider the trade offers being discussed when SOS did another Stocker and left Dow on the board.

Afl.com - our 1st pick was very much on the table up to and during the draft according to Twomey & co unless they were talking shyte
