Draft picks 2019

Can't see any of Robertson, Gould, Bianco, Worrell slipping to our next lot of picks

I haven’t been following this draft at all, so all I know is that the draft preview video on the RFC website shows us saying again and again that we’re confident someone will slide through to our pick.

That prediction did not happen.

Nevertheless, we might’ve still picked up a good kid who could develop into a quality player.
There were sliders, 123, the likes of Worrell and Robertson - but we chose to ignore them and take this youngster. If I'm right and the club sees glimpses of a really special player for us i.e. Shane Edwards, in Dow, then I can understand their selection. As myself and others posted, he's only just turned 18 and suffered an injury-impeded year. He could have huge upside with our development program from here. May still sprout a bit taller and we will build him up through our VFL program.
It's what he can start becoming in about 3 years from now that the club is looking at.

Dow is the first old style FJ reach for Clarke unlike the last two years where we picked the obvious slider in Higgins and RCD. It will be interesting to bookmark him against Robertson.

Dow is not a reach. Plenty of clubs rated him very highly.

Conca and JON were genuine reaches in the 1st round, however, they are the only ones in the last 20 years.

The likes of Lennon and C Ellis just failed to develop as expected and hoped. They were drafted where expected though

With Shane Edwards in the room, was he there due to his interest in list management, or was he on hand to do the jumper presentation to someone we were intending to take, before someone cut our lunch!?

A reach in the eyes of whom? Twomey? These mainstream draft experts barely watch any footage outside of the TAC and AFL Championship.

My guess the latter. We clearly tried to trade our pick down. Hartley was on two calls at once with a minute left to pick.

I also reckon SOS the deal maker tried to get de Koning but the Cats cut their lunch too. They reached even more that we did with Philp.

The club stated that they actually had Dow a lot higher than 21 on the draft order list. Not sure why but they've obviously seen something they liked. Maybe a reason we didn't really bother trying to improve our pick order (not that it would have been easy anyway).

Yeah, I agree. ... in the end we can speculate all we like and no one will ever tell the real story.
I'll be getting behind Thommo and hopefully the kid relishes the opportunity he's been afforded, coming to a great club at such a great time!

Surely we just took him to p!ss off Carlton, secure in the knowledge that we’ll clean up with our later and rookie draft picks.

It’s the Grimes brothers all over again.

Wasn't 'alot' higher, plus, we were doing our best to trade our pick but didn't have enough time to do it.

Reckon we were confident he'd still be there in the second round and tried to trade the pick to better our overall position.

Bollocks. What makes u so sure we weren't on the phone to clubs who were offering us deals to take pick 21 and when Dow was available we said thanks but no thanks

Afl.com - our 1st pick was very much on the table up to and during the draft according to Twomey & co unless they were talking shyte

It was hard to read their body language. Blair threw his texta down after getting off the phone in what I interpreted as disgust but others were smiling and nodding with affirmation which gave me the impression they were happy with the results of the call.
Benny certainly looked pleased but he may have been day dreaming of Katie Sheehan’s undies in our latest Premiership Cup.

We have a system now that allows us to develop good players into better ones so I am confident that Dow will do OK.

Remember over the last couple of years our gems have come later in the draft so interested to see what we get from tonight tbh.

As for SOS, why all this love for getting potential mid range players over top end talent. He seems to pat himself on the back for turning 1 great pick into three risky picks all towards the end of the first round. It was like when he got all those discarded GWS players for one pick and I don’t think any have been any good.

You can build a team around a core small group of elite talent but it’s very hard to build success around middle of the road players.

There body language was first relief and then joy. Hartley threw the pen down because their was no need to consider the trade offers being discussed when SOS did another Stocker and left Dow on the board.

If Dow was taken by SOS then it seems likely we would have traded 21

It's one of our playbook picks. A player that looked real good but injury prevented them from really showing what they have in the juniors. It's 4th on the list after Rioli surname, Captain of their team and Good Bloke

Just saying what I read in the paper today and they reported that they had him marked a lot higher. I haven't read anywhere that we were trying to trade our pick but didn't have enough time. Where'd you hear this out of interest? Really the only clubs we could have swapped with would have been Adelaide (now picks 24 and 25) which would have been unlikely for the sake of 3 spots or with North (28, 29, 32). Not sure we really needed an extra pick though.

Yeah but was that to push down the draft order or to move up it with say a 2nd round pick or next year's first? That doesn't conclude that when it was coming time to pick that we were still hell bent on trading down the order. It's all speculation unless the club confirms it and I haven't seen a reference to it from the club that this was the case.
