Draft picks 2019

We had 45 last year (38+7), and Pickett made 46. Not sure of the mechanism that allowed Pickett onto the rookie list when Grigg retired. Maybe Grigg was excluded and one of the rookies was temporarily elevated to replace Grigg and keep the minimum 38 on the main list?

I read an article at the time that Grigg's retirement actually made no difference in adding Pickett but it seems no one really wanted to ruin the romance so the mis-truth became the truth.

Townsend and Weller are out from the rookies. I think that leaves us scope to add another rookie to Stack, Baker, Pickett, Chol, Eggmolesse-Smith & Aarts (?).
Stack and Baker have re-signed for 2 years. Surely they've been promoted to the senior list; as they rightly should be.

So confusing:confused:

Yeah, confusing. Thought I read separately that Stack and Pickett were staying on the rookie list. Not sure about Baker.

They're all still listed as rookies on the club website. Thought the ND was when rookies got upgraded, but that might've changed.

Yeah I don't know either mate. I'm not sure why players like Stack and Baker would agree to stay on the rookie list, on a comparatively rubbish contract, when they are bona fide, or close to, best 22 players in the best team in the AFL.

Pretty sure Pickett is still on rookie list. No issues with that given he has only played one game; albeit that one game was a ripper in the Grand Final!

My understanding: Grigg had to retire to create a list spot either temporarily or permanently. Basically he was delisted mid-year via retirement. I believe if we'd declared Grigg out for the rest of the year through injury (Basically long term injury list) we'd have been able to select another player anyway. (Not everyone delisted a player did they?)

The spot was then filled by Pickett until October 2019. We were then entitled to re-enable Grigg (if injured) and release Pickett or keep Pickett if we created a list space for him. We essentially did it mid year instead of end of year.

We had a full list so to be able to make a pick at the mid season draft we needed someone to be on the long term injury list ie Rance or someone had to leave the list mid season.

Rance was still in his quest to get back in 2019 so Grigg took one for the team.

Then Townsend and Weller go off the rookie list for 2020 and Pickett takes one spot. We should still have one spot left

Really like all our picks. I don't know how they compare to the standard this year but they all have AFL quality traits.

Dow's agility and hands a Foley Edwards hybrid. Martyn looks a great user by foot and good decision maker. Cumberland is your Scully Maxfield hybrid. Ralphsmith looks class. Why did he slip to 46 and Biggie could be anything (or not).

Also we really needed some mids as we'd been hollowed out with Miles, LLoyd, Menadue, Ellis et al leaving last two seasons. Together with last years lot lets hope we get some Cotchin/Martin approximations if not replacements.

We got graded a C by Matt Doerre.

Scumwood A

That's cool. Let the hype machine start early pumping up the tires of the Pies, Bombers, Blues etc

Fair enough assessment. Hindsight will obviously tell us more but i thought for a highlight package Martyn and Ralphsmith's looked pretty underwhelming. The good news is we can back our team in these days with a fair amount of confidence.

No guarantees when it comes to drafting but at the very least we picked kids that look like they play “Richmond” football.

We are going to need to find replacement mids for Cotchin and Martin sooner rather than later.

Chokingwood - grade A?? Sounds like another choker fan...

We won't be getting any pick 2's or 3's anytime soon, though we did pick up another Martyn lol.

Our picks were risky but players who look to have a higher ceiling of potential than that of what may have been available at our picks.

All of our picks are tackling players who seem hard at it, Richmond types, be it project types such as Biggie or nuts and bolts players like Martyn.

If 2 of those work out I still feel we have done well in the grand scheme of things and where our list is currently at.

Would be interesting to see the avg age of team lists now as they stand.

agree.

I wonder if the fact we're a destination club, and players tend to move more easily these days, allows us to take riskier picks. If we see a hole in our list coming up soon we can always go the trade/FA/RFA route to fill that with the knowledge we'd appeal to many players

Definitely a factor Baloo, I guess we are in the position where we can take high risk, high reward picks where if they don't work out, it won't affect us as much as it would if we were a bottom 4 team.

Good silver lining if some make it.

Plus, we still have the likes of Stack, Higgins, Aarts, Balta, CCJ, Garthwaite, Ross, Graham, Chol, RCD, Eggs, Naish, Markov all capable of playing at senior level. Not the worst list of players who didn't play the GF.

Oh, plus Graham and Rancey too.

We are in a great spot.
