Demetriou has got to go NOW!!!

The only thing that is a certainty in today's game is that Demtriou will get a substantial payrise each year.

Now that is definitely UP!

In the 100s ::) Long way from being a keyboard warrior to actually getting off the couch.

For all the football is dieing doomsayers who think the sky is falling - crowds are up, membership is up, TV audiences are up, sponsorship is up.

Most of these threads belong in the grumpy old men file where people can complain about all the other things that used to be better back in their day and is rubbish now.

Crowds aren't up.

Nope. I've just arrived home from 15 weeks OS, but I'm certain I have heard that tv ratings this year are well down and are getting walloped by the NRL nationally?

You honestly think an online petition of people that don't like Demetriou's administration would only attract a few 100 signatures?

An online petition would attract 100s of thousands of signatures. An actual protest where people have to front up would attract a couple of 100 people. Online petitions are worth stuff all, it takes 4 seconds and no thought.

People have been whingeing about this same stuff for ever. 1987 and the introduction of the Eagles and the Bears. The Swans moving. Live games on Saturday afternoons. Live games against the gate. Every bloody thing gets a whinge and you know what? The game goes from strength to strength.

Sure some 40+ blokes have a cry in the beer about how everything used to be better when they were young. But they are the same ones who whinge that modern cars are rubbish, that trams are too full, that the sun doesn't shine as often these days, and that wagon wheels used to be twice the size they are now.

Demetriou can have 9 point goals, touchdown celebrations and every club feilding a buffalo in the second half. And if Richmond make the finals there will still be 80k there. And someone on the internet will be whingeing that footy was much better when the sub rule was around, and umpiring was better then, nowdays buffalos are only in it for the money unlike the 2010s when everyone played for the love of the jumper.

Average crowds down because of the new team. Total crowds up. Its a thriving comp. Of course if you want to pretend that money and sport is a new corruption and forget Geoff Raines going to Collingwood, or Richmond abandoning Punt Rd for the MCG or the 'loyalty' we showed to Hafey then go ahead.

Thriving comp? Increase in population may have helped increase attendances (include the wishy-washy bandwagoners and those who just go to a footy game for the sake of just going out)

There's more complaints nowadays about the league than ever before.

Rules are more confusing than before including the sensitivity in umpires nowadays.........don't touch me or I'll report you!

Match Review Panel follow ridiculous assessments.

Actually I meant turn-out to sign the petition. I agree you'd get bugger-all attending a protest in person.

I doubt that 500k people disagreeing with him in itself would affect vlad much, if at all. However, a petition would embarrass him a tad in his little stoushes with the NRL. It just might also give the clubs a bit more heart in standing-up to the AFL, although with it's control of the purse strings (not to mention the fixture) this will probably never amount to much more than a whimper.

The AFL has certainly set itself up in a powerful position.

So? They still pay, they still watch the TV. You rusted-on-suporter $20 is worth just as much as a theatre-goers $20. And neither of you really matters compared to $1b TV deals and sponsorship deals in the hundreds of thousands.

Increase in popularity has led to a 24-hour media cycle, fan forums and heaps more chatter. It is pretty easy to post on a forum, or ring talkback. Loud doesn't mean in the majority.

Not really. People whinge about the officials in every sport on the planet. They whinge if cricket DOES have video umpires, they whinge if they don't. Our game is a 360 degree game that is full to the brim of grey areas. The umpiring will always be complained about.

People whinged about the advantage rule being rubbish and umpires not knowing how to use it. Demanded that it changed because players know. They changed it. They whinged about the new method.

People whinged that the old tribunal was inconsistant. They wanted something predictable based on set-penalties and grades just like the NRL. They got it with the MRP. They continued whingeing.

Well, whinge happens when the base is constantly changed in a subjective way. What is the whole purpose of changing game rules when there's no need to?

We all know our game is a 360 as you said, but there should be basic consistency and clarification from umpire interpretations along with match review decisions.

Please don't tell me that insider trading/corruption/ favouritism doesn't exist in sports.

i think people need to take a chill pill, although i dont like Vlad and dont agree on most things he does i do firmly believe the AFL is committed to making it the AFL, yes folks the AFL is not the VFL anymore so forget about what is good for VIC and think about what is good for Aust...
getting a team in the GC was a good move and so is GWS, making them competitive and strong from the start is also a good move....

VIC has had an NFL team in Melb for years, yes Bris and Syd have been around but GWS is important for the AFL, getting a foothold in Western Sydney for the future.

Protect the new clubs from the start and make them strong, the eagles and crows both had a leg up and neither of them have dominated the comp for years, they learnt the hard way with the bears and must make GCS and GWS work early on to keep the fans.

If you truly love AFL and want a true national competition then take of the blindfold and look past whats best now for VIC and whats best for the AFL.

As far as 9 point goals.....blah he said its in the future sometime, so what

It would depend on who the organiser was. It would have to be someone a little bit credible, with a promise that it would have some effect. People wouldn't go to waste their time.

A Hawthorn-supporting mate knocked back two free tickets to last week's game with "I'm over the AFL". There's no doubt that a groundswell of discontent exists.

And when Manchester United supporters found this same sense of frustration and being "over EPL" they founded their own club http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F.C._United_of_Manchester. Back then their anger made threads like this look like a game of hide and seek at a slow-kids kingergarten.

They now get crowds of 1400 and I am sure they feel very righteous and pure and close to the true essence of sport. But Manchester United have gone from strength to strength in their abscence, won championships, sit top of the ladder and don't even notice the fans that left.

None of these "true football" types ever find their way to the terraces at North Port or Spotswood despite their claims for a love for authentic footy as it was in the old days.

That's just it, there's only one Richmond and no alternative.

Like all greedy businesses the AFL is increasing profit by diluting the quality of the product, and it's a product they don't rightly own. You're right, the only thing that will make the powers-that-be stop and think is a hit to the bottom line.
