Swans hit out over Garlett snub
Swan Districts football manager Phil Smart has described AFL clubs as hypocritical and says the system has let Dayle Garlett down after the gifted youngster was overlooked by all 18 clubs in yesterday's pre-season and rookie drafts.
Garlett had trained with Essendon following his snub in the national draft last month in the hope he would win the one remaining spot on their list, but the Bombers opted instead to select Gipps-land midfielder Will Hams.
Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro conceded Garlett's off-field issues were a factor in the Bombers' decision.
"I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a consideration," Dodoro told afl.com.au
"Dayle's a good young man; he just needs to get some direction in his life obviously."
Garlett was axed from the AIS AFL Academy last summer and missed WAFL games this season for disciplinary reasons.
Smart said Garlett was disappointed at his second snub in as many weeks but would look to throw his name up again in 2013.
The teenager was weighing up a possible move to the VFL.
"He has to put his head down and work hard and if he does the right thing he will get his opportunity," Smart said. "He has to show the AFL clubs, and in particular the recruiters, that he warrants a position on one of their lists."
Smart admitted the 18-year-old had made mistakes but hit out at the system that has seen him fall through the cracks.
"I am absolutely surprised (he wasn't picked up)," Smart said.
"Everybody has to make their own decision on it but still nobody's been able to come up to me and tell me what Dayle has really done wrong. If we all had to be squeaky clean there would be a lot of players not playing AFL football.
"Unfortunately, the AFL clubs are a bit hypocritical on their stance, letting some of their players get away with what they do, and then making such a judgmental decision on a young indigenous boy is appalling."
Smart took aim at the AFL's most senior indigenous official, Jason Mifsud, saying he had not once contacted Swans during his tenure of more than two years at the club.
"He (Mifsud) is employed to look after indigenous football and we would have more indigenous players than any State league club in the country outside the Northern Territory," Smart said.
"We have had a couple of issues with a couple of boys who were in the AIS and we have had no contact from Mifsud.
"We have had contact from Kevin Sheehan, who has been very helpful,
but Mifsud is in charge of indigenous development and we have not had one phone call from him."
Four WA players were selected in yesterday's rookie draft, taking the total number of WA players added to AFL lists in 2012 to 24.
"I think it emphasises the depth of the WA pathway," WAFC State Academy manager Raff Guadagnino said.
As expected, former Crow Kurt Tippett got to his preferred home of Sydney via the pre-season draft. The Western Bulldogs chose Sydney superstar Adam Goodes' brother Brett, which left former Essendon and Geelong player Brent Prismall without a club.
