Re: Cricket

The best way to stay in this side is to get on well with the skipper and that's why Martyn gets in and to a lesser extent Langer & Hayden. There is no room for new blood in this side because they've been together for too long amd it shows as soon as one gets dropped they come in regardless of form see Brad Hodge you make 200 and get dumped for a cricketer averaging 18 at Shield level - go figure. Get rid of Buchanan or things will never change they'll all go and play for England cause they're sick of waiting here, when they can walk into any fairly selected team in the world. No merit selection in Australia just friendly selection.

Re: Cricket

Can't see England retaining the ashes. I reckon a 5 - 0 whitewash is more likely.

Also astounded to see Warne and "chronic underperformer" in the same sentence.

have to agree with claw---england will retain ashes

yes

Even Richmond make the finals once every 16 years as well.

Aussies to smash the unwashed and restore normality.

Re: Cricket

yeah, 2 of their most potent weapons aren't there, Jones' unplayable bowling, unplayable by the oldies at least, and Vaugn's captaincy. Vaughan could come back back earlier than expected though

Re: Cricket

I'I go for the Aussies to win back the ashes 2-1.Think the series will be alot closer than most think despite the Pom's setbacks.

Re: Cricket

A couple of snippets that tickled my fancy:

Rodney Hogg in today's HUN on Watson: "Any bloke who does a hammy is an outside chance, but any bloke who sobs when he does it definitely shouldn't play"

And from the Sunday Age a quote attributable to Michael Atherton about what he would do if he won the toss would be to call over Nasser Hussain and ask him what he would do - and then do the opposite.

Re: Cricket

:( I thought Tait would get a go.
Many did ,maybe they didn't think he was 100% fit.

Re: Cricket

Not too fussed Johnston gives the attack variety.

What i am annoyed with is the Golden Child Clarke getting a guernsey when he does not deserve one.

I woulda happiliy given Jaques a crack at no 6 for this test due to his form.

Boony started at 6 so did Ponting.

Jaques is red hot and shouldve played, in fact i'd been happy with Symonds or possible even Cam White getting a guernsy also, but Clarke dont deserve his spot.

Hopefully Pup can make some runs.

With Tait now out of squad my tip for 12th man is Stuart Clark.

I doubt it..Johnson for 12th for mine. They've said many times Lee needs to be used as a shock bowler not a stick bowler as he was in the last Ashes series. If Johnson plays you've got 2 shock bowlers or you use Lee as a stock bowler. Thereofre you need Clark as the stock bowler with McGrath, Warne as well and Lee as a shock bowler.

Don't be silly he's not from QLD,WA or NSW he had no hope. For *smile*'s sake Martyn can average 18 in Shield cricket and replace a bloke who made a double ton in a test match. How else do you explain Brad Williams getting a look in when he left Victoria. There's a cliq in Australian cricket and unfortunately Tassie, Victoria and SA are left out.

You know there is a part of me that almost wishes we get spanked this first test. If Tait is injured well and good, but if he's not it's an appalling decision. You're right; team selection now is all about cliques and incumbency purely in the pursuit of the almighty dollar. Personally I will throw up if a 31-year-old military medium pacer like New South Welshman Stuart Clark gets into the side. Selection nowadays is all about who you know, where you are from and the idiotic principle that players are 'owed' their spots in the side above all other considerations. And that the only time one of the established cronies can be dropped is after an excruciating prolonged period of mediocrity and failure (regardless of the effect this has team performance during this period).

Needless to say picking a team on form and on actual talent (and not what a player was capable of doing sometime long ago in his prime) are alien concepts to Australia's national selectors. The last time Dads Army played the Poms we lost - doesn't seem like they have learnt anything since then.

Re: Cricket

Say Martyn gets out cheaply in both innings yet we still win would his spot be looked at? Of course not as long as the better players cover the weak links it's all good they're not held accountable.

Jacques time will come very shortly as an opener.

I'm a fan of Clarke's despite his "golden boy" tag which is definately unwarranted.
There is no doubt he's a talent but he would not want to fail again against the Poms, as his card might get stamped for some time or permanently.
I hope he does well. 8)

Re: Cricket

Anyone watch the show on the Madras Tied Test - outstanding show and match. Far better than that rubbish ch 9 served up that was on at the same time.
