Re: Cricket

Clark will play ahead of Tait & Johnson. Selectors will play it safe for the first test (or 2).

Have seen some very average bowling debuts at the GABBA, some very short careers have stemed from collecting your first baggy green there!

Its a pity that the WACA pitch no longer plays as it used to, Tait and/or Johnson would be a joy to watch there against the Poms :shakehead :nailbiting

I hope they don't play safe. We have to win this series and be on the front foot from the start.

I'd love to see Tait get a gig.
Lee & Tait to open with a barrage of pace.
McGrath first change, Watson to mix it up a little and Warne to bowl spin.

Clark would be unlucky but I agree with others that he and McGrath are one and the same.
Clark's chance will come soon enough.

Two McGrath's in one side, would that be like having two Chris Judds? Where's the problem with that. ;)

We need to keep the pressure on in the first test, and Johnson and Tait maybe a little loose, whereas Clark will hit the spot more often than not. Lee can also be a little wayward, so I don't like their chances.

I would like to see one of the others get a go, but it aint going to be in this (GABBA) test.

Fair enough, but at 36, I wouldn't put McGrath in Judd's league anymore.

Re: Cricket

was at Adelaide oval today to watch the tour game.

Several things were very obvious:

1. Boof was a class above everyone with the bat
2. borgas is a player to watch
3. Tait is seriously quick (late in the day he was bowling to 6 slips, 2 gullies and a leg slip.

I went around and sat side on to him and he was terrifying.

I put him straight in the first test team, without blinking. He's the real deal.

And Martyn missed the same game with an elbow injury :-\

Oh yes, the thought of no Martyn in the test side, how can I go on living, death where is thy sting!?!?! :rofl

Re: Cricket

once again i will ask why are we making our good young cricketers wait until they are old men before they get a run at test level.
nearly every player who has come into the team has shown they are as good if not better than the old men they replaced who are only hanging on for the dollars.

the acb really needs to get some balls and start forcing a few of the old guys out.

the player im most upset about is tait. any other test team would be falling over themselves to get tait yet we are going to make him wait until his greatest asset is past him his pace.
imo warne has been a chronic underperformer in recent seasons in the sense he is not taking top order wickets. mcgrath has hardly taken a wicket in 2 seasons except on wickets that are doing plenty and his pace has dropped to pedestrian.
bracken is what now 29 30 to old imo and lee has never had a great strike rate but has improved in recent times. tait johnson and clarke are the form bowlers in the country they should play. im sure they could do no worse than the incumbents.

Agree entirely Claw, except the bit about Warne. As a spinner can probably play til he's 40.
His Ashes series last year was exceptional. He's still our most damaging bowler.

What have you been drinking Clawrine?

How many wickets did he take in the last Ashes series in England again?
Unlike the 'pitcher' from Sri Lanka, Warne has taken the majority of his wickets against quality opposition.

Re: Cricket

Craw, I agree 100% on the Tait comment and the making the young players wait call, but that comment on SK Warne suggests that you’ve lost it.  Did you watch the last ashes series?  I can’t remember the exact figures, but I think Warne broke the opening partnership in 4 out of the five tests, it was at least 3.  This was after the pom openers were set, the opening bowlers had bent their backs and failed, and the ball wasn’t even that old.

Reee-diculous statement.  The bigger the pressure cooker, the better he bowls.

Agree totally (except for Clarke, he is no spring chicken and I personally don't rate him). There are so many sports that the most talented of our youngster can opt to play nowadays. If you are say an elite 15 or 16 year old sportsman and you have to make a choice between potentially playing football at the highest level at 18 (hopefully at Richmond ;D) or basically serving an apprenticeship for well over a decade and maybe making a debut for Australia as a 30 year old - which are you going to pick? Or should I put it another way, which kid in their right mind would pick the later?

God only knows the talent we are losing from the shield and ultimately test arena because of the conservative shortsightedness of the national selectors. This can't be good for cricket in the long run.

Plus they also have this warped mentality that it should be harder to be left out of the Australian cricket team than to force your way in. That somehow we have to wait until players lose totally all semblance of their former prowess before they are dropped and that we 'owe' them somehow for long service. And that even if we see clearly a significant downturn coming or worse still a series loss, we have to accept this because of the loyalty that we owe to the incumbents. Frankly if you listen to Pointing, his best man at his wedding Martyn plus Langer and McGrath they are all going to play forever, and age hasn't in the least wearied them (which is code for 'I want to stay on my big fat ACB contract for every last excruciating moment I can). Pathetic.

Personally I would have Tait in the side, along with Jacques, Johnson and also Cosgrove because of his prodigious talent. But again I aint holding my breath.
