Re: Cricket

Aussies are through to the semis with an impressive 6 wicket win over India. All the maligned players (Martyn, Ponting, Watson, McGrath) all played magnificently...Watson got cramp early in his innings, needed a runner, but still made a half-century, Ponting & Martyn both also making stylish half-centuries and McGrath was 1-12 after 6 overs in his normal spot, opening the bowling with Lee (who got slapped round a bit, but came back well at the end).

Time for New Zealand!

Re: Cricket

and hopefully Watson can perform as i would really like to see him in the ashes team for the first test.

Some ashes spots are been consitered now and Martyn, Clarke, Watson, Johnson need big finishes to the tournament.

My ashes team for the first test

1. Matthew Hayden
2. Justin Langer
3. Ricky Ponting
4. Damien Martyn
5. Mike Hussey
6. Shane Watson/Andrew Symonds (Cant split them at the moment)
7. Adam Gilchrist
8. Shane Warne
9. Brett Lee
10. Mitchell Johnson/Nathan Bracken (Cant split them at the moment)
11. Glenn Mcgrath

Also there are some strong starts to the domestic season also with Voges (WA), North (WA) and Hopes (QLD) are having a splendered start to the season. These players wont play in the ashes but North is a player to watch.

BRING ON THE ASHES

Re: Cricket

Good to see Watson go well. If he can cope with his glass back he should really develop into a true allrounder.

I used to be a big Martyn fan for many years, defending him through form slumps etc, but I can never forgive him for his performance in the last Ashes. His technique was the most perfectly suited to the late swing the English bowlers were troubling us with and time and time again he gave his wicket away cheaply when we needed him to step up.

Martyn appears to be answering a few doubters...playing a very swash-buckling innings, from what I'm reading.

Or is it the equivalent of, say, an AFL player only playing well when their side is winning? ;)
Not answering me,I'd have him out of the side in a flash.

Bring back Mickey!!! ;D ;)

Re: Cricket

Aussies vs Kiwis, about to begin. Kiwis bowling first, Shane Bond is playing, Aussies with an unchanged side.

Go Aussies!

Watson gone for noughty nought...

And now Gilchrist gone as well...gawd...2/4...

The sooner Watson is ditched as an opener the better.Get Jaques into the side.Watson is simply not an opener.

Re: Cricket

mb, I agree. I can see why we'd play Watson in who-cares-style games, to see if he has *it* or not...but in finals and important games, we need proven openers, not half-baked guys like Watson.

He did ok in the lead-up games...but, despite what I said, you were right, he didn't show enough.

Watson is more use to us down the order, as a pinch-hitting batsman bowler. If he could out perform Johnson or Bracken, bowling wise, then his spot should be number 7 or 8. Not opening.

Re: Cricket

Aussies end up 9/240 after 50. Pretty dismal effort from all concerned, probably only Ponting and Hussey can hold their heads up.

The pitch did sound like its a fast-bowling one, so it'll be interesting to see what Lee and the rest get from it.

Me too, the way he got back in the side was a disgrace and a testament to the inconsistency, hypocracy and short-sighted of the Australian selectors. With so many retirements impending in the Australian team, it was one recall we could have done without.

Dont agree there.

The pitch was a mite difficult, didn't you see the swing and seam it was producing?
Allan Border thought that anything over 225 would be close to a winning score, and that proved correct.

Won in a canter.

Struggs, I was "watching" via the text on baggygreen... ;) Its just what it sounded like on there...evidently I was mislead...

Vettori will be an absolute champion for New Zealand in years to come. His 27 and has already played 71 tests and 177 ODI's. Averages 33 with the ball and averages 25 with the bat in tests. his claimed 219 wickets in tests and still has at least 5-6 years left in him. Thats at least another 50 tests and thats around 200 wickets. He is a favourite of mine and i enjoy watching him play.

Yep,quality player & getting better.

Re: Cricket

Vettori is a bit like Murali (except Vettori can bat a bit). Gets a lot of wickets as he is by far the best bowler out of an ordinary bunch and hence gets a lot of wickets.
