Cricket

My boys are 13 and 15 and, like most of their mates, have no interest in cricket any more. They liked T20 up until they were about 10, but couldn’t be held by noise and merch giveaways beyond that. I reckon I took them to 7 or 8 games and we never saw a close one. With so much risk required in the batting, there’s just too many collapses to keep both teams in it. Lots of dud games as a result. I think people sell kids short sometimes. You can give them all the noise and colour you like, but beyond the age of about 8 they’re excited by a great contest.
I reckon I’ve taken them to 15 NBL games. There ‘s plenty of noise and colour there, but I can’t remember a single blowout. They still love going to the basketball.

Well done to Warner on making his 100. Well deserved.

So the players should be speaking up about this. Test cricket is on it's knees. The horse has probably bolted though.

Unfortunately, the way it’s going Test cricket may be a novelty in the next 20 or so years. Only played occasionally and probably between the 3 teams you mention. Over the Christmas I’ve spent time with the family, and they all prefer T20. To them Tests are boring. They’re not even particularly passionate about the T20’s. Can’t name players or teams, but it’s entertaining to them.
Evolves into “sports entertainment” (and passing ‘light’ entertainment at that) instead of a genuine sporting contest - a bit like WWF wrestling falls into that category. All about catering to a gold fish brained instagram society.

Did I hear Tim Lane saying this will be compared to Dean Jones in Madras?

*smile* me, there's hyperbole and then there's that. What total crap.
I think Timmy needed to be put out to pasture some years back when he started whinging that Richmond players were not playing "nice" against those poor little Carlton boys.

Several clangers in his commentary today. Earlier said when Warner scored a single that he decided not to try for two to keep the strike. It was the last ball of the over!

PS - I'm back after a very interesting 40 day cruise. So looking forwars to catching up to all the action I've missed on PRE - satellite internet on our ship was very erratic so gave up on PRE for most of the duration.

Great knock by Warner, well supported by Smith. Nortje bowled some serious heat but the rest of them were pretty ordinary aside from Jansen's spell before lunch.

Hot bastard of a day to spend in the field. The Saffers will sleep well tonight.

As usual, the MCC bars were full of blokes who didn't see a ball live. @Mr Brightside was in danger of seeing one on the way to the loo but averted his eyes just in time.

Yep. Kudos to Warner for a double century in the heat.

Guess lots of people have their views on whether Warner is an arse hole or not, but geez he's been a bloody gun opener for Aust for a long time. Massive innings in stinking hot conditions against a quality bowling attack ( who mainly got their processes wrong ) while carrying half a cutlery draw in his back.

Kudos also to Smudge for his supporting role, not often I've seen him struggle so much to get his timing n placement going pretty much all day long.

Yeah heard that, Warners knock wax gutsy and brave but it couldn’t hold a candle to Dean Jones.

Warner the blokes isn’t for me but he’s one of the great openers.

Nah, can't have that.

Averages a mediocre 32 in 44 tests away from home.

Averages 26 in England and 24 in India.

If he can reverse those in 2023 he will get Leysy's (and most) votes. Until then no way. And won't be backing him in to do so.

The "greats" do it outside your country Scooper.

8th most test hundreds by Australia’s post war. Only Hayden as an opener ahead of him. Numbers put him with the greats.

Look deeper. 5 Test hundreds in 85 test innings overseas. 2 of those 5 were gimmies in Bangladesh.

Not one in the past 5 years.

19 in Aus. Home track bully. Evidence undeniable.

Again. To be a great you do it outside your own dunghill. Davey hasn't.

He has the chance in 2023 to change it. That is what he needs to be a great.

Yeh, Robert Craddock has bought into the hyperbole. Have never enjoyed his writings or tv spots much.

Has called Warner the most underrated Aussie cricketer ever.

Yep, he's got a very good average and strike rate. But almost exclusively at home.

Great effort yesterday, but as you suggest he would need to have some remarkable away series to be rated a great of the game.

Summary

Great of the game in Australia
Bog average outside of Australia
Overall above average (not everyone can be a great right!)

The global away average of 1-7 is 34 and 10% lower than at home. Puts into perspective how different it is for Warner. Must be a massive mental thing and or adaptability for him. He is basically the same as that average.
