Cricket

We just need, Leysy, mate. Then you can run up the white flag.

You called?

Ok, Leysy's take: If talking purely keeping, leysy played cricket with an outstanding keeper (district first's for St Kilda and Prahran) who was a real student of the art.

He always espoused Berry as the best he has seen. That is good enough for Leysy. However because of his batting he wasn't a better cricketer than those in front of him i.e. Healy and Gilly.

Think you can still judge keeping as an art on it's own. Sorry Mr B.

My brother played with Johnny O'Hare at Dandenong - fantastic keeper and a ripping bloke but a worse batsman than Berry.

Yeah, Berry was a whole different level as a keeper, probably as good as one has ever been. I saw him up close at Rajasthan in 2008 and you could have made a case for him being the best keeper in the comp from his net form and he'd been retired for quite a few years at that stage.

There was a story often told in the Australian Dressing room about him stumping Boon down the legside in a shield game off Paul Reiffel which they reckon had to be seen to be believed. Was one of those ones which would always get brought up again anytime quality keeping or fielding was being discussed.
This stumping can be found on YouTube for those that haven’t seen it. Extraordinary piece of work by Berry. The timing just wasn’t right for him for Test cricket, and being Victorian didn’t help.

Definitely will be sending out less Xmas cards in 2022 .

Just on Gilly , I think he’s the most underrated keeper of all time , I think we get caught up in how great a batsman he was and also the fact he followed arguably the greatest in Healy .

I remember when I used to watch a lot of cricket and if it was edged it was 99% chance it was caught by the keeper, sodas never dropped and Gilly got to plenty no other keeper would have . The real tell tale for me to how good those 2 were when Haddin, Wade etc came along and how often an edge would hit the deck , no doubt Haddin was handy but not anywhere near Gillys class with either gloves or bat, in saying that nobody is.

the record books seem to back up Mr B.

Can't see Berry in this list:

Or even this list:
Gold post

Khawaja is definitely a better batsman than Harris, and can bat anywhere including opening. If Head is right for Hobart it will make for a tough choice. Green would be sent back to Shield cricket if he were only a batsman, but his bowling is easing the load on the main guys so he will get more time. He's clearly an elite long term prospect, just has a bit of a technique issue with his forward defence at the moment. Too good not to sort it out.

A tour of Pakistan next, brings Maxwell into the equation and you could mount the case for Khawaja to open there.

Would Maxwell still be in the selectors thoughts for test cricket ?

Harris out for 27, wonder if he keeps his spot for the next test.
Should have been out first over when he edged Jimmeh for four. He's somehow managed to survive long enough during his last three innings to take the shine off the ball n get the bowlers raising a sweat, but I'm not sure how. Managed to get solidly set in these innings but not only failed to make big runs, he's never looked likely to, he's just hanging around fudging n hoping at 80% of the balls he receives.
