The farcical rules surrounding what is a “catch” raised its head again last night in the BBL when Matt Renshaw took an outfield catch but his running momentum was going to take him over the boundary rope. So he throws the ball up in the air then momentum has taken him outside the boundary rope. So he jumps in the air and pats the ball to a nearby teammate who completes the catch. So even though he and the ball were outside the field of play but because his feet weren’t touching the ground it was a legal catch. Ridiculous.
Just simplify the rule for gods sake. If the catch is completed inside the field of play but momentum takes you outside the field of play it’s a catch!

I agree that the current situation is a farce but I disagree with the solution.
I think that the catcher must stay completely within the rope for the duration, otherwise it's a six.
You wouldn't have been able to even get beyond the boundary in the good old days when it was a fence.
But they will never do it because it would remove all those spectacular catches from the game.

Why is it a six? If the fieldsman catches it 5 metres in from the boundary and keeps running and goes over the rope that’s a 6? The ball hasn’t been hit OVER the boundary.

Only saw the video just now. You can't be positioned outside the boundary when the bowler delivers the ball, so I don't see how grounding your feet outside the boundary and batting the ball back into play can be deemed legitimate. It just feels fundamentally wrong.
Also has the effect of producing more boundaries/faster scoring, however I think it was brought in to reduce injuries from players diving into the fence. As long as the same boundaries apply for both teams, I don't see the definition of the boundary itself as a major issue apart from traditionalism.
