Coronavirus

sorry to hear. but if you want some advice from an experienced campaigner when it comes to cancelling flights during COVID, don’t contact the airline first. Wait for them to contact you. If you contact the airline, they will give you credit. But if they contact you advising you that your flight has been cancelled, they will give you a refund.

Yes, I held off cancelling the flights yesterday although there is a limit as to how long I can wait. At some point I'm just going to have to take my chances. Bit if a game of brinksmanship really.

13 is not too bad a number, let's hope it goes down from here.

I see the AFL is now being asked why the reduced crowds were not spaced out around the venue as opposed to all shoved in the same part of the stand, at least I saw some letters in The Age to that effect.

We'll see how NSW goes a bit later I suppose although I really can't see that their numbers will be going down. Given there seems to have been transmission at the MCG it is time to wonder if the new variant can be transmitted outside.

How many of the hospitalised are fully vaccinated, of those, how many critical, versus unvaccinated?

This is the salient point.

If vaccination means we can live with the virus with very few people getting very sick or dying then that would be the point where we have to live with the virus just as we live with so many other viruses.

There are reports that the virus was definitely transmitted amongst patrons waiting to get into the rugger test outside gate 7 at AAMI Park.

This is why I crack the *smile* at people walking about in the streets without a mask. They think because they're outdoors, walking their dog or whatever, that its ok to not wear one. You walk down the footpath and some *** coming the other way doesn't have one on, then there's an increased risk.

Bit disappointed by that number. Was hoping it'd be under 10 which would be an indication the lockdown extension wouldn't be too long. That said we know at least 4 were in isolation so let's hope the other 9 were too. I guess that's unlikely but the more in isolation the better.

9 were in isolation apparently, from Andrews just now.

7 day extension to lockdown.

Watch the Murdoch media *smile* and whinge about the lockdown extension in Victoria. But meanwhile, remain deathly silent on the unvaccinated state of the nation - the root cause of our problems in dealing with this - due to Slo Mo and Co's gross and deadly incompetence.

So the UK has 70% vaccinated but recorded 48,000 new daily cases. And they're lifting all restrictions. Is this correct?

As we move towards the end of the pandemic, the number of cases becomes irrelevant. We only know of the number of cases because of testing, ie. we don't test this volume of people for flu so we have no idea how many people at any time are carrying the flu. The exit to the pandemic will be when we know of the level of hospitalisation from Covid. We have to remember the main reason for lockdowns and thats to protect the health system from being overloaded in hospitalisations. Vaccines are obviously the main way to reduce the level of hospitalisation from infection, but thats ultimately the end game.

Number of cases in the UK shouldn't be the gauge now as they open up, its going to be a review of hospitalisation capacity. Deaths will largely be an output of this, and as it stands, it probably indicates that even with vaccines, Covid may well kill more people than flu annually, whether this has an affect on reducing flu deaths (the offset impact) we aren't sure, but these should be the measures that the UK (and the US) are now measured, not on pure cases.

Classic tactics on Sky news right now.

NSW press conference starts 10 minutes before SA one, Vic 5 minutes after. As soon as SA starts NSW shunted to the second channel, and then Vic stays on the main one.

Nothing to see in NSW, all the issues are in Victoria.

I saw that as well. I'm not sure if thats just because we are in VIC and there is a different screened news in NSW.

The Sky News correspondents also go so much harder at Dan than they do at Gladys.

7 Days..you need a new source mate.;)

it was 10 days as of Sunday. Listening in today Andrews and Sutton seemed very confident we are on top of this. 9 of 13 cases being in Iso for their infectious period was probably a factor as to why they cut 3 days off it. By next tuesday all cases should be in Iso for their infectious period

South Australia 7 day Lockdown from 6pm tonight

as i said earlier, there should be no footy this weekend.

78 new local cases in NSW, not bad, hopefully a trend down.

38 were not in Iso for their infectious period. their numbers aren't droppng any time soon.

I concede that we will have to find a line in the sand to draw at some point when it comes to COVID. we can't go into lockdown every winter for the rest of our lives. But where is that line? I can tell you that 322,000 cases and 296 deaths over the past week (in the UK) is way, way past that line. Either way, we are not ready to have that conversation any time soon. We will have to vaccinate the whole country first.
no way we can afford to vaccinate the entire country first. Way too paternalistic (and maybe that’s not 100% what you meant) and isn’t achievable. Give everyone a shot for a shot then we need to go.

we have 1000 deaths a year from road accidents and don’t shut down all traffic.

we have 25000 deaths a year from smoking and don’t make that illegal.

somewhere between these two numbers is reasonable and we need to wrap our heads around that. There are NOT infinite resources that support indefinite lockdowns. The purpose now is to avoid what is happening in Indonesia. No government will ever say it but safety standards and rules, rare drug suppprr to save lives etc do put a dollar value on human life. The number isn’t infinity. You can back calculate it but is typically somewhere 3-5 million dollar type range in advanced countries. In poorer countries it is orders of magnitude less. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Value_of_life

We are spending billions per week so math says 200 lives per billion spent. This makes sense in context of an Indonesia situation. Once vaccinated the numbers won’t stack up. Emotionally this may be challenging but you have to wrap your head around there not being Iinfinite resources and there is a need to prioritise where resources go. This is going to be a challenge as the community is now conditioned to managing cases instead of hospital numbers / ICU utilisation etc.

I have dealt with risk assessment and allocating scarce resources - you do make these assessments when prioritising once the law has been meant.

there is a cost in many other areas of government that will be felt to pay for the pandemic. It will be either higher taxes or lower services or both - and for a long time. (And then we will hear all the complaints about that. )

Victoria has finally put a temporary (2 weeks) stop to red zone permit holders travelling to the state. Only compassionate exemptions will be allowed and it sounds they won't just be a rubber stamp.

Quite frankly, about *smile* time. It was insane that hundreds of people were entering Victoria on these permits everyday.

With delta seems like we need to lock down Whole country or this will keep happening. And then per my post above. We need to push vaccination hard can’t have more than half the country shut.
