Coronavirus

The world knew there was a problem, and some governments had taken action to stop the spread.

I think if we're all good and try to stay indoors as much as possible, it's still containable here. But with the supermarket chains cancelling home delivery which many people had planned around, it might not be doable. How many people with flu symptoms are attempting to avoid public places and are now forced to go and join the battle in busy supermarkets, spreading the virus?

Don't know why they couldn't divide their stock into in-store & delivery and when it's empty in one, that's it. They've let the public down AFAIC.

Do you wear a face mask in public, Baloo? Does the government supply them? Or at least recommend them?

No. Not many do. Government has stated you only need to if you have any of the symptoms or if you are medical professional.

Gov gave every household 4 early on but that was more to calm the nerves. And they've said as much.

Anyone else feeling a very different vibe in the community since the bushfires?

It was all about togetherness, looking out for your fellow man ,

Seems so long ago now , yet it wasn’t long at all.

Or maybe I’m reading too much into the supermarket antics

nah, I went to town yesterday to a pretty good vibe.

general acceptance of the vagaries of life,

heaps of good humour, good manners, people helping elderly shop.

certainly a palpable nervousness, but pretty good humanity

my butcher was pretty stunned. he said its 'busier than Christmas Eve'.

be gentle and kind and funny to other humans everyone

actually be as gentle and kind and funny as you can to all species, even the ones you buy from the butcher.

There’s a bit of the 'every man for himself' going on out there..... I get that people are trying to protect their own, but when you see groups descending on supermarkets like a swarm of locusts, you do wonder where this is going to end.

I'm not sure I could cope with some of the sh.it the staff are copping. There's some pretty ordinary human beings out there unfortunately!

How's about a bit of decency and respect by asking how they're going and thanks for being here.
Let's face it, when they pull the pin..... life will not get any easier for the rest of us!

don't forget for every bit of poor behaviour you notice, there's 100 bits of good behaviour going on.

we just don't notice.

we can tune our brain like a radio I reckon - change station to the positive if you can manage it.

mines been stuck there for most of 50 years. A couple of times ive lost reception bigtime, but the broadcast has been mostly crystal clear :p

Maybe the government's strategy is a variant of the UK's - induce it slowly through the population by compelling those who are healthy enough to make occasional visits to the supermarket, catch the virus and develop "herd immunity"? I see no other sane reason for the major supermarket chains, one after the other, shutting down home delivery. They don't want a siege mentality staving it off completely.

I spoke to a neighbour today, when I was out on our last walk before home confinement starting midday tomorrow.
She is a mother to a child that goes to the same creche as my kid.
And she mentioned that someone in her office building had tested positive.
Its important not to let the panic scream out.

What would we do if this was a common cold or flu?
In general we would wash our hands well, and want each sick person to stay at home.
At the shops its avoid talking to the coughing person, and then wash the fruit and vegies well.
Pre coronovirus we were still going to the swimming pool and pub, riding trams and other hotbeds of spread the cold around.
This is similar albeit more infectious. Its not leprosy.

In France the supermarkets remain open and we are going once a week. No swimming pool or pub though.
Once a week is a low risk for infection

France have just introduced total shutdown. Plus 300 billion ouzos into the economy to reduce foreclosures and non-payments etc.
Mortgage cover. Rent and power bills to be deferred.
Its a massive amount of money to reduce the economic impact, so that the focus can be on infection prevention.

Some numbers for perspective - why countries are acting now

Feb 26 ITALY had 374 positive cases
March 2 ITALY had 1689
March 8 ITALY had 5883
March 16 ITALY had 24,747 cases and 1,809 deaths.

March 16 Australia 377 (18 days behind Italy)
March 16 UK 1543 (14 days behind Italy)
March 16 France 5381 ( 8 days behind Italy)
