Coronavirus

Posh maybe being young helps a bit.

In good health,?
Hygience?
Immune systems ?

Really who knows the real truth!

Not the first timeWE have been kept in the dark about issues to do with life/death diseases, so wouldn’t be surprised.

Personally, my views it’s worse than being reported.

My stupid , suspicious mind.

I'm guessing the virus is not a "strong" virus, ie. healthy people with good immune systems will not feel it in most cases. This is backed up by a lot of the anecdotal evidence and whilst good from a mortality rate POV, obviously the impact on the number of infections could be dramatic.

I'm not a doctor / scientist but a numbers man, but this would also support the spikes that we see in cases / deaths, as whilst in the non-vulnerable strong immune system people, when it breaks into more vulnerable parts of society, cases that impact peoples health are likely to spike very quickly hence these small cluster outbreaks that we are seeing.

Now the next phase is whether these remain as small cluster outbreaks or if those outbreaks start increasing exponentially, both in terms of number of outbreak areas, but also in the number that are infected within those areas.

Still all anecdotal.

Some of what Trump has been claiming with the virus is flatly false, but I can't help to agree that the quoted 3.4% is flawed somewhat.

I saw an interview on the project with 2 passengers (they were a couple probably in their mid 20's) that contracted the virus on the Diamond princess. They said they had no symptoms, were tested as a final precaution as they were due to fly back to Australia and then tested positive despite no symptoms. So they were quarantined. The whole time they had the virus they said they had no symptoms, so my thinking, outside of China, maybe the infection rate is MUCH higher but the mortality rate is also much lower. Its anecdotal I know and we wouldn't know for sure unless HUGE proportions of the public were tested, but if you have no symptoms you aren't likely to go and get tested, you know "just in case".

The death rate is not something you agree or disagree with.

There are too many people turning facts into opinion. Like the US president who is advising people based on his hunch. The death rate is what it is. It may end up being lower, or it may end up being higher. Right now it's the amount of people who have been confirmed to die with if, out of the amount of people who have been confirmed to have it.

So Obama creates a service that is needed "after" an outbreak of ebola happens and Trump disbands that service when at the time was not needed because corona virus 2019 was 2 years away and is in the wrong? Obama should have set up the ebola mob prior to the ebola outbreak by this logic.......a pandemic is inevitable blah blah.

WTF. A system is set up to mitigate further pandemics, vs a system to mitigate further ones is removed?

You have to see the failure in logic there?

L2 i was going to go into this myself, in my reply above. What the heck is wromg with these zealots bagging Trump and the states aboit this. China is the originator of this. Not Trump and a group of scientists put together to fight ebola!
Suspicion has actually been placed at the feet of scientists, Chinese ones. True or not at this stage with an open mind one would not discredit the accusation.
China by and large is a plague of people in its own right. They are the ones who should be held accountable.

WTF. You do realise that Chinese people are the same species as Australian people?

How can they be a plague? Humans are spread across this planet, in some places in higher concentrations than others. Infectious diseases will always be an issue, and now due to genuine globalisation, pandemics are inevitable. Scientists have been saying this for years.

Being upset at China is like people in the country getting upset at people on the city for living closer together.

A strong healthcare system gives you some chance at mitigating the damage of a pandemic. But they will always be a feature of a globalised population.

I don't think blame is useful here. Honestly, there's not much anyone could have done here.

I will say, I do wonder whether all the people post new years who still decided to go on their international holidays, then come back could have made a difference by just giving it a few months. Lots of current cases popping up are due to people returning from Iran or Italy. I personally would have said a big no to any airport at any point this year.

But it's unrealistic to say we could have got enough buy in quickly enough to make a difference.

If a big international body has been brave enough to say 'This particular pathogen has a perfect storm of traits to cause a full scale pandemic, so avoid overseas travel' then we might have x slowed it.

But the economic impacts would have been huge. And if it had worked, and the virus hadn't spread, then heads would have rolled for causing panic over nothing.

I agree. What the WHO is doing now is not that relevant to us as a rich country with a strong health system but it’s absolutely not to poor countries that need their resources and expertise.
In the end that’s important to everyone. Building health infrastructure in poor countries is important in the context of a global pandemic and cuts to aid budgets by so many countries (including us) has not helped.
yes, the links between poverty and disease outbreaks are very clear, yet cutting foreign aid is always the easy way out for pollies, and something many advocate for.

So much said about foreign aid is misinformation. Apart from the obvious altruistic part of it much is also in our national interest. For instance we have a poor country with 250 million people to our north in Indonesia and investing in health in that country is very much to our benefit in times like this.

You are obviously not aware of the current Ebola outbreak, it has been ongoing for two years, and before that there was one in 2017, and of course the one I mentioned re Obama which went from 2014 to 2016.
It kills a lot of people.
So there was an outbreak 2014 to 2016 then again in 2017 and the current one has been going for two years which means it started in 2018 through 2019 into the start of 2020. By my count then it's all the same ongoing Ebola outbreak as it's actually been going pretty much non stop into it's seventh season.

Actually chortled when I saw HR's comment about China being a " plague " of people, there's probably nearly enough of them to constitute plague proportions. I've been saying for years n years that humanity is the worst plague this planet has ever seen.
With the world's population having more than tripled in the last hundred years, despite all the different ways humans have found for killing one another. A half decent pandemic or two might be the only way left to keep the population growth under some sort of control.

To date though I have to confess to being rather disappointed in this latest " pandemic " 110,000 cases worldwide n 3,000 deaths should hardly rate a raised eyebrow compared to the *smile* mess we humans happily make of one another every single day.

We all gotta die of something eventually n if it's your turn when *smile* happens, then *smile* happens n the rest of the world just keeps moving right along.

Pretty much, but has been in different countries.

The Swiss have just cancelled all events over 1000 people. There are 15 cases in switzerland.
It is a massive impact- this week is the Basel carnival (fasnacht) which is the biggest show in town - the equivalent of Moomba
Plus the geneva motor show, basel watch fair. Serious impact to the swiss life/economy.
Soccer and hockey matches to be played in closed stadiums.

This was Tuesday and Switzerland now has 214 cases. And we are ploughing ahead with things like Moomba and the Grand Prix as though nothing has changed.

People are going to howl that they weren't warned, with some justification.

A tent set up outside a Brisbane hospital in anticipation of virus cases. This is an example of how well we are (not) prepared to cope.

Don't get sick.

I thought making Julia Morris queen of Moomba was designed to stop people attending, would certainly keep me away.

A doctor in Toorak has been confirmed with coronavirus after contracting it coming back from the USA.
Unfortunately he’s treated 70.. yes 70 patients whilst infected.
The **** just hit the fan.
Prick should be in jail.
He knew there was all this Coroner virus *smile* going on.
He knew he was crook with something cold or flu like.
Didn't *smile* matter to him, all he wanted to do was go back to work n pay off his overseas holiday trip. Now the *smile* has closed the clinic n put his already ill patients plus all his co workers at risk n *smile* up their ability to earn a living.
Gross negligence n he needs old school tar n feathers.

Just a few conclusions being jumped to there TM

Actually just read he got flu symptoms on the plane home so yeah, that's pretty unprofessional.

My 2 cents on the hoarding of supplies including toilet paper..
Can't help but feel many people in this country have really lost their sense of community, especially in the city areas. Less so regionally.
Very fragmented and as a result have become increasingly insular & selfish.
We like to talk about this mythical thing called the 'Aussie Spirit' etc. but it's not what it once was sadly when the community pulled together in times of crisis.
Multiculturalism has many strengths no doubt. It also has a few weaknesses & I think this is one of them. We've become more divided as a nation.
Unfortunately many people that really need strong community support have been heavily affected by this behavioral change.

Also much of the behaviour also has to do with people losing faith in our leaders to protect them.
Trust in leadership is crucial, otherwise organised society can become chaotic pretty quickly when pressure is applied.
Much of that trust in our political leaders has been eroded in recent times unfortunately. So much scepticism in the words of those we need to believe in & follow.

Nine meals from anarchy is the saying. We've seen some of how fragile society is this week..
Interesting times.
