Coronavirus

The sad outcome in this is that so many Americans have no clue because they have a President that keeps them, due to a mixture of ineptitude, arrogance, and ignorance, largely uninformed by pretending that it is not that serious.

Not sure about that Tommy. Whilst what you say about Trump is undoubtedly correct, the American people have plenty of independent news outlets from which to source the real information and state of affairs. Many of those are more than happy to expose Trump for the fool he is.

It's not like China and Russia where, in the main, corrupt governments control the (dis)information coming from media outlets. The poor citizens of those countries have no hope in discerning the real story. They'd be closer to the mark if they took a 180 degree view of everything that is reported.

I don't think there is much to be said of the US's media either given the Russiagate debacle.

1 in 10 COVID19 cases in Oz linked to Ruby Princess...

Here's what the mainstream media aren't reporting, probably because there is an ongoing Police investigation:

...cutting to the guts: "If the chatter across social media is to be believed, it is being said that Liberal MP and Assistant Defence Minister, Alex Hawke, who represents the Hills District in Sydney’s bible belt, had some bizarre part to play in the widening scandal.

It has been alleged the parents of Hawke’s wife Amelia were onboard the Ruby Princess along with some friends from the Hillsong Church. Hawke and his family are proud Pentecostal Christians, much like our Prime Minister, Scott Morrison".

I doubt we will ever get a straight answer as to whether the current Defence Minister was the mystery person who made the telephone call ordering the release of the Ruby Princess passengers.

Reckon Dan got the whole golf thing wrong.
Not at my local club! We found out a member tested positive a few days after he played on the weekend in March. Thought he picked it up the previous week, so his playing partners and all members and staff he came into contact with had to be notified to quarantine themselves in case they were now a carrier. This virus is the most vicious one we've ever seen...most contagious and most dangerous in terms of how quickly symptoms can change for the worse.

And now some questions on long term health of those that contract the virus and need hospitalisation.

If this ends up being the case then the herd immunity option will have caused some long term health issues

Interesting take on the Sweden strategy here, even if it's only CNBC.

Generally most countries see Sweden's strategy as borderline crazy and high risk, but it will be interesting to see this again in a month. Higher death rate now, fewer later?

That they do, however those same media outlets have time and again been touted as fake news by Trump and therefore the vast majority of his supporters will not read them, only the sanitised crap that makes him look good. Its no coincidence that those now protesting against restrictions are generally conservatists who still (based on the videos I've seen) seem to think this is some sort of hoax.

Seems a bit like nonsense to me.

So many assumptions. First, that getting over it once protects you from reinfection (it probably does). Second, that second waves won't see different strains, or any antigenic drift. Third, that population movement (especially internationally) won't expose those sensitive groups again. Fourth, that there are no long term effects of getting the infection for the less sensitive groups.

Also, not sure where they're getting the '60 % of the population being immune is herd immunity' figure. 60% would likely not be enough to insulate the sensitive groups, particularly with a global reservoir of the virus.

A lot of unknowns to be gambling lives on.

That’s ridiculous. Australia has 2.5 times the population of Sweden yet we have around 40% of their infections and around 4% of their deaths. I know which country is doing a better job:rolleyes:

Imagine the unbridled criticism and outrage towards the Australian government if we’d have taken that approach and ended up with those numbers.

But I guess Sweden is held up as the great bastion of a socialist welfare state:rolleyes:

I'm not endorsing it, posted it as an example of a different strategy. I'm sceptical too.

Swedes don't seem to be concerned about this strategy yet, but time wil tell. Norway/Denmark/Finland have similar "socialist policies" but are taking more of the general lockdown approach, so it's nothing to do with "socialism".

Yes I was commenting on the strategy not suggesting you were endorsing it.
