Coronavirus

North West Tassie going into a lockdown due to the cases they have had over the past 48 hours. In theory I thought Tassie would fair best being an island.

The problem is that it got into a hospital complex so it has been spread outside by some staff, patients and (probably) visitors in the early dats. It's pretty low numbers elsewhere here but the testing doesn't look to be as high as interstate.

I wonder if it means if you've had strain C then you're not immune to A, and/or vice versa? Potentially a big problem for the concept of herd immunity.
There is a USA Today article that goes into more specifics. 8 variants but the change is minor, with the widest variation 11 genomes out of 30,000. So the strains are 99.9% the same as each other.
Also it mutates at 10x slower rate than the flu.

So short but uneducated answer is no, not a big problem.

One physician had tried to raise alarms, asking about negative pressure rooms and ventilators. Most staff concluded that he was overreacting. “They thought the media was overhyping it,” the respiratory therapist told me. “In retrospect, he was right to be concerned.”

It's surprising how many people with medical training were downplaying it early on. A mate's mum, who is a retired nurse and an amazing person, wasn't worried about it at all. It's easy to see how politicians might've been caught by surprise when such attitudes were seemingly widespread.

Not so sure. The Central Chinese Govt (the PRC, read the Chinese Communist Party) put off making a public announcement about the virus outbreak in Wuhan as long as it possibly could, which I think occurred at the beginning of January??.
During the previous 2 months and in the months following it appears the PRC hoovered up as much personal protective equipment from around the world, as it could. (Age April 3, page 8).
The PRC announcement had included reference to the numbers infected and the deaths arising, to that point.
Given the history of the growth of virus infections in China, Bird Flue, Sars etc, I think the reaction to that notification from around the world was pretty poor. Tragically from that time some leaders, though not our own Premier and Prime Minister, let down the public very badly.
Some of those leaders President Trump included, continue to do so.

The December 31 announcement by China advised of 44 cases of pneumonia of unknown origin, with 11 severely ill and no deaths. That previous Chinese scares were largely countained hindered preparation for this one.

Reckon Australia fumbled the ball a bit at both levels, initially. There were newspaper articles urging Victorians to get to the MCG for the women's cricket final and "show coronavirus who's boss" - echoes of sentiment about living with terrorism. It was a frightening couple of weeks as things escalated here from mid-March. But we were lucky, we had the Italian example in particular to learn from before it gold hold of us.

It remains an ongoing war with no clear end in sight - low infection numbers over the holiday period should be viewed skeptically. Relax and we could easily be overrun like most other places.

Thanks for the correction L to R.
Not sure that I would agree with your assessment of the SARS virus, circa 2003.
The PRC's reputation for under reporting on health hazards and disaster issues should also have been a factor in how the World greeted the Dec 31 announcement.
An ongoing war is a good way to put it. A like for u.

Agree to be skeptical about numbers over Easter, NSW health minister said on one particular day they only did 700 tests when they usually do 4,000 a day.
We the public continue to be told that the virus doesn't take a holiday so why in the hell does testing  .

I reckon the picture we get in 14 days time will be crucial.

Didn't see too many of these. Do you have a link to these articles attributing that quote Lee?

Apologies, those might've been my words!

Different words, identical theme though.

C’mon Aussie, hit coronavirus for six at women’s T20 World Cup final
A rush of ticket sales on Friday, following Australia’s rain-drenched semi-final victory suggests many fans have overcome their fears about being in a massive crowd.

Scott Morrison urged Australians on Friday to set aside any concerns about the virus and flock to the MCG.

“Unless you’ve got symptoms, there’s no reason not to get out and get behind Australia on Sunday night at the MCG when we take on India,” the Prime Minister told The Weekend Australian.

Josh Frydenberg will be sitting in the outer with his family. “Australians should feel comfortable and confident as they go about their normal lives and enjoy great sporting events like this,’’ the Treasurer said.
Highly inappropriate in hindsight. Thank goodness the penny dropped in time.

Thanks Lee. Sorry not sure of the date because of the Australian paywall but interesting that those quotes came from our Federal leaders given the criticism Andrews has copped by some on here re the WC.
No doubt at that point it was mainly Morrison setting the National agenda re sporting events, large crowds etc. given he wanted to go to the rugby league week later.
Anyways as you say all have gotten away with it pretty lightly it seems.

Those comments were from the weekend of the T20 final, probably Saturday 7/3. There were calls from doctors to close the borders in the week following, and Morrison made his comments about attending the NRL on the Friday. The restrictions began in earnest on Monday 16/3.

12/3 'Close air borders' to prevent COVID-19 spread, experts say
12/3 'Watch it on TV': Doctors tell Victorians to stay away from grand prix

I don't think Morrison wanted to override on the T20 or GP given they were solely Victorian events, but he did pressure the AFL, being a national competition. Like many politicians elsewhere, I think Morrison and Andrews independently reached positions of clarity whereupon their attitudes changed abruptly - Andrews a little sooner after GP team withdrawals forced his hand.

I am optimistic about the infection rates we have recently, but the big issue is that we need to make sure that this doesn't breed false confidence. The lockdown will need to continue for quite a while yet.

Once we see no infections for a while a gradual relaxation is the only way out of this.

As it stands we just don't know enough: does recovery mean immunity, are we missing a lot of infections, are there any drugs which are effective, plus many more questions.

Interesting article by Stephen Duckett who is the leading health economist at the Grattan institute. Duckett is a bit of a polarising figure in health but he is well known and extremely knowledgeable in this space. Ex secretary of the commonwealth Dept of Health also.
He believes we can get the infection rate to zero

Singapore's relative relaxed approach seems to have not worked as well as as expected. Infection rates rising consistently with a new record of 386 last night.

We have a problem here in the foreign worker dorms where it seems to be rampant.
