Coronavirus

Are some countries now a little willing to relax restrictions because they have "flattened the curve" somewhat?

Good article.

Thoughts!

HE pumps up Sweden as the ideal model at the end. Sweden however by the latest reports is in for serious pain.

Exactly.

Concerning is the timeframe until a vaccine can be found.

Up to 24 months.

A lot of countries will encounter serious financial pain , not only by the number of deaths they are enduring.

Only 1 single death recorded in NZ so far. Brilliant leadership by Ardern to get on the front foot early.

So they are 1/5 of the population and have 1/5 of the cases. The only distinct difference is death tally and partially explained by age demographic who have it. Our death tally is low in comparison to all countries. Given the similarities I assume you will praise Scomo as well for his brilliant leadership? And Aust have done it without going to Stage 4 restrictions? If anything we've done it better?

I wonder what the world numbers would look like if we had no social distancing, closures etc?
Case count excluding China (11:15am)

1,521,530 cases
92,380 deaths (6.07%)
48,983 severe (3%)
1,101,182 mild (72%)
278,985 recovered (18%)

I wonder what these numbers would look like if we had no changes to life as we knew it?

I've seen that bouncing around on twitter. Also heard there was no passport / visa check when the Ruby Princess docked. They were allowed to just walk ashore as if they disembarked from a harbour cruise.

BTW, Dutton has been uncharacteristic quiet during this pandemic.
Story goes that some high ranking Hillsong Elders were on board as well as a couple of MPs. Remembering also that the number of Hillsong / Pentecostal senators in Parliament now is around 10? As for Dutton, no great loss not seeing him...

The information I've read:

- Border Force is concerned with checking passports, preventing illegal entry etc. They don't make health assessments.

- Port Authority of NSW contacted Border Force with their concerns. Border Force contacted NSW Health.

- NSW Health spoke to authorities on the ship (the captain?) who provided a favourable report on the health of passengers. Ship said some had been tested for flu but advised that apart from one very ill passenger who required immediate hospital treatment, there were no major issues. Based on this information, NSW Health assessed the passengers as "low risk" and advised Border Force that they would not be sending staff to conduct onboard testing. This was the final box that needed to be ticked, and Border Force was then obliged to instruct Port Authority to allow the ship to dock, and passengers to disembark.

My reading based on the above:

- Border Force followed the book and are off the hook.

- NSW Health may have been negligent in not sending staff to test for the virus. One spokesperson defended his staff last week and said they were "tired after working long hours".

- Medical crew/captain/Carnival Australia may have provided false or misleading information to NSW Health, who made a flawed decision as a result.

One of the latter two is going to carry the can. Perhaps both.

Clearly NSW Health have to take responsibility for this if the following report is true. More medical information was requested on 17th March yet on the 18th they gave it a low risk and let everyone just leave, all 2700 of them. 128 reported ill with 24 having symptoms that clearly could have been COVID-19.

Closer to Sydney, the ship advised the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment that: ‘128 persons had reported as ill in the previous 14 days.

The symptoms declared by the vessel include 24 persons with temperature over 38 degrees Celsius, 6 persons with muscle aches, diarrhoea, severe headaches or vomiting.’

The federal department passed that information on to NSW Health for the next step.

According to Commissioner Outram of Border Force, NSW Health requested more medical information from the ship’s doctors on March 17.

The next morning they were told a few swabs had been taken for flu.

Also, below, why on earth would you ask for swabs to test for COVID-19 but let them leave before the results were returned? Just a total *smile* up.

NSW Health had asked the Ruby Princess to send its 15 samples to the testing laboratory for COVID-19 testing and told the Ruby Princess "you are free to disembark tomorrow", with all passengers required to go into self-isolation for 14 days.

Antivaxxer has the solution. I wonder if these harmonies neutralise 5G frequencies.

Celebrity chef Pete Evans wants Australians to know that all they need to fight the deadly coronavirus is a $15,000 frequency machine that uses “harmonies … found in nature”.
The controversial television cooking show judge, who recently praised the work of notorious anti-vaxxer Robert F Kennedy Jr, spruiked the futuristic-looking machine to his Facebook followers on Thursday night.

In a Facebook live video, Evans said the BioCharger NG, which he sells on his website, is a “pretty amazing tool” which he and his family “use pretty much every day”.

“It’ll take you down some rabbit holes … it’ll take me an hour or two to explain it,” he said.

“Just briefly, it’s programmed with about a thousand different recipes. There’s a couple on there for Wuhan coronavirus that you may be interested in.”

The device is described on Evans’ website as a “hybrid subtle energy revitalisation platform” that uses “four transmitted energies (to) stimulate and invigorate the entire body to optimise and improve potential health, wellness, and athletic performance”.

A video explaining how it works tells users “just sit comfortably in front of the BioCharger and select a frequency recipe from the menu”.

One “non-invasive” session takes just 12 minutes and as many as six people can sit in front of the device at one time, according to Evans’ website.

Brisbane-based dietitian Mandy-Lee Noble shared the video on Twitter last night.

“Pete Evans is selling this ridiculous device for US$15K claiming it has some action against ‘Wuhan coronavirus’,” she wrote, before urging the Therapeutic Goods Administration and NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard to investigate and “shut Evans down”.

Ms Noble told news.com.au Evans was acting irresponsibly.

“Although this device is unlikely to cause direct harm it can cause indirect harm if people believe it will treat or prevent COVID-19 infection,” she said.

She said items like this were “a risk to the community response to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Associate Professor of Medical Science Dr Darren Saunders wrote on Twitter: “Having spent years whipping up baseless fear about WiFi, Pete Evans is now selling a $14,900 hybrid subtle energy revitalisation platform” to pump ‘energies’ into your body.”

Evans in January shared a selfie with Robert F Kennedy Jr, praising his “important work”.

Mr Kennedy, the nephew of US President John F Kennedy, and the son of his fellow politician brother Robert F Kennedy, is one of the most prominent figures in the anti-vaxxer movement in America.

In his social media post, Evans tagged the profile of Children’s Health Defence, an organisation founded by Mr Kennedy that promotes now-universally debunked conspiracies about various vaccinations.

Royal Australian College of General Practitioners president Harry Nespolon said Evans should “stick to talking about ‘activated almonds’ and leave vaccinations alone”.

News.com.au has reached out to Evans for comment.

It's an interesting dilemma, the health of the world or the wealth of the world, I'm not sure there can be a middle ground.

Sweden have gone with a very risky strategy, because per capita they don't have very many critical care beds.

Agree with this. It could be argued that Australia was maybe a bit slow to react but recent results have been outstanding. 9 of last 10 days have seen a reduction in new daily cases and the one anomaly was a minor increase.

Not to take anything away from NZ as they appear to have done a stellar job. But I reckon the task was that much more difficult in Australia given the much larger population and much greater our exposure to China and other countries via the influx of visitors we get. Plus we have managed it with stringent restrictions but not as harsh as those in NZ.

Both countries have handled it very well but it is interesting that Ardern gets so much more praise than Morrison. I reckon the federal and state governments in Australia have done an overall fantastic job after a shaky start.

Sounds like a beauty! I'll have a couple to go with my Brocky Energy Polarizer that I've got on the Horvath nuclear Fairlaine.

Doesn't that Sweden's strategy even worse as part of the flatten the curve is to take pressure of the health system

I think early on there was this impression that SCOMO was dragged kicking and screaming to what had to be done. Maybe it was when he said he was going to watch Cronulla play but to be fair that was a week after Dan procrastinated over the Grand Prix.
We were hesitating when Ardern was decisive in the early days of the pandemic but I think once our leaders worked it out they have done a decent job.
