Coronavirus

How does a city as large as Tokyo manage to contain the virus yet it's exploding everywhere else? Face masks are widely used in Japan yet we are being advised that if not used correctly face masks don't do much to contain the virus. If it's a matter of availability and using them properly then why aren't governments producing more n95 masks and educating the public on how to use them?

The Japanese buy more soap and cleaning products per capita than any other country in the world, by a far margin (Britain one of the lowest btw). Their culture is also one where there is little human to human touching (the much mocked bow greeting). If they have the slightest cold or cough they don a mask so as to not cough or sneeze on anyone. They are fastidious in their cleanliness. I'd say that goes a long way to explaining their current infection numbers.

This goes someway to explaining why death rates seem to be so different in Italy compared to Germany:

If he knows our figures are low, why does he want us to live like this for 6 months or even longer??

This bloke's inhaling the Hitlervirus.

The plan is to buy time to increase health response levels and equipment. Keep the affected cases within our health system to cope. Limit the spread to give time to get to a vaccine

Morrison or anyone doesn't want us to live like this and will look to relax the restrictions when the situation allows it. The main thing here is if everyone does their individual part in this the health emergency will be contained and at the same time the economy can be restarted without prolong pain

But yet again today we see hundreds of selfish *smile* on the northern beaches of Sydney completely ignoring the social distancing directives.

Geez this country is full of selfish and self indulgent arseholes. WTF do these people not get about the current situation

it's a bit like the tragedy of commons I guess. They know the best thing for society is to not go out, but they still act independently in their own self-interest and hit the beaches.

Yes

And we have commentators holding up Korea and Japan etc as examples of what to do. The big difference is that the Asian populations freely accepts their governments imposing harsh controls on them. And they are more disciplined in following the orders.

Doesn't work here

Exactly right. It doesn't work here. All ScoMo has to do is ease not strangle.

IMO Scomo has really come to the party with his recent announcements. The 3rd stimulus, the childcare announcement. He has been impressive in his press conferences. Ironic that there is complete silence on here about his recent performances.

Keep up the good work Scomo.

He's certainly gotten better as this has gone along. Still talks way too much though in his pressers. Andrews is a far better communicator.

It needs to work here or else we will end up like other places in Europe and the USA. Until there is a vaccine social distancing is the only method available to try and contain the virus. People just need to suck it up and stop being selfish arseholes. Do you want to see an Italy, Spain or New York scenario in Australia?

I don't.

a younger dude rang a mate the other day for a surf and when my mate declined the kid says “getting paranoid up in the hills are we”? this sort of attitude is why you stay at home...

I've just been down to the local shops to get some essential items& was amazed at the amount of people (of all ages) that were'nt wearing masks &/or gloves.
I'm just getting over a bout of bronchitis so I wore both gloves & mask, I was surprised at the number of funny looks I got.
In one of the shops I just happened to cough a couple of times, social distancing was then practiced quite strongly by the other customers. :)

I thought we were supposed to get 100,000 cases by today.....

I know what you're saying Riddles, just think 6 months is way too long.

We haven't got 100,000 cases because of the social distancing directives. If we didn't do it we would be in a hell of a worse off position.

Look at what the Yanks did. Ignored it for weeks too long and now they are *smile*.

Wow 600 confirmed sick and 7 dead directly linked to the Ruby Princess. Has the person that made the decision to release those people from the ship been fired?

If it was the fault of the cruiseline, are we as a country going to sue them?

The Yanks are up *smile* creek. You can't nuke a virus. Plus, Jarred Kushner is overseeing the medical response. It'd be laughable if it wasn't so bloody serious.

I didn't have great faith in the Australian community to obey the measures the Gov has put in place. But aside from the odd bad apple it seems most Australians have accepted the seriousness of the situation and have done their bit to help the country out.

Those whinging about the potential duration of social distancing/isolation measures are selfish and petty IMO. We're all in this together.
