Novax's entry to the tournament unvaxxed would have flown in the face of everything the Vic Gov has consistently said.
Seems the political play came from a higher power & heaped the pressure on.
Glad the Vic Gov stood their ground.

Tough break for Djokovic but he’ll be hard to beat in the Manus Island Open.
yes it is worth a debate. Omicron has changed the game in this sense because whilst the research now appears very strong that the risk to serious illness in the vaccinated is significantly less than in the unvaccinated, the first level of defense from infection given by the vaccine is nowhere near as effective against Omicron. ( somebody who understands virology might be able to explain but evidently there is antibody protection and then T-Cell protection, it is the 2nd one that the vaccinated still have very strongly).

It is however too early for a few reasons
1. The research is new, it needs some time
2. We don't know what the full story is with a booster and also potentially a 2nd booster
3. The vaccine manufacturers will be working on a tweak to their vaccine to hopefully improve efficacy against Omicron
4. The possibility of another variant.
However my suspicion is that in a lot of places it doesn't make any difference anyway because few are checking vax certificates.

The question is how did it get to this point? The Vic Gov was told just hours before he arrived..
Reading between the lines it looks to me like he has applied for an exemption to play in the Australian Open on the basis that he has had COVID in the last 6 months. That process has constantly been said to be “blind” and that no documentation would be verified by the panels. So what has happened is that application came through on that basis and it was approved.
What they forgot is that he had to provide proof of COVID in the last 6 months to get into the country if unvaccinated, and he can’t.
This is pure speculation of course but it was rumoured very strongly last night that his exemption was on the basis of having had COVID in the last 6 months.

It may be America (and unverified) but here is what triage and a lot of people chosing not to get vaccinated can do.
