Watch him at centre bounces and stoppages generally. He seems to constantly leave his man alone. He plays on the backline and says to his opponent "I'm the defender you pick me up." Call me old fashioned but..
Clearly you have something against Chris. Did he cut your lunch?
Chris would be one of the first picked every week.

Criticism of Newman is heresy.

A bit like criticism of the Steamee, checkers.

Re: Newman

I've always had a lot of time for Newman. However, I have believed for a few years now that he is one player who needs to take the next step or he could be very goood trade bait. The basis behind my thinking is that he needs to graduate out of the small defender's role and vacate this for a younger player. If he can't step up to another role, then move him on.

Midfield is a obvious move for him and I cannot understand why he has not been used in the centre-square rotation as a run-with player on players of similar height like Sam Mitchell or Nick Dal Santo. He has the defensive attitude and the skills when he has the ball in his hands to hurt loose-checking midfielders.

A less obvious role is the one that Wallace has deployed him in this season. He is currently playing like an old-fashioned wingman, floating from defence to midfield but never pushing too deeply into the forward line. Effectively, he is becoming the linkman that the defence uses on the switch, out int he open spaces, feeding forward of the ball runners like Tivendale who can find space when they run hard. Don't underestimate the value of this sort of combination.

The critical test of whether he can succeed in this role is the number of inside 50s that come from his boot or from the next kick.

I still believe that looking for a trade when he is around 27-8 will be beneficial for the club and probably for the player, IF he is still playing as a small defender. If he can make the transition to a more senior role in the team he will become a very valuable player for the rest of his career.

Having a good senior small defender who reads the play as well as Newman will always be more of an advantage than disadvantage

Played that role VERY effectively last Saturday ToT. On quite a few occasions Newman was the playmaker.
I don't mind Newman on a wing as he is one of the few players on our list who can hit a forward inside 50. Wingmen with good foot skills are worth their weight in gold particularly at Tigerland.
Wallace is utilising that strength and leading guys like Richardson, Hughes, Kingsley & Schulz should reap the benefits of Chris's top shelf delivery.

I think he's been left in defence simply out of necessity, if Matty White comes good and Jake King earns a senior spot then hopefully that will allow us to use Newman in the midfield more often. I don't think I've ever seen him line up at a centre bounce, so he's never really been tried out in the guts.

That is what I am saying. We lost the game when he went off late in the game because supply dried up. He just needs to make this transition a permanent one.

Now if we can free JBowden up to play the same role on the other side of the ground.......

That seems to imply that he is no player is valuable enough when playing as a small defender. If such, I can't agree.

I really like the way in which Newman goes about it. He is one of the underrated players in the league.

Re: Newman

I dont know why people are so critical of Newman!

Let Saturday night tell the tale, but like someone said previously, only a hand full of players are cemented week in week out. Newman is definitely one of them, he is in our top 3 in my opinion.

Newman should stay where he is, because his defensive skills are of great beneit, although when played man on man, his accountability is something that you have to question. In saying that, he isnt a man on man backman, using him on the back flank/wing is ideal for everyone.

Senior players need to be match-winners. Saturday night was the classic example of this. When the game was to be won, Lucas, MacPhee, Fletcher and Lloyd all kicked goals-Hird and McVeigh set a couple of them up.

Scarlett is probably the best defender going around and he troubles the scorers with regularity.

When was the last time Newman kicked a goal?

Don't get me wrong, Newman is a very good player but if he is to be our future captain, then this is area that he must improve in. Of the players, I mentioned McPhee and Fletcher are defenders-but they take calculated risks for the benefit of the team all the time. Newman doesn't, but he needs to. If I'm not mistaken this is just about what Dyer 'Ere is saying also.

FWIW, I see Newman as being a very similar player to Barry Rowlings, who captained the club with distinction for several seasons in the early 1980s and starred in the 1980 GF (along with just about everyone else). Rowlings played on the ball, that's where Newman needs to go.

Against Adelaide last year, but why does that matter?
When was the last time Andrew McLeod kicked a goal?
McLeod generally gets defensive fowards played on him.....Newman doesn't.

Yes, McLeod does have zero goals as well this season, But McLeod's played 260 games for 241 goals to Newman's 89 games and 10 goals.
Very significant imo.

I'm not having a go at Newman i'm just stating the facts. McLeod is one of the rare superstars of comp.
Can't believe people are critical of Newman, I think he has been fantastic this season considering where he came from last season.
Soon Foley, Polak or J.Bowden will be in the gun. ::)

I can just see our opponents half forwards arguing about who gets to play on Newman. Oh no please not me. :-[

I am not saying he shouldn't be picked.Rather that he shouldn't be allowed to run around in defence without a player to pick up.
I'd be extremely surprised if there is another small defender in the AFL who has had more goals kicked on him this season. As I remember it he pretty much cost us the game against Collingwood...
We have probably the worst midfield and ruck set up in the competition. And we have backed that up with a capable player, but one who has no regard whatsoever for his opponents.
Week after week we lose or havn't you noticed.

your constant criticism of newman is unwarranted and growing very boring

Re: Newman

As is your refusal to address the fact that there are problems for us in Newman's approach to the game.

Chris Newman

he has turned into a matchturner for us over the past few weeks with his hard runing and tackling should be a co captain with Richo next year. They need to push him into the midfield more often so he can have a bigger impact.
